Build a useful watch shortlist in this order: set a spending ceiling, measure your wrist, check each watch’s lug-to-lug length and thickness, then compare its style, movement, and strap or bracelet with how you plan to wear it. This keeps an appealing design or a familiar case-diameter number from distracting you from fit and everyday practicality.
1. Set a comfortable spending ceiling
Choose the most you are comfortable spending before browsing, then compare watches that fit within that limit. Keep the ceiling flexible enough to account for the complete watch you want, including the bracelet or strap and any fit adjustments. There is no universal budget tier that determines what you should buy; the right range depends on your finances and priorities.

2. Measure your wrist where the watch will sit
Measure the circumference just behind the wrist bone, where you expect the watch to rest. Victorinox recommends using a soft measuring tape and keeping the measurement handy when comparing watches. Victorinox’s watch-fit guide treats the measurement as a starting point for choosing a case, not a substitute for evaluating the actual watch.

If you do not have a soft tape, a strip of paper can help you mark the circumference; compare that mark with a ruler. Record the unit you use—centimeters or inches—and use it consistently when consulting sizing guidance.
3. Check the watch’s footprint, not just its diameter
Case diameter is only one part of fit. Lug-to-lug is the watch’s vertical footprint: the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. Because lug shape varies, two watches with the same diameter can span different amounts of wrist. Case thickness matters too: a thicker watch may feel bulkier and sit less easily under a sleeve.
Use wrist width and lug-to-lug together
Compare the watch’s lug-to-lug measurement with the flat width across the top of your wrist. Victorinox advises that lug-to-lug should be at or below wrist width. This is a practical fit check, not a guarantee: wrist shape and the curve of the lugs affect how a watch sits.

The independent lug²lug size guide, updated July 1, 2026, gives approximate lug-to-lug ceilings of 47 mm for a 6.5-inch wrist and 49–50 mm for a 7-inch wrist. It presents these as rules of thumb, not a sizing standard. Treat them as a way to narrow candidates, then check the exact model and, if possible, try it on.
Treat diameter charts as rough guidance
Published charts use different ranges. Victorinox gives 38–42 mm as a general case-diameter range that suits many wrists. Longines suggests 32–36 mm for wrists below about 16 cm, 36–42 mm for wrists from 16 to 17.8 cm, and 42–46 mm above that. These are each brand’s broad recommendations, not guarantees or universal rules.
Case geometry and wrist shape can change the way a watch wears, so do not choose by diameter alone. Check the exact model’s diameter, lug-to-lug length, and thickness in its specifications; try it on when that is practical. 4. Match the style to where you will wear it
Start with the settings and clothes you expect the watch to accompany. Victorinox describes dress watches as slim and understated, field or pilot watches as legible, and diver or sport watches as robust and water resistant. These are category cues from the manufacturer, not assurances about every watch in a category. Check the specific watch’s features, especially its water-resistance rating, rather than inferring capability from its appearance.

- For formal settings: A slim, understated design may sit more comfortably under a cuff.
- For quick reading: Field- or pilot-style designs often emphasize legibility; inspect the dial and hands on the particular model.
- For active or wet use: A sport or dive design may be a candidate, but verify the watch’s actual water-resistance specifications and intended use.
5. Choose a movement you are happy to own
Movement choice is a preference about use and maintenance as much as watch style. Victorinox characterizes quartz as accurate and low-maintenance, automatic as self-winding, and manual-wind as traditional and tactile. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independently tested comparisons.
- Quartz: Consider it if you want a straightforward ownership routine and do not want to wind the watch regularly.
- Automatic: Consider it if you like a mechanical watch that winds through wrist movement. If it is not worn, it may stop and need resetting.
- Manual-wind: Consider it if winding the watch by hand is part of the appeal and you are comfortable making it a routine.
Before adding a candidate, check its specific movement and care requirements. The movement type alone does not establish all service intervals, costs, or performance characteristics.

6. Check strap or bracelet fit and compatibility
The lug width determines which strap widths are compatible, so check that measurement before assuming a replacement strap will fit. Also consider how the watch will feel during the day and whether its original strap or bracelet suits your wardrobe and routine.
Longines recommends leather for a classic look, metal bracelets for a more substantial appearance, and fabric or NATO straps for casual versatility. These are the manufacturer’s style recommendations; comfort and appearance are personal, and a strap’s material does not by itself determine how well a watch fits.

7. Compare candidates on the same checklist
Once you have a few candidates, use the same criteria for each rather than letting one attractive specification dominate the decision.
- Spend: Does the current total fit within your ceiling?
- Footprint: How do diameter, lug-to-lug length, and thickness compare with your wrist and clothing?
- Use and style: Does the watch’s actual design and documented capability fit the settings where you will wear it?
- Movement: Does its ownership routine suit your preferences?
- Strap or bracelet: Is the fit right, and can you confirm the lug width if you expect to change it?
If two watches remain close, try them on if possible and compare how each sits across your wrist and under a sleeve. A shortlist should make the trade-offs visible; it does not need to point to one universally best watch.
