Sapphire resists scratches well, but it can still be damaged. Treat a visible crack, damage that raises doubt about the crystal, or persistent condensation inside the glass as a reason to have the watch checked before relying on it underwater.
What sapphire can—and cannot—take
Sapphire watch crystals are made from synthetic sapphire, a form of crystallized aluminum oxide. Citizen describes sapphire as 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, where diamond is 10, and as very difficult to scratch. That hardness is not a promise that every crystal is scratch-proof or immune to impact: the crystal’s construction, any coating, and the force and angle of an impact all matter.

Citizen also notes a trade-off with mineral crystal: mineral is more flexible and less prone to shattering, while sapphire is harder to scratch. This comparison does not establish that one material is universally safer for diving. For an individual watch, the model’s construction and manufacturer’s instructions are more useful than a general material label.
How to clean the crystal and watch
For fingerprints and everyday grime
Wipe the exterior with a clean, soft cloth. Seiko recommends a soft cloth for moisture, sweat, and dirt; Rolex recommends occasional cleaning with a microfibre cloth. A clean microfiber cloth is a practical option, but it will not repair scratches. Avoid abrasive polishing compounds and home resurfacing: the cited manufacturer guidance does not recommend them.

After seawater or a day at the beach
Salt and sand should be removed with fresh water, then the watch should be dried thoroughly. The washing method is model-specific. Seiko’s cited diver instructions say to place the watch in a bowl of water rather than direct running faucet water onto that watch family. Rolex recommends a fresh-water rinse after diving or a day at the beach. Follow your own watch’s manual rather than applying either instruction universally.
Before cleaning, check the manual for any requirements about securing the crown or other controls. Where the manufacturer requires a screw-down crown to be secured, make sure it is properly secured. Do not wash a watch unless its water-resistance category and instructions permit it; Seiko’s daily-care guidance also warns against washing with the crown extended.

What to check before diving
Inspect the crystal and band for visible cracks or scratches, and use the manufacturer’s full pre-dive checklist. A clean-looking crystal does not prove that the watch remains water-resistant. Seiko’s dive instructions also call for checking that the crown and button screws are secured and warn against operating the crown or buttons underwater. Avoid striking the watch against hard objects; Seiko specifically cautions, “Take care not to bump the watch against hard objects such as rocks.”

When damage or moisture needs service
If the crystal is cracked or visibly damaged, do not rely on the watch for diving until an appropriate service provider has checked it. The same applies to persistent condensation or water inside the glass. Seiko’s handling guidance identifies persistent internal condensation as a service concern and warns that prolonged moisture and dirt can affect water resistance as seals or glass adhesive deteriorate. Contact the watch’s manufacturer, retailer, or an authorized service provider as appropriate; do not try to restore the crystal or seals at home.

Use the service schedule for your model
Service intervals are not universal. Seiko recommends an overhaul every three to four years for the model family covered by its cited H851 after-sales instructions. That interval should not be transferred to another Seiko family or another brand. Check your own manual or ask the manufacturer or an authorized service center what inspection and service schedule applies to your watch.
