How to Answer and Make Phone Calls on Apple Watch

Apple Watch can answer and make calls through a nearby iPhone, supported Wi‑Fi Calling, or an activated cellular plan. Here’s how each option works.

Yes—an Apple Watch can answer and make ordinary phone calls. When your iPhone is nearby, the watch normally uses Bluetooth and the iPhone’s mobile connection. When the iPhone is elsewhere, calling requires either a supported Wi‑Fi Calling setup or a cellular Apple Watch with an activated plan. FaceTime audio is another internet-based option.

What you need before making a call

Your Apple Watch needs a usable connection and, in most cases, a paired iPhone. The relevant connection may be:

  • Bluetooth: the watch is communicating with a nearby iPhone.
  • Wi‑Fi: the watch is connected to a compatible network. Ordinary phone-number calls away from the iPhone also require carrier-supported Wi‑Fi Calling.
  • Cellular: a GPS + Cellular watch has an activated, eligible mobile plan.

GPS-only models can call through the paired iPhone and may call independently through supported Wi‑Fi Calling, but they cannot connect to a mobile network by themselves. Cellular availability, supported models, carriers, countries, and plan eligibility vary; check Apple’s current connectivity guidance and cellular requirements.

Keep both devices on compatible, up-to-date software. Standard cellular setup generally requires the iPhone and watch to use the same carrier. Some prepaid, older, enterprise, and corporate plans may not qualify.

Call with Siri

Raise your wrist or activate Siri and say, for example:

  • “Hey Siri, call Mom.”
  • “Hey Siri, call 555-123-4567.”
  • “Hey Siri, call Alex using FaceTime audio.”

Siri may ask you to confirm a contact or choose between multiple numbers.

How to make a FaceTime audio call

FaceTime audio is an internet call, not a conventional carrier voice call. It can work over Wi‑Fi or cellular data when the required FaceTime account and connection are available.

You can ask Siri to call a contact using FaceTime audio, or choose a contact’s FaceTime audio option when available. You can also start one from Messages:

Can Apple Watch call without the iPhone nearby?

Use this decision guide:

Situation Calling result What is required
iPhone nearby Yes Pairing, Bluetooth or another connection, and phone service on the iPhone
iPhone away; cellular watch Yes Activated eligible plan and cellular coverage
iPhone away; compatible Wi‑Fi Usually, for phone-number calls Previously used compatible Wi‑Fi plus carrier-supported Wi‑Fi Calling
Internet available, but carrier calling unavailable FaceTime audio may work Internet access and compatible FaceTime setup
No iPhone, Wi‑Fi, or cellular connection No ordinary phone call There is no network path

Apple Watch generally tries Bluetooth to the nearby iPhone first, then compatible Wi‑Fi, then cellular on cellular models. A watch may not connect to public Wi‑Fi that requires a sign-in, subscription, or configuration profile. Wi‑Fi by itself does not guarantee ordinary phone calls.

Enable Wi‑Fi Calling for Apple Watch

On current iPhone software, try:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Tap Wi‑Fi Calling.
  4. Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  5. Turn on Add Wi‑Fi Calling For Other Devices, if that option appears.

On some iOS versions, the connected-device option is labelled differently:

  1. Open Settings > Cellular > Wi‑Fi Calling.
  2. Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  3. Return to the previous screen and tap Calls on Other Devices.
  4. Turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices.

Carrier support is required. Labels and paths can change between iOS releases. Apple’s Wi‑Fi Calling support page contains the current requirements and troubleshooting advice.

Set up cellular service

  1. On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch.
  3. Tap Cellular.
  4. Follow the carrier’s activation instructions.

You may also be offered cellular activation during initial watch setup. The watch must be a supported cellular model, the carrier must support Apple Watch service in your country or region, and the plan must be eligible. Coverage, roaming, Family Setup rules, and caller-ID behavior can differ from the iPhone. Do not assume the watch has a separately usable public phone number; paired cellular service may be associated with the iPhone line.

Cellular use consumes more battery than relying on Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi. If your iPhone is almost always with you, a GPS model or Wi‑Fi Calling may be sufficient. A cellular model is more useful when you regularly run, work, travel, or exercise without the iPhone.

Check the watch’s connection

Open Control Center on the watch. A green cellular icon indicates an active cellular connection. A white cellular icon can indicate that a cellular plan is active while the watch is currently using Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi. A Wi‑Fi icon indicates a Wi‑Fi connection. These indicators show connectivity, not necessarily that a particular call is using cellular.

Calling troubleshooting checklist

  1. Open Control Center and confirm that the watch has Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, or cellular connectivity.
  2. Check that the iPhone has mobile service when the watch is relying on it.
  3. Confirm that Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled on the iPhone.
  4. Confirm that Allow Calls on Other Devices or the equivalent connected-device setting is enabled.
  5. Make sure the watch is using a compatible Wi‑Fi network, not one requiring a web login.
  6. Check carrier eligibility, especially for prepaid, corporate, enterprise, or older plans.
  7. Update the iPhone and Apple Watch.
  8. Restart both devices.
  9. Try another Wi‑Fi network.
  10. Turn Wi‑Fi Calling off and on again.
  11. Reset network settings only as a last resort, since this removes saved network information.

When the iPhone is away, Low Power Mode can also affect calling. Wi‑Fi and cellular data may remain off until an app needs a network connection; incoming calls may go to voicemail and outgoing calls may take longer to start.

Audio, privacy, and emergency-call limits

A watch call is normally a speakerphone call. It can be practical in a quiet place, but people nearby may hear the conversation. Use AirPods or another compatible Bluetooth headset for privacy, or move a long or sensitive call to the iPhone.

Emergency calling is network-dependent. The watch may use a nearby iPhone, its own cellular connection, or supported Wi‑Fi Calling, depending on the situation. Apple notes that cellular may provide more accurate location information than Wi‑Fi when cellular is available. Emergency capabilities vary by model, location, region, and configuration; do not assume the watch can contact emergency services without a network connection or in every country. See Apple’s emergency-calling guidance.

Sources and current availability

For model, carrier, country, and plan compatibility, use Apple’s current cellular support page and your carrier’s official activation information. Hardware and service prices vary by country, carrier, taxes, promotions, and eligibility, so they should be checked at publication time rather than assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a GPS-only Apple Watch make calls?

Yes, through a nearby paired iPhone and, in supported circumstances, through Wi‑Fi Calling. It cannot use cellular networks independently.

Do I need a cellular plan?

Only if you want reliable ordinary phone calls away from the iPhone and outside compatible Wi‑Fi. Calls near the iPhone can use the iPhone’s connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can FaceTime audio work when regular calls do not?

FaceTime audio uses internet connectivity, while ordinary phone-number calls away from the iPhone also depend on carrier-supported Wi‑Fi Calling or cellular service.

Can I use AirPods for Apple Watch calls?

Yes. Pair compatible Bluetooth headphones with the watch to keep the conversation more private.
