Before using water, check the watch’s user guide for its water-resistance rating and instructions; a luxury watch is not automatically safe to swim or shower in.
A simple daily routine
- Wipe gently. Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and surface dust. This is a light upkeep step, not a way to remove scratches.
- Keep water use model-specific. Read the exact user guide before rinsing or washing the watch. If the maker permits cleaning with water, follow its instructions for the crown, pushers and other controls.
- Limit avoidable hazards. Protect the watch from hard shocks, prolonged vibration, extreme temperature changes and magnetic fields.
- Use the right movement instructions. Winding and restarting procedures differ among manual, automatic and quartz watches. Follow the guide for your model rather than applying another brand’s routine.
Rolex recommends occasional microfiber-cloth wiping and, for the case and metal bracelet, washing with soapy water and a soft brush. It says to screw the winding crown down properly before cleaning, and excludes leather straps from that wash method. See Rolex’s care and service FAQ. Do not assume those directions apply to another maker or to every Rolex model.

Clean the bracelet or strap according to its material
Metal bracelets
First confirm that the watch’s guide allows the cleaning method you intend to use. If the watch has been exposed to salt water, Rolex recommends rinsing it with fresh water to remove salt and sand. Patek Philippe also advises rinsing its metal bracelets after exposure to salt water or chlorinated pool water. Patek Philippe recommends correct bracelet sizing and avoiding wrist jewelry that could abrade the watch. Its Watch Care Recommendations distinguish bracelet care from leather-strap care.
A soft-bristle brush may help with a maker-approved wash, but do not scrub aggressively or treat a brush as a scratch remover. Rolex’s soapy-water and soft-brush instructions apply to the case and metal bracelet, not its leather straps.

Leather straps
Do not wash a leather strap using the metal-bracelet method. Patek Philippe warns that water and excessive sunlight can make leather age prematurely. It recommends removing the watch at night so the strap can breathe. Check the maker’s instructions for your particular strap before applying any product or cleaning method.
Check water resistance before getting the watch wet
Water resistance is specific to the watch and depends on its construction, condition and correct operation of its seals and controls. A depth rating is not a universal promise that any luxury watch can be worn in a pool, shower or while diving. Verify the rating and permitted activities in the exact model guide before exposure.

For context, Rolex’s current online FAQ lists at least 100 metres of water resistance for Oyster Perpetual watches and 50 metres for the Perpetual 1908, with higher ratings for certain Oyster models. These are Rolex model-category specifications, not a rule for other brands. Rolex says the winding crown must be screwed down tightly to maintain water resistance. Check the Rolex FAQ for its current model guidance.
Patek Philippe tells owners to consult the user guide for their specific watch. Under the Patek Philippe Seal/NIHS 92-20 context described in its care recommendations, it says water-resistant Patek Philippe watches can be used for listed everyday aquatic activities and diving to 30 metres. That is Patek Philippe guidance, not a general standard for luxury watches. The brand also cautions against operating controls underwater or while the watch is wet. Its care recommendations link to model-specific advice; owners can locate instructions by watch or caliber reference in its user-guide directory.

Do not press pushers, operate correctors or use the time-setting crown underwater or while wet if the maker cautions against it. If you are unsure whether the crown is secured correctly, or whether the watch’s resistance remains reliable, keep it dry and ask the maker or an authorized service channel.
Protect the watch from everyday hazards
Shocks, vibration and temperature
Patek Philippe recommends avoiding shocks, prolonged vibration and extreme temperature changes as much as possible. These precautions matter even when the watch is designed for daily wear: do not assume a robust appearance makes a particular model suitable for every activity.

Magnetic fields
Patek Philippe advises avoiding magnetic exposure where possible. If the watch has been exposed to magnetism, the brand recommends taking it to an official service center or authorized retailer for demagnetization. A change in timekeeping alone does not establish the cause, so do not diagnose a mechanical fault from one symptom.
Follow your movement’s winding instructions
Manual, automatic and quartz watches do not share one winding routine. Consult the exact guide before winding or restarting an unfamiliar watch.

- Automatic Rolex watches: Rolex says daily wear removes the need to wind its automatic watches. Its care page says at least 25 turns are required for adequate partial winding when starting a stopped Rolex.
- Quartz watches: Follow the model’s user guide for operation and service; winding directions for mechanical watches do not apply automatically.
These are manufacturer-specific directions, not interchangeable rules. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations and Rolex’s FAQ give the cited brand guidance; use your watch’s own instructions when they differ.
Plan professional servicing around the maker’s guidance
Service intervals vary by brand, model and use. Rolex currently recommends service approximately every 10 years, depending on the model and real-life use. Patek Philippe recommends that quartz and mechanical watches with manual or self-winding movements be serviced every eight to ten years through an official Service Center or Authorized Retailer. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independently measured universal intervals. Follow the guidance for your model and seek qualified help if the watch’s condition warrants attention.
For Rolex, the published service process includes a watchmaker’s assessment and estimate; movement disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning; inspection and replacement of components when needed; lubrication; seal replacement; precision checks and pressure testing. Case and bracelet refinishing is available on request. Rolex says a complete overhaul takes at least four to six weeks depending on condition; that is a Rolex estimate, not a general service timeline. Details are in Rolex’s service FAQ.

A microfiber cloth can remove fingerprints, but it cannot restore a scratched finish. Avoid consumer polishing compounds and abrasive tools on a luxury watch: polishing can alter the finish, and the appropriate treatment depends on the case and bracelet. Rolex says polishing its case and bracelet should be performed only by an Official Rolex Service Center. For another maker’s watch, ask its official service channel what is appropriate before authorizing refinishing.
