For any other listing, papers, serial information, photos or seller assurances are not conclusive: ask who inspected the actual watch, what the inspection covers, and what written return or authenticity remedy you have.
What Rolex authentication means
Rolex states that “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Its Certified Pre-Owned programme is the clearest route to that brand-backed confirmation for an eligible secondhand watch. A third-party inspection or certificate may provide additional assurance, but it is a separate service and should not be described as Rolex authentication.

For the strongest assurance, look for Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex CPO is available only through participating Official Rolex Retailers and applies to secondhand watches at least two years old. Rolex says eligible watches return to its workshops, where their original configuration is checked and components are authenticated; the watches are serviced and tested before sale. Rolex says a CPO watch comes with a distinct seal, a guarantee card and a new two-year international guarantee from purchase. Read Rolex’s CPO programme information.
Recommended Free Tools
- Find a participating retailer. Use Rolex’s official retailer information and ask whether the exact watch is being sold under the CPO programme. A retailer selling a used Rolex is not automatically selling a CPO watch.
- Confirm the watch and paperwork match. Ask to see the CPO seal and guarantee card for the watch being offered, and confirm when the two-year guarantee begins.
- Review the terms before paying. Make sure the seller identifies the watch, the guarantee issuer and start date, and any return or remedy terms in writing.
If the watch is not CPO, assess the inspection and the deal
A non-CPO Rolex may be inspected by a reputable watchmaker or covered by a third-party certification service, but that does not make it Rolex CPO. Ask questions that tie the evidence to the actual watch and the transaction:

- What is the exact reference and configuration being sold?
- Who physically inspected this watch, and what did the inspection cover?
- What service history is available, and have any components been replaced or are any parts aftermarket?
- Will the seller allow the inspection process they have promised, or an appropriate independent inspection?
- What written authenticity statement, return period or remedy applies if the watch is found not to match the description?
- Who is the seller, where are they located, and who provides any guarantee?
Chrono24 describes its Certified service as an inspection by a verified watchmaker, with a digital certificate and an authenticity guarantee for eligible watches marked Certified. It describes this as brand-independent and distinguishes it from manufacturer certification such as Rolex CPO. Check that the specific listing and your location qualify, and read the current service terms; a Chrono24 certificate is not a Rolex-issued authentication. See Chrono24’s service information.
Compare who stands behind each option
| Route | Who performs or provides the assurance | What the cited service says it covers | Guarantee or remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Certified Pre-Owned | Rolex workshops, with sale through a participating Official Rolex Retailer | Rolex says it checks original configuration, authenticates components, and services and tests eligible watches. | Rolex states a new two-year international guarantee from purchase. Confirm the card and start date for the watch offered. |
| Third-party certified listing | The named certification provider; for Chrono24 Certified, a verified watchmaker | Chrono24 describes inspection and a digital certificate for eligible listings marked Certified. The scope is the provider’s, not Rolex’s. | Chrono24 describes an authenticity guarantee for eligible watches; check the listing’s eligibility and current terms. |
| Seller-inspected or private listing | The seller or any separately named inspector | No universal inspection scope is established. Ask who examined the actual watch and request the findings in writing. | Depends on the seller’s written return, guarantee or remedy terms; do not assume Rolex coverage. |
These routes are not equivalent. Compare the exact watch and configuration, inspection provider and scope, condition and component disclosures, guarantee issuer and duration, start date, return rights, and seller identity. This is a practical comparison framework, not a Rolex scoring checklist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do box, papers or a serial number prove a Rolex is genuine?
No single document or detail should settle the question. A box, guarantee card, serial or reference information, visual inspection, or seller assurance by itself does not confirm authenticity. Match any documents to the exact watch and treat them as part of the evidence, not a substitute for inspection by the party whose assurance you are relying on. Rolex’s published guidance does not provide a consumer serial-number lookup or a do-it-yourself test that certifies a watch.
Understand the guarantee before relying on it
Rolex describes a five-year international guarantee for new watches sold originally by an Official Rolex Retailer with a properly completed guarantee card. That is not proof that every secondhand Rolex has five years of coverage. Rolex says the guarantee excludes wear and tear, loss, theft and damage from misuse, and is invalidated by adding or substituting components or accessories not made by Rolex. CPO watches have a separate new two-year international guarantee from purchase. Read Rolex’s guarantee terms.
When to walk away
Pause the purchase if the seller will not identify the exact watch, document the authenticity claim, clarify who performed an inspection, or provide the promised inspection or remedy terms. Do not use a convincing appearance to fill those gaps. The official material cited here does not establish a universal list of visual counterfeit tells, so a visual checklist cannot replace a defined inspection and a clear transaction remedy.
