Match the exact reference and configuration, inspect condition and service records, and compare prices only with genuinely comparable watches.
Choose between Rolex Certified Pre-Owned and a non-certified listing
The clearest documented route to Rolex certification is the RCPO program. Rolex says it applies to second-hand watches at least two years old and is available only through participating authorized points of sale. Establish the exact watch before judging it
Ask for the reference and full configuration before comparing prices or arranging an inspection. Record the dial, case size, bracelet, clasp, included links, and any replacement parts or service components the seller knows about. Ask for serial information to be handled safely; do not treat a serial or a photograph of one as proof of authenticity.
Have a qualified watchmaker verify that the reference, calibre, and stated configuration are consistent. Request original purchase and service records where available, but treat documents as supporting evidence rather than definitive proof. Inspect condition with specific questions
Before committing, request clear, current photographs and a written description. For a significant purchase, arrange an in-person examination or an independent inspection with the seller’s written approval.

Case, bezel, and finishing
Look closely at the bezel, lugs, edges, and the boundaries between brushed and polished surfaces. Dents, deep scratches, and heavy polishing can affect both appearance and value; polishing can soften the case’s original geometry. Ask the watchmaker to assess the finish rather than relying on a seller’s broad description such as “excellent.”
Dial, hands, and crystal
Ask whether the dial, hands, and crystal are original or have been replaced. Check for visible damage, moisture signs, uneven or suspicious-looking printing, and parts that do not match the stated configuration. A watchmaker can assess details under magnification; photographs alone cannot settle authenticity.
Bracelet and clasp
Check clasp operation and wear, bracelet fit, missing links, and visible looseness between links. Have bracelet stretch assessed by a watchmaker instead of accepting an adjective such as “tight” or “lightly worn.” Confirm that the bracelet and clasp are appropriate for the stated watch configuration.

Movement, timing, and service history
Ask for dated service documentation and a written condition report. An independent watchmaker can check movement operation and timing, and can flag work that may affect the watch’s cost or value. A watch’s age alone does not establish that it needs service; let its condition and inspection findings guide that decision.

Rolex’s FAQ gives at least 100 metres as the Oyster Perpetual product specification, but that does not establish the water resistance of an individual older pre-owned watch. Rolex’s RCPO guidance also identifies waterproofness exceptions for some older models. Have the specific watch tested before exposing it to water, and do not swim or shower in an unverified example. These are not interchangeable benchmarks: the first is for a specific 126000-0005 variation, while the second covers reference 126000 at guide level. Neither figure should be applied automatically to another reference or configuration.
When comparing candidate listings, match the details that change what is being offered:

- Exact reference and dial configuration.
- Year and warranty status.
- Case condition, including evidence of polishing or damage.
- Bracelet completeness and condition.
- Box, papers, and other included items.
- Service history and inspection findings.
- Seller protections, country, taxes, and shipping.
WatchCharts says its estimate considers condition, delivery contents, and location, so comparing bare asking prices can mislead. The cited figures do not establish a price for every Oyster Perpetual model, a localized range for every buyer, or a universal premium for RCPO watches.

Protect the transaction before sending payment
Certification and condition checks do not replace clear purchase terms. Before paying, get the return window, payment protections, shipping arrangements, and any seller guarantee in writing. Confirm who pays for an inspection and what happens if the watch fails it. If shipped, verify that shipping is insured for the transaction value and understand the process for a claim. No universal marketplace or seller guarantee applies to every listing.
For a non-RCPO watch, make the sale conditional on an independent inspection if possible. Agree in advance on a practical return or cancellation option if the watch’s identity, condition, or function differs materially from the written description.
