A serial number, warranty card, successful online registration, or convincing appearance can support an inquiry, but none should be treated as proof on its own.
Start with the watch’s history and records
Ask the seller for the original receipt or other purchase history, warranty material, and details of servicing or replacement parts. Check whether the account, documents, and watch appear consistent. Consistency is useful supporting evidence, not a guarantee: documents can be separated from a watch, and paperwork alone does not authenticate it.

Longines states that its warranty is valid only when the certificate supplied with the watch is dated, fully and correctly completed, and stamped by an official Longines retailer. That is a condition of warranty validity; it does not establish that a card presented separately—or every component of a watch—is genuine. See Longines’ international warranty terms.
Longines’ international warranty page states a 24-month warranty for its watches and a five-year warranty for mechanical watches purchased from January 1, 2021, subject to the terms on that page. Warranty duration is not an authentication test.

Record the identifying details without opening the case
Photograph the watch and its available records before contacting Longines. Capture the dial, caseback, clasp, visible reference and serial number, and paperwork. Keep the complete serial number private when sharing images publicly; provide it directly to Longines or an authorized retailer when needed.
Compare the reference and visible configuration with Longines’ own catalog or product documentation for the relevant model and period. A mismatch or inconsistency is a reason to ask questions, not a standalone verdict. There is no universal visual checklist established here that makes a particular font, weight, sound, or movement behavior conclusive.
Do not open the case to look for a movement or internal number. Longines advises using a professional watchmaker if information inside the case is needed. Opening it yourself can also risk damage.

Use Longines’ registration and contact channels as checks, not verdicts
Longines’ account registration process uses the watch reference and warranty number to display watch and warranty information. Registration can help verify that the information is recognized in that system, but Longines does not say that successful registration alone authenticates every part of the watch. Contact Longines or an authorized retailer with the reference, warranty number, serial number, photographs, and purchase details if you need help interpreting a result.
A serial number is an identifier to discuss with the manufacturer, not proof by itself. Longines says it has preserved historical information relating to serial numbers since 1867, but that does not mean a number found online independently proves the watch or its components are genuine.
Request the right Longines document for your question
Longines offers two services that answer different questions. Its Certificate of Authenticity follows an authentication by one of its watchmakers. An Extract from the Archives provides historical information; Longines explicitly says it does not certify the authenticity of the watch or its components.

For a secondhand purchase, protect the transaction too
If you are considering a purchase, arrange an inspection or make payment conditional on a satisfactory result where feasible. Prefer a seller or platform with a clear return process, and preserve the listing, seller messages, receipt, and payment records. These precautions help manage the transaction; they do not replace Longines’ assessment.
