Circumference charts can help narrow the options, but they cannot confirm fit on their own; the watch’s shape and your wrist width matter too.
Measure your wrist where the watch will sit
- Find the position. Measure just behind the wrist bone, at the spot where you would wear the watch. Victorinox gives the same placement in its watch-sizing guide.
- Use a soft flexible tape. Wrap it snugly around your wrist without pulling it tight, and note the circumference.
- Use paper if you do not have a tape. Wrap a narrow strip around your wrist, mark where the ends overlap, then lay it flat and measure from the end to the mark with a ruler.
Keep the measurement in the unit used by the watch’s specifications or sizing guide. Circumference is useful for an initial comparison, but it does not tell you how far the watch will span across the top of your wrist.

Check the dimensions that determine fit
Lug-to-lug length and wrist width
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of the upper lug to the tip of the lower lug. Compare it with the flat width across the top of your wrist: if the lugs extend beyond the wrist’s edges, the watch may overhang. Victorinox advises that lug-to-lug should not exceed wrist width; Shinola likewise cautions against overhang and notes that lug shape affects how a case lies. These are useful fit checks, not a guarantee that every watch will feel or look right.

Case diameter
Diameter is the familiar case measurement, but it does not include the full span of the lugs. Two watches with the same diameter can sit differently because their lug lengths and shapes differ, so do not choose by diameter alone.

Thickness
A thicker case may feel more prominent on the wrist and can catch beneath a shirt cuff. Check the listed thickness and, if cuff clearance matters, test the watch with the sleeves you normally wear.
Strap or bracelet dimensions
Check the lug width, which determines the band width at the case, as well as the strap length or bracelet adjustment range. A case can suit your wrist while its band still needs a different length or adjustment.

Use size charts as a starting point, not a rule
Published circumference-to-case suggestions are broad examples, not universal standards. Shinola’s general guidance pairs a 6–7-inch circumference with 38–42 mm cases and a 7.5–8-inch circumference with 44–46 mm cases. Its guide also suggests lug distances around 75–95% of flat wrist width. These are that retailer’s rules of thumb, not independently established fit thresholds; different guides may suggest different sizes.

Use a chart to identify watches worth considering, then compare the exact model’s dimensions. Lug shape, thickness, band fit and the watch’s visual design can all affect how it wears and appears.

Compare a watch before you buy
- Record your wrist circumference at the watch position and, if possible, measure the flat width across the top of your wrist.
- Find the exact model’s case diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness, lug width and strap or bracelet adjustment details. Do not assume all versions in a collection share the same dimensions.
- Compare lug-to-lug with wrist width and consider whether the case will sit within your wrist’s edges.
- Check thickness against your comfort and cuff needs, then confirm that the band can fit your wrist.
- Try on the specific watch when possible. A try-on is the most direct way to judge its comfort and appearance.
If you cannot try it on, use the dimensions to narrow your choice, but treat the result as an estimate: the measurements and general charts cannot guarantee how a particular watch will feel on your wrist.
