To care for a Seiko chronograph, identify the caliber on the case back and follow that caliber’s manual. The models do not all share the same pusher design or operating instructions. The most important water-related precaution is straightforward: do not press a button or operate the crown when the watch is wet.

Find the caliber and the correct instructions

Look for the caliber code engraved on the case back, then use Seiko’s instruction manual lookup to find the instructions for that watch. Follow the manual for its pusher operation, crown use, and water-related limits rather than assuming that advice for another Seiko chronograph applies.

For example, Seiko’s 8R46/8R48 mechanical chronograph instructions identify Button A as start/stop and Button B as reset. They also say not to pull the crown to adjust the time or date while the stopwatch is running, and to check that the center stopwatch hand is at zero before starting. These steps apply to those calibers, not automatically to every Seiko chronograph. See Seiko’s 8R46/8R48 chronograph instructions.

Keep pushers dry when operating them

Seiko’s general water-resistance guidance says: “Do not operate the crown or press a button when the watch is wet.” Dry the watch before using the pushers. The same general guidance cautions against putting a water-resistant watch in water with its crown pulled out.

Seiko’s 8R46/8R48 daily-care instructions also advise pressing a button occasionally to help prevent button corrosion. Treat that as ordinary maintenance when the watch is dry; it does not override the instruction not to operate buttons while wet. See Seiko’s 8R46/8R48 daily-care guidance.

Clean the case and pushers gently

Wipe away moisture, sweat, and dirt with a soft cloth. For a water-resistant watch exposed to seawater, Seiko advises rinsing it with fresh water and drying it thoroughly. Its care guidance recommends putting clean water in a bowl rather than holding the watch under a running faucet. Do not use this rinse method on a watch whose rating does not allow water exposure; check the case-back marking and the model’s manual first.

Avoid benzine, thinner, bleach, and other solvents or chemicals, which can cause reactions or discoloration. Use a soft cloth rather than abrasive polishing products, particularly on coated cases or crystals. Seiko’s watch care FAQ covers cleaning and water-resistance care.

Check water resistance before exposing the watch to water

Start with the water-resistance marking on the case back, then check Seiko’s water-resistance table and the exact model manual for permitted activities. A nominal rating alone does not establish that a particular watch is safe for a specific activity today.

Seiko warns that “A watch’s water resistance is not permanently guaranteed.” Aging gaskets or deformation after a shock can affect it. The cited guidance recommends regular checking but does not specify a universal inspection interval. If you do not know the watch’s condition or service history, get advice from Seiko or a retailer before relying on its water resistance.

Do not assume chronograph pushers can be used underwater

Whether a chronograph may be operated underwater depends on the exact watch and its instructions. The general Seiko sources do not establish permission to press chronograph buttons underwater across all Seiko models. Consult the manual for your caliber and follow its limits; do not infer that a water-resistance rating makes underwater pusher use acceptable.

What to do if a pusher feels abnormal

If a pusher sticks, feels unusually stiff, or does not return normally, stop using it. Do not press harder, pry at it, use a tool, or open the case. The symptoms alone do not establish what has failed. Ask a Seiko retailer or Seiko customer service to assess the watch.

If condensation persists or water appears inside the case, contact Seiko or a retailer rather than continuing to operate the watch. Avoid pressing the buttons or adjusting the crown while arranging an assessment.
