Choose a luxury watch by matching its movement to the way you want to use and care for it, then compare its materials, useful functions, tested performance, water-resistance guidance and fit on your wrist. There is no universally best movement or material: the right choice depends on your routine and the exact model.

Start with the movement and the routine you want

A watch’s movement affects how it is powered and what ownership involves. Quartz watches use a battery to power an electronic circuit and quartz oscillator. Mechanical watches store energy in a spring and regulate it through a gear train, escapement and balance. A mechanical watch may be wound by hand or automatically by a rotor responding to wrist movement. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry describes a standard mechanical watch as having around 130 components; its source page does not state a publication year, and complicated models contain more. Quartz

Quartz is a practical option if you prefer a battery-powered watch and less day-to-day attention. Victorinox describes quartz watches as accurate and low-maintenance, but that general characterization is not a performance guarantee for every model. Check the individual watch’s stated accuracy and battery life.

Manual-wind mechanical

A manual watch needs its spring wound by hand. Choose one if winding is an ownership ritual you want, and confirm the model’s winding instructions and power reserve so you know how often it needs attention.

Automatic mechanical

An automatic is a type of mechanical watch wound by a rotor that responds to movement. It may suit someone who wears the watch regularly and enjoys mechanical operation. If it is left unworn, check the model’s power reserve and whether it will need winding or resetting before use. Exact accuracy, service needs and power reserve vary by model.

Brand-specific figures illustrate why model details matter. Patek Philippe says its automatic movements generally have a power reserve of 38 to 48 hours, with some model exceptions, and that its quartz battery life is two to three years. Those are Patek Philippe’s stated ranges, not figures to apply to other brands. The company recommends servicing its quartz and mechanical watches every eight to ten years through an official service center or authorized retailer; this is its own guidance, not a universal service interval. Compare case, crystal and strap materials

Price reflects more than the movement. Case, crystal and bracelet or strap materials, as well as manufacturing and finishing, all affect a watch’s specification and cost. Compare what the exact model is made of rather than treating price as proof that it will suit you. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry lists steel, ceramic and precious metals among case materials, and plastic, mineral and sapphire among common crystal types. It describes sapphire as highly scratch-resistant; that does not make it a guarantee against every kind of damage. Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry: watchmaking

Check what a precious-metal description means

Gold-plated and solid precious-metal watches are not the same. The Federation notes that the price of a gold-plated watch varies with the gold’s fineness and the plating’s thickness, while a watch described as entirely precious metal is a different material proposition. Check the caseback or accompanying documents for the metal specification, rather than relying on a broad product label.

Match the bracelet or strap to wear and care

Consider how the bracelet or strap feels, how it needs to be cared for and whether it can be adjusted correctly. Patek Philippe advises correct adjustment of a metal bracelet and warns that water or excessive sunlight can cause leather to age prematurely. These are practical ownership considerations, not a universal ranking of materials for comfort or durability. Patek Philippe: services

Choose complications you will actually use

A complication is an additional function beyond displaying hours and minutes. It can make a watch more useful for a particular routine, but extra functions are not automatically better. Mechanical complications add components, so choose them for a purpose rather than dial complexity alone.

Victorinox also identifies date and day displays, tachymeters and anti-magnetic protection as watch functions. Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry: watchmaking · Victorinox: types of watches

Read certification claims by their test scope

A certification is meaningful when you know which standard was used and whether the test applies to the movement or the finished watch. It is not a blanket statement about every aspect of quality, value or ownership.

METAS describes an ISO 3159:2009 chronometer as a movement whose average daily rate deviation is between −4 and +6 seconds, tested by an accredited laboratory. Its Master Chronometer certification requires a Swiss-made watch and a movement meeting ISO chronometer criteria, then tests both movement and watch. METAS gives the finished watch’s rate criterion as 0 to +5 seconds per day. Its testing also covers accuracy under varying temperatures, positions, magnetization and used power reserve, as well as power-reserve validation and water resistance. The METAS page references requirements document METAS-N001 dated 8 September 2026. METAS: watch certification

Use the model’s water-resistance guidance

A metre rating should not be read as a direct statement of how deep you can dive with a watch. IWC cautions that testing procedures differ, so a rating in metres is not equivalent to dive depth. It also says water resistance is not permanent because seals age. IWC recommends regular testing, at least annually for its watches by an authorized IWC Official Agent; that timing and service route are IWC-specific guidance, not a rule for every brand. For the watch you are considering, consult its specific user guide and assess its rating, condition and intended activity together. Patek Philippe advises owners not to operate pushers, correctors or the crown underwater or while the watch is wet, and to rinse the watch with fresh water after exposure to salt water or chlorinated pool water. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than assuming all watches with a similar rating can be used in the same way. Patek Philippe: services

Assess fit on your own wrist

Try the actual watch on when feasible. Case proportions, how the watch sits and the bracelet’s adjustment all affect how it wears. There is no universal case-diameter formula based on wrist size established by the cited guidance, so do not rely on a single measurement rule in place of trying the watch. If it has a metal bracelet, make sure the fit is correctly adjusted; Patek Philippe notes that incorrect adjustment can contribute to premature wear. Patek Philippe: services

A practical checklist before choosing

  1. Identify the movement. Confirm whether it is quartz, manual-wind mechanical or automatic, then check the exact model’s stated accuracy, battery life, power reserve or winding needs.
  2. Verify the materials. Check the case, crystal and bracelet or strap specifications. If precious metal is claimed, establish whether it is solid material or plating.
  3. Keep only useful functions. Select complications for tasks or information you genuinely want.
  4. Check certification scope. Read the named standard and establish whether it applies to the movement or finished watch.
  5. Match water guidance to use. Read the model’s manual and account for seal condition and maintenance instructions before choosing a watch for water activities.
  6. Try and adjust the watch. Assess the real case and bracelet on your wrist and confirm the bracelet is sized correctly.
  7. Verify the exact listing. Before buying, confirm the model, seller, current price, dimensions, materials, warranty and availability from the listing and its documentation.
