How to Change the Battery on Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones

The Bose QC15 uses two replaceable AAA batteries. Most newer Bose noise-cancelling headphones have internal lithium-ion batteries, so troubleshoot charging first and use Bose or qualified repair service rather than a generic DIY procedure.

The procedure depends on the model. Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones use two replaceable AAA batteries. Most newer Bose noise-cancelling headphones—including the QC25, QC35, QC35 II, QC45, QuietComfort, QuietComfort Ultra, Ultra 2nd Gen, and Noise Cancelling Headphones 700—use an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery with no ordinary battery door.

For internal-battery models, troubleshoot charging and software first. If the battery has genuinely lost capacity, use Bose’s Repair or replace process or a qualified repairer. Do not follow a generic earcup-disassembly tutorial.

  • Two AAA batteries in a control box: this is characteristic of the QuietComfort 15.
  • USB charging port: assume the battery is internal unless the exact owner’s guide says otherwise.
  • Removable audio cable: this does not mean the rechargeable battery is removable.
  • Earbuds rather than over-ear headphones: battery procedures are different and this guide does not cover them.

Bose’s general battery-removal guidance says not to remove a battery unless the product documentation expressly describes it as customer-replaceable.

How to replace the batteries in the QuietComfort 15

The QC15 is the main exception. Its owner’s guide specifies two AAA alkaline batteries, IEC LR03.

  1. Turn the headphones off.
  2. Locate and open the battery compartment on the control box.
  3. Remove both old AAA batteries.
  4. Insert two fresh batteries, matching the polarity markings.
  5. Close the compartment securely.
  6. Turn the headphones on and confirm that they operate normally.

The QC15 guide says rechargeable NiMH batteries can be used, but they may provide approximately half the average life of alkaline batteries, and the low-battery indicator may not be calibrated for them. See the QC15 owner’s guide for the model’s instructions and disposal information.

Do not use this procedure on the QC25, QC35, QC45, QuietComfort, Ultra, Ultra 2nd Gen, or NC700. Those models do not accept AAA batteries as a substitute for their internal rechargeable packs.

What to try before replacing an internal battery

Short runtime does not automatically prove that the battery is worn out. A cable, charger, charging port, firmware problem, setting, or charging circuit can produce similar symptoms.

  1. Disconnect the audio cable, if fitted, and test the headphones wirelessly.
  2. Try another compatible USB cable.
  3. Try another charger or powered USB port. For the QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen, Bose specifically recommends a charger rated at least 1 A / 1000 mA.
  4. Inspect the charging port. Look for lint, debris, looseness, or visible damage. Do not force objects into the port.
  5. Charge the headphones fully before judging runtime.
  6. Update the firmware. Bose provides updates through the Bose app or Bose Updater. Bose says an app transfer may take up to 40 minutes and installation up to 15 minutes; these are stated maximum guidance, not a guarantee.
  7. Use the reset procedure for the exact model. Bose does not use one universal reset sequence.
  8. Retest with high-drain features reduced. On the QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen, Immersive Audio, notifications, application sounds, and other device tones can reduce apparent runtime. On the original Ultra, check whether Sleep is being mistaken for full power-off; Bose explains its power states in the power and sleep support article.

QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen reboot sequence

Use this sequence only for the QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen, and verify the current instructions on Bose’s battery troubleshooting page:

  1. Disconnect the USB charging and audio cables.
  2. Connect the charger to power, but do not connect it to the headphones yet.
  3. Press and hold the Power/Bluetooth button.
  4. While holding the button, connect the USB cable to the left earcup.
  5. Wait for the power light to blink twice.
  6. Wait two seconds, then release the button.
  7. If the headphones remain unresponsive, repeat the sequence once.

When is the battery probably worn out?

Battery wear becomes more likely when runtime remains dramatically shorter after a full charge across several tests, the charge falls rapidly at modest volume with normal settings, the headphones shut down while showing substantial charge, or they charge unusually quickly and then die unusually quickly.

Can Bose replace the battery?

Bose support pages provide a Repair or replace route for supported products. Bose may offer a repair, replacement product, or another service option rather than a battery-only repair. The outcome and price depend on the model, serial number, warranty status, country, and available service options.

Start with the relevant QuietComfort support page or the QuietComfort Ultra support page. Do not assume that Bose still services every older model, or that a battery-only replacement is available, until the support portal evaluates your product.

Can you replace a QC35 or another internal battery yourself?

Some older internal-battery models, particularly the QC35 and QC35 II, can be repaired by an experienced technician. The work generally requires opening the earcup and may require soldering. iFixit lists a third-party QC35 replacement battery; the listing showed a 600 mAh part at $29.99 on August 18, 2026 and states that installation requires soldering.

That part is not evidence of Bose endorsement, and its capacity alone does not establish compatibility. Verify the exact model and revision, voltage, dimensions, connector, wire arrangement, polarity, and protection circuitry. A generic marketplace lithium-ion pack may be unsafe or incompatible.

DIY repair is most appropriate for an experienced owner whose headphones are out of warranty and otherwise worth saving. It is a poor choice for beginners, products with swelling or leakage, unknown battery specifications, or headphones still covered by a warranty or protection plan. Opening the product may affect warranty eligibility; check the applicable terms first. Model-specific repair resources are available through iFixit’s Bose headphone repair overview.

Bose’s professional NC700 battery-removal document shows that the battery sits behind the left ear pad and involves screws, adhesive, and connected wires. It is professional battery-removal documentation, not a complete consumer repair tutorial.

Battery safety: stop if the battery is damaged

Do not open or charge headphones with a swollen, leaking, hot, punctured, crushed, or otherwise damaged battery.

  • Stop using and charging the headphones.
  • Do not press, bend, puncture, crush, or pry at the battery.
  • Keep the product away from heat and flammable materials.
  • Contact Bose, a qualified electronics-repair professional, or the appropriate local battery/e-waste service.
  • Follow local disposal laws. Never incinerate a lithium-ion battery.

Bose warns that accessing internal lithium-ion batteries can create fire and chemical-burn hazards. Its battery-removal guidance also says removed batteries must be disposed of according to applicable laws and regulations.

Is repair worth it?

Choose Bose service when you own a QC45, QuietComfort, Ultra, Ultra 2nd Gen, or NC700; lack soldering experience; need warranty support; or see any sign of battery damage. Choose a professional electronics repairer when the headphones are valuable and otherwise in excellent condition. Ask whether the part matches the exact model and revision, whether soldering is required, what repair warranty applies, how the old battery will be handled, and whether noise cancellation, microphones, Bluetooth, and charging will be tested.

Replacement may make more sense when the repair quote approaches the current cost of a functionally equivalent headset, or when the headphones also have worn cushions, hinges, headband components, microphones, or charging-port damage. Compare against the current replacement price, warranty, and expected remaining life—not only the original retail price. New ear cushions or a USB-C cable can address separate wear problems, but they will not fix a failing battery.
