Set an all-in spending cap before bidding, then calculate the highest hammer price that leaves room for the buyer’s premium, taxes, shipping and any other charges. Check the exact sale’s Conditions of Sale and fee schedule, submit a maximum bid at or below that ceiling, and stop when it is reached. The estimate is a guide—not a guaranteed value or a limit on the final price.
How do I set a watch-auction budget?
- Choose your all-in maximum. Base it on what you can actually pay after winning, not just the number you are prepared to bid.
- Check the exact lot and sale terms. Confirm the buyer’s premium, applicable taxes, shipping and handling, delivery arrangements, currency, payment deadline, registration requirements and any import costs for your destination. Fees can vary by sale, category and buyer location.
- Estimate the total using the auction house’s tool, if available. Christie’s directs bidders to a lot-page cost calculator for an estimate of the buyer’s premium and shipping. Treat the result as a planning aid and verify the terms for the specific sale: Christie’s buying guide.
- Work backward to a hammer-price ceiling. For a simple one-tier premium and no other costs, divide the amount available for the hammer price and premium by one plus the premium rate. For example, with a hypothetical 20% premium and $12,000 available for those two items, the arithmetic ceiling is $10,000. This is an illustration, not a current fee quote; taxes and other charges would reduce the maximum hammer bid.
- Check accepted bid increments. Use the increment schedule for the sale and currency. General guidance from Christie’s and Sotheby’s describes increments of up to or approximately 10%, but the auctioneer has discretion and actual schedules can differ by range and sale.
- Set the maximum before bidding and do not raise it under pressure. Competition, a rising estimate or fear of missing the lot does not increase your budget.
What does the auction hammer price include?
The hammer price is the winning bid accepted when the auctioneer closes the lot. It does not include the buyer’s premium. Phillips’ watch-auction glossary and buyer guidance distinguish the hammer price from fees such as the premium and applicable taxes.

The buyer’s premium is an auction-house fee added to the hammer price and paid by the winning bidder. Your all-in cost may also include taxes, shipping, handling, import charges or other fees, depending on the sale and your circumstances. An estimate is a specialist’s preliminary guide to the expected sale price; it is not a guarantee, and the result may be above or below it. Estimates generally exclude the premium and may exclude other charges.
How much should I bid above the estimate?
There is no reliable universal amount to add. The estimate is not a price cap, and bidding can finish above or below it. Decide what the particular watch is worth to you after considering its condition, completeness, service or restoration needs, provenance and supporting documentation. Then apply your all-in cap to the actual sale costs—not to the estimate.

Why auction fees vary by sale and location
Published rates are examples tied to particular terms, not universal watch-auction charges. For instance, Christie’s collecting-category schedule effective September 1, 2026 lists 28% of the hammer price up to and including US$2,000,000, 22% on the portion from US$2,000,000 to US$8,000,000, and 15% on the portion above US$8,000,000. The schedule has currency and category qualifications and excludes local sales taxes. Check the applicable sale terms at Christie’s financial information.

How to use an absentee or maximum bid
An absentee or maximum bid is an advance instruction for the auction platform to bid on your behalf up to a specified limit. It can help you stick to your pre-set ceiling, but check the platform’s rules for tie handling, increments and cancellation before submitting. Christie’s says its platform bids up to the bidder’s maximum and that submitted bids cannot be cancelled; see its bidding guidance.
Once the bidding reaches your cap, stop. Do not increase the maximum because another bidder is still interested. A submitted bid may create a binding commitment, so read the Conditions of Sale and lot-specific notices before placing it.

What to check about the watch before bidding
Read the lot description and condition report, and confirm exactly what is included. Ask the auction house about material uncertainties before bidding. For a significant-value lot, Phillips’ Hong Kong watch buyer guide recommends viewing it at a pre-sale exhibition and considering an independent restorer or professional adviser.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Review the condition report and ask about anything important that remains unclear.
- Confirm which accessories, papers and other items are included with the lot.
- Consider whether condition, completeness, provenance and possible service needs affect your personal maximum.
- For a high-value watch, seek an appropriate independent professional assessment. A photograph or simple inspection tool cannot by itself establish authenticity, provenance or mechanical condition.
Before bidding, read the Conditions of Sale and the lot-specific notices for the exact sale. They govern the auction and purchase, including applicable fees and bidding rules.
