Before paying for a pre-owned Patek Philippe, ask for its original documents and service history, check whether an Extract from the Archives is available, and make the sale conditional on an inspection by an authorized Patek Philippe retailer or service center. These checks provide different kinds of evidence: an archive extract compares the watch with recorded details, while an authorized provider can inspect the physical watch. Neither paperwork alone nor a seller’s assurances establish the condition and originality of every component.
Start with the seller’s evidence
Ask the seller for clear photographs of the watch, all documents being offered, and any service invoices. Make sure the pictures show the details needed to identify the specific watch, and compare the documents and watch description for consistency. Patek Philippe’s Extract from the Archives process also requires photographs for a visual comparison with its archived description.

If the seller claims the original Certificate of Origin is included, ask to see it. Patek Philippe says this certificate is supplied with a new watch, identifies the movement, case, and reference numbers, and cannot be reissued if lost. Its manual says the certificate is valid only when dated, signed by an Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer, and completed with the owner’s name. A certificate is useful documentary evidence, but it does not by itself establish the present condition or originality of every component.

What an Extract from the Archives can—and cannot—tell you
Patek Philippe describes the Extract as a partial transcript of archive information. The service describes recorded manufacturing history and relevant features, including the date of sale, and checks submitted photographs for visual compliance with the archived description. This can help you assess whether the watch and its description correspond with Patek Philippe’s records.

The Extract is not the original Certificate of Origin, a replacement for that certificate, or a comprehensive inspection of the watch as it exists today. The official description does not present it as a report on current condition, later repairs, or the originality of every component. Ask an authorized provider to inspect those physical aspects.
Eligibility, fee, and timing
Under Patek Philippe’s official terms accessed in 2026, a watch must have been first sold at least ten years before the request to qualify. The manufacturer allows one request per timepiece in each 12-month period. The stated fee is 500 Swiss francs, with delivery within ten weeks after order confirmation. Check the current terms before relying on the fee or timing, since these details can change.

Arrange a physical inspection through an authorized provider
Use Patek Philippe’s official retailer and service-center directory to verify that the provider is authorized. Patek Philippe says its watches must be serviced only by authorized retailers or service centers, and that a provider absent from its databases is not authorized.
Ask whether the provider can inspect the particular watch before purchase and what the inspection covers. Confirm the scope, cost, and timing directly with the provider; the official guidance establishes who is authorized to handle the watch, but does not specify a universal pre-purchase inspection package. If practical, make completion of the inspection a condition of sale.

Do not open the case yourself
The movement number is engraved on the movement, and the case number is engraved on the inside of the case back. Checking them requires removing the back. Patek Philippe says this should be done only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center. Do not use a case-opening tool or ask an unauthorized seller to open the watch merely to show the numbers; have an authorized provider handle it and compare the numbers with the available documents.
Protect the transaction as well as the watch
Put the watch’s identifying details and the seller’s authenticity representations in a written sale agreement. Set out the return terms and what happens if an authorized inspection does not support the seller’s claims. Consider payment protections appropriate to the transaction. These are buyer-protection measures, not terms prescribed by Patek Philippe.
If you need a resale-value opinion, Patek Philippe says it cannot provide current resale-value information and recommends consulting a specialized older-watch dealer or auction house. That is a valuation route, not a substitute for an authorized physical inspection.
Quick Recap
Use the checks together
- Documents: Check whether the original Certificate of Origin is present and whether its details correspond with the watch.

- Physical examination: Have an authorized retailer or service center inspect the watch and handle any case opening.
- Transaction terms: Agree in writing on authenticity representations, inspection conditions, and return or payment protections.
- Value: Seek a specialist dealer or auction house opinion if you need resale context.
