How does the Patek Philippe 5224R 24-hour dial work?
Two central hands display two time zones against 24-hour scales. One indicates local time; the skeletonized hand indicates home time. Because each scale covers a full day, the display distinguishes morning from evening without requiring a separate AM/PM indication. Small seconds appear at 6 o’clock.
Patek Philippe positions noon at 12 o’clock, rather than at 6 o’clock—a layout the manufacturer says is intended to make the hours easier to read throughout the day. The 24-hour display is the defining visual difference of this Travel Time Calatrava: it combines the dual-time-zone function with an indication that makes the day-night cycle explicit.
How the Travel Time crown settings work
The three crown positions control winding and time-setting. Patek Philippe’s operating description specifies these functions:

- Crown pushed in: Wind the watch manually.
- Crown pulled to the intermediate position: Adjust local time in one-hour increments in either direction.
- Crown pulled fully out: Set home time, local time and minutes together. The seconds stop while setting.
The separate one-hour local-time adjustment is useful when crossing time zones: it changes the local hour without requiring the wearer to reset the minute hand. Fully pulling the crown is the setting mode for synchronizing both times and the minutes.
Case, dial and movement specifications
The 5224R-001 has an 18K rose-gold case with a sapphire-crystal back. The blue dial combines a circularly striated center with a circular satin-finished hour circle. Applied rose-gold numerals, markers and cabochons have white luminous coating. It is fitted with a navy-blue calfskin strap with a nubuck finish and hand stitching.

Patek Philippe’s press material is dated 27 March 2023 and presents the watch at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023. The manufacturer describes it as a travel watch for everyday use, but that is brand positioning rather than an independent assessment.
