1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe current Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight makes the stronger case if you want a dive watch: it pairs a rotating timing bezel with 200 m water resistance. The current Black Bay 36 is smaller, has a fixed bezel and is rated to 100 m, making it the more restrained everyday option. That is a case for choosing one over the other—not evidence that the 58 outsold or displaced the 36.
What “knocked out” means—and what it does not
The title works as a buyer’s argument: the Black Bay 58 can win over someone considering a Black Bay 36 because it offers a more explicitly dive-oriented package. There is no evidence here that the 58 caused the 36 to be discontinued or outsold it. The comparison also needs a model-year distinction: a 2019 article compared an earlier 36 with the original 58, while the current 36 belongs to a newer 31/36/39/41 mm family and the 58 was updated for 2026.

Where the 58 has a practical edge
The bezel is useful for elapsed time
The 58’s unidirectional rotating bezel lets you mark elapsed time at a glance, which is useful for diving and also for everyday timing. The 36’s fixed bezel does not provide that function. If you never use a timing bezel, however, its presence may matter more to the look than to your routine.

Its rating is more explicitly dive-oriented
TUDOR rates the current 58 to 200 m and the current 36 to 100 m. That difference supports the 58 as the more purpose-built water-use choice, but a rating alone does not establish suitability for every activity or replace following the manufacturer’s use and maintenance guidance.
Why the 36 can still be the better buy
Smaller proportions and a quieter design
At 36 mm, with a fixed bezel and less overtly diver styling, the 36 is the natural choice if you want a smaller watch that can move more easily between casual and dressier settings. The 58 measures 39 mm across and 47.8 mm lug-to-lug; its listed thickness is 11.7 mm. These figures help frame the difference, but wrist shape and personal preference determine how either watch actually wears. Try both on if possible, rather than treating diameter alone as a fit verdict.

A slightly longer stated reserve
TUDOR gives the current 36 an approximately 70-hour power reserve, compared with the 58’s 65-hour METAS-certified reserve. Both movements are manufacture calibres and COSC-certified; the 58’s MT5400-U also carries METAS certification. The reserve figures and certification labels do not, by themselves, prove better real-world timekeeping or a difference in service cost.
Price depends on market and configuration
Compare prices in the same market and for the same kind of strap or bracelet. TUDOR’s 2026 Swiss list prices for the 58 are CHF 4,350 on five links, CHF 4,250 on three links and CHF 4,050 on rubber; its current range material lists CHF 3,650 for the 36 mm configuration. These are Swiss prices, not US conversions or US retail quotes.

For the United States, Tim Jeffreys reported on April 14, 2026, list prices of $5,350 for the 58 on a five-link bracelet, $5,225 on a three-link bracelet and $4,975 on rubber, and reported availability at that time. Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Black Bay 58 if you want the rotating timing bezel, the higher water-resistance rating and a more overtly dive-watch design, and you are comfortable with its 39 mm case dimensions.
- Choose the Black Bay 36 if a 36 mm case, fixed bezel and more restrained styling better suit your wrist and wardrobe, or if its approximately 70-hour stated reserve matters more to you than the 58’s dive-focused features.
- Try both before deciding if fit is the deciding factor. The published dimensions are a useful starting point, not a substitute for seeing how each case and bracelet sits on your wrist.
Why the Fifty-Eight is called the Fifty-Eight
The name refers to 1958, the year TUDOR introduced reference 7924, nicknamed the “Big Crown,” which the brand identifies as its first diver’s watch waterproof to 200 metres. The history is summarized in TUDOR product material reproduced on the GPHG Black Bay Fifty-Eight page.

Keep older comparisons in their period
A 2019 comparison of the earlier Black Bay 36 and original Black Bay 58 described the 36 as 36 mm thick? Actually, that article reported a 36 mm case, 10.5 mm thickness, 150 m water resistance and an ETA-based movement; its original 58 figures were 39 mm, 11.9 mm thick, 200 m water resistance, a COSC-certified MT5402 and a 70-hour reserve. Those are historical specifications, not the current models’ specifications. Its $2,850 and $3,575 MSRP figures are also historical, not current prices. The author’s styling and wrist impressions are subjective, not controlled testing or a consensus. See Rescapement’s 2019 comparison.
