First identify the attachment: quick-release, hidden-bar, and screw-fixed designs may require different steps or parts. If the mechanism is unfamiliar, difficult to reach, or resistant, stop and use a qualified watchmaker or the brand’s service center.
Check the attachment before you begin
Look up the watch’s exact model in its manual or manufacturer guidance before applying a tool. A conventional spring bar has a small retractable end that sits in a hole in each lug. Other watches may have an integrated quick-release lever, a hidden spring bar, or a screw-fixed strap. These systems are not interchangeable, and a forked spring-bar tool is not appropriate for every design.

Confirm that the replacement strap fits the exact watch and uses the correct attachment and spring bars. Model-specific straps or tools may be required; do not assume a strap described as “universal” will fit a proprietary system. Manufacturers including TAG Heuer and Vostok Europe describe model-dependent replacement requirements.
Prepare a scratch-conscious work area
- Choose a clean, stable, soft surface, such as a watch work mat or clean towel. Grit trapped on the surface can scratch the watch.
- Set the watch caseback-up, with the dial and crystal resting safely on the soft surface, and hold it securely while you work.
- For a conventional spring bar, use a suitable forked spring-bar tool. Avoid improvised metal tools that are difficult to control.
- Make sure you can see the bar end and the lug hole clearly. Good access helps keep the tool from slipping across the case.
A soft surface protects against contact with a hard worktop, but it cannot prevent every slip. Orient and Vostok Europe both recommend a soft surface during strap handling; Breitling specifically cautions that careful handling helps avoid scratching the inner side of the lugs.

Remove a conventional spring-bar strap
- Work on one strap end at a time. If needed, ease the strap away from the lug just enough to expose the spring bar’s notched end.
- Position the tool. Place the forked tip on the notch of the spring-bar end between the strap and lug.
- Depress and release. Press the bar inward, away from the lug hole, while gently easing the strap out. Keep the tool controlled; do not drag or lever its metal tip across a visible case surface.
- Remove the other end. Repeat on the opposite lug, then remove the second strap section in the same way.
Use controlled pressure rather than force. If the bar will not move, the access is poor, or the strap resists, stop rather than risk bending a component or slipping against the case. Breitling’s strap-change guide and Orient’s instructions show the forked-tool approach for conventional spring bars.
Install the replacement strap and check the fit
- Check the bars. Use spring bars of the correct type and size for the watch and strap.
- Place the strap between the lugs. Set one end of the spring bar into its lug hole.
- Seat the other end. Depress the free end with the forked tool, guide it into the opposing lug hole, and release it. Repeat for the other strap section.
- Inspect and test. Check that both ends of each bar are seated in their holes. Gently pull each strap section to confirm it is retained before wearing the watch.
A faint click is described by NOMOS for its watches, but it is not a universal test for every model. The important check is that the bar ends are seated and the strap stays attached under a gentle pull.

When the procedure is different—or it is better to stop
Quick-release spring bars
Some straps have an integrated lever that retracts the spring bar without a separate tool. Follow the maker’s instructions for the exact model, then verify the strap is secure. Vostok Europe’s manual describes a quick-release system designed for tool-free changes.

Hidden spring bars
Some cases conceal the bars under the lugs, and some makers specify a model-specific tool. Do not probe around the case or improvise a way to reach the bar; consult the watch instructions or ask a watchmaker. NOMOS explains hidden-bar and quick-change arrangements in its strap-changing guide.

Metal bracelets
A tight bracelet end link can make the spring bar harder to reach than one on a simple leather or rubber strap. Orient warns that bracelet removal can be difficult for many users and that a spring-bar tip resting on a lug can scratch it. If you cannot position the tool cleanly or the bracelet resists, leave the job to a professional.
Screw-fixed or proprietary straps
These designs need the correct procedure and parts, not a conventional spring-bar method. Vostok Europe notes that its screw-fixed straps are custom-made for its watches and warns that overtightening can damage screws, lugs, or strap components. Check the exact model instructions before attempting removal.

Valuable, delicate, or unfamiliar watches
Choose professional service if the watch is valuable or delicate, the attachment is unfamiliar, or the manufacturer recommends service. TAG Heuer warns that strap replacement can be delicate and recommends professional help whenever possible. Venezianico likewise advises consulting a qualified watchmaker if you are uncertain, in its strap-change guidance.

Manufacturer instructions explain precautions and warn that scratches can happen, but they do not establish a measured probability of scratching or prove that any method eliminates the risk. Treat a careful home change as a way to reduce avoidable contact, not a guarantee of a scratch-free result.
