Press the side button on your Apple Watch to open Control Center and see the current battery percentage. For regular checks, add the Battery complication to the watch face; for battery history, use Settings > Battery.
Use Control Center for the fastest check
To check your Apple Watch battery percentage, press the side button. Control Center opens and shows the watch’s current charge level. This is the current Apple-documented method; do not press the Digital Crown for this task.
- Press the side button on your Apple Watch.
- Find the battery percentage in Control Center.
- Tap the percentage if you want to open the larger battery indicator or access Low Power Mode.
The exact Control Center appearance can vary with your watchOS version and interface configuration, but the battery control is the item to select. Apple’s instructions are documented in its Apple Watch battery support guide.
Put the battery percentage on your watch face
If you check the charge frequently, add the Battery complication to your watch face. The percentage can then be visible at a glance without opening Control Center.

If the current face does not offer a suitable Battery complication, try another watch face.
Apple documents the Battery complication in its watchOS user guide.
Check your Apple Watch battery from your iPhone
You can monitor a connected Apple Watch from the iPhone’s Batteries widget.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the iPhone Home Screen, then tap the Add Widget button.
- Search for and select Batteries.
- Choose a widget size and tap Add Widget, then tap Done.
You can also add the Batteries widget to the iPhone Lock Screen when that Lock Screen configuration supports widgets. The watch needs to be paired and connected or otherwise discoverable by the iPhone for its battery information to appear. If the widget shows only the iPhone, or does not show the watch at all, check the connection rather than assuming the watch battery reading is unavailable.

See the percentage and charging history in Settings
For more than the current charge, open Settings > Battery on the Apple Watch. This screen can show:
- the remaining battery percentage;
- a graph of recent battery or charging history; and
- information about when the watch was last charged.
This is the better option when you are investigating unusually quick drain rather than simply deciding whether the watch needs charging. Menu wording and visual details can vary by watchOS version.
Check the battery while the watch is charging
Place the Apple Watch on its compatible magnetic charger. The charging interface displays battery information while the watch charges. If the watch is positioned in Nightstand mode—called Bedside mode in some regional Apple documentation—you can check its charge from the charging screen or charging button.

Battery percentage is not battery health
The number you see in Control Center is the current battery percentage: how much charge remains right now. It is different from battery health, which describes the battery’s maximum capacity relative to when it was new.
To check battery health, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health on the Apple Watch. A low current percentage does not prove that the battery needs replacement. Battery health is the more relevant measure when the watch seems to run down unusually quickly or does not last as long as it once did. Apple says the watch can alert you when capacity has become significantly reduced and service may need to be considered.
If your Apple Watch is running low
After checking the percentage, you can turn on Low Power Mode to reduce energy use:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if the percentage is missing
- Open the correct panel: press the side button, not the Digital Crown. Current Apple documentation identifies the side button as the Control Center control.
- Check the watch face: a Battery complication may not be available in every position or on every face. Edit the face or try a different one.
- Check the iPhone connection: the Batteries widget is intended to show connected devices. Make sure the watch is paired and connected before troubleshooting the widget.
- Use Settings as a fallback: open Settings > Battery on the watch for the current percentage and recent battery details.
Need to recharge?
If the percentage is low, look for an Apple Watch charger that matches your watch model and connector requirements. Apple’s compatible options include a magnetic charging cable and a charging dock. A charger is not needed to view the percentage; it is simply the next practical step when the reading is low. Check the current product listing and your watch model before ordering, particularly if you need fast charging or a USB-C connection.
