Before buying a pre-owned Breitling Navitimer, identify its exact reference and serial number, match them against the watch’s records, and assess condition and service history. If anything is unclear, ask Breitling to route the watch to a Main Center for authentication; paperwork, a Digital Passport, or an Archive Extract alone does not prove that the physical watch is genuine or in good condition.
Start by identifying the exact Navitimer
“Navitimer” names a collection, not one configuration. Compare listings by the exact reference, movement, case size, dial, and bracelet or strap—not by collection name alone. A difference in configuration can affect what you are actually buying, so ask the seller to provide the reference and clear photographs of the caseback and dial before comparing watches.

Reference and serial number are not interchangeable
Breitling describes a reference as identifying a model, including its design, movement, and features. The serial identifies an individual watch. The reference appears on purchase documents and is engraved on the caseback; Breitling says serial numbers have been unique for each watch since 2000. Compare both identifiers on the watch with the paperwork and any available Digital Passport record. A number on a watch or card by itself does not establish that the watch is genuine.

Breitling’s FAQ says a caseback model number whose second letter is B and is followed by two digits from 01 through 35 indicates a Manufacture mechanical movement. Treat that as an identification clue to check against the watch’s records, not a standalone authenticity test.

Check records, but don’t mistake them for authentication
Digital Passport and purchase documents
Breitling says its Digital Passport may provide product details, warranty status, ownership history, a COSC certificate, and user documentation. Registration and transfer of passport ownership are handled through the account process described in Breitling’s support information. Use the passport and purchase documents as corroboration: the reference and serial still need to match the physical watch.
Archive Extract for eligible vintage watches
For eligible watches dated 1946–1979, Breitling offers an Archive Extract that can include the manufacture year, case material, and reference. The extract is prepared from information supplied by the applicant, including the case serial, without a physical inspection. Breitling explicitly states that it is not an authenticity certificate, warranty, proof of ownership, or confirmation of current condition. It can help with historical details, but it cannot establish that the watch in a listing is genuine.

When to request official authentication
If the identifiers conflict, the records cannot be checked, or the purchase risk warrants additional assurance, ask a Breitling service center or boutique to route the watch to a Breitling Main Center. Breitling says the process includes analysis and delivery of a Certificate of Authenticity. Fees and return times vary, and non-compliant parts may involve additional charges. Agree with the seller in writing on who pays and what happens if the watch does not pass. Breitling boutiques and service centers do not assess a watch’s value.
Inspect condition and establish likely service needs
Request photographs and function checks
Ask for clear, well-lit images of the dial, hands, crystal, bezel and slide rule, case edges, pushers, crown, caseback, bracelet or strap, and clasp. Look for damage, uneven wear, mismatched or poorly aligned components, and signs of excessive polishing. Ask the seller to demonstrate the chronograph starting, stopping, and resetting consistently. These are buyer inspection checks, not a Navitimer-specific authentication test; no single visual detail proves genuineness. If a component or function raises concern, have a qualified watchmaker assess it before purchase.

Read service records for dates, work, and parts
Request dated invoices and check who performed the work, what was done, and which components were replaced. Breitling recommends maintenance service every two years and complete service every four to six years. Its FAQ describes maintenance as including movement and function checks, seals, a water-resistance check, and case and bracelet cleaning. Complete service includes disassembly, cleaning, replacement of standard movement parts as needed, lubrication, adjustment, seal replacement, and a water-resistance check. An invoice helps you understand the watch’s history; it is not a substitute for assessing its present condition.
Do not assume a used watch is safe in water
An engraved water-resistance rating does not establish current water safety. Breitling says gaskets age and should be replaced, and recommends regular water-resistance testing—about once a year for watches frequently exposed to water. If you may wear the watch in water, ask for a recent test record and do not rely on the rating alone before immersion.

Interpret chronometer performance carefully
Breitling’s FAQ gives a COSC mechanical chronometer tolerance of −4 to +6 seconds per day. That is a certification standard, not a promise that a particular pre-owned watch still performs within that range. If timekeeping matters to you, ask for a recent performance check or have the watch assessed independently.

The warranty covers manufacturing defects and excludes issues such as damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Verify the activation or purchase date and remaining term in the individual watch’s record; do not assume coverage transfers or remains available to every secondhand buyer. Breitling states that warranty-period service or repair must be performed by an authorized Breitling Service Center.
Compare the whole purchase, not just the asking price
Use the same checklist for each specific listing. If a seller cannot substantiate a detail, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the most favorable answer.
- Configuration: exact reference, movement, size, dial, and bracelet or strap.
- Originality and condition: condition and consistency of the dial, hands, case, bezel and slide rule, pushers, crystal, bracelet, and clasp.
- Service: service date, provider, invoice detail, replaced parts, and any remaining service warranty.
- Records: matching reference and serial, available Digital Passport and warranty information, and whether official authentication can be arranged.
- Seller protections: reputation, written return window, payment protection, and agreement on authentication or service costs.
- Likely ownership cost: add any overdue service or repair needs to the asking price before deciding.
Breitling does not provide watch valuations through its boutiques or service centers, and the information here does not establish current fair prices by Navitimer reference. Avoid treating a brand authentication result as a valuation or relying on an unsupported market-price estimate.
