1. Confirm the strap fits your watch
A strap is not compatible just because it looks the right size. First identify the watch’s lug width—the distance between the lugs where the strap attaches—and match it to the strap’s stated width. Then check the attachment type. Watches may use spring bars, screw bars, or another connection, and not every strap design works with each system. Nixon, for example, says its leather and rubber bands fit spring-bar watches, while its one-piece straps also work with screw-bar attachments. That is a product-specific compatibility example, not a rule for every brand. Consult the manual or compatibility list for your exact watch before ordering. Silicone or rubber for water and sweat
Suunto recommends silicone for swimming, snorkeling, and high-output activities. Timex likewise describes silicone as pliable, lightweight, water-resistant, and suitable for running or swimming. These are general material recommendations; they do not establish that every silicone or rubber strap is compatible with every watch or suitable for every water depth. Woven textile for breathability and outdoor versatility
Timex characterizes fabric straps as lighter and more breathable than metal or leather. Suunto describes woven polyamide as suitable for outdoor activity and wearing over a sleeve. The tradeoff is moisture management: polyamide can dry more slowly than silicone, so consider how soon you need the strap to be dry after rain, swimming, or a sweaty session. The cited descriptions are manufacturer guidance rather than independent comparative testing.
Leather for low-moisture wear
Suunto cautions that water and perspiration may change leather’s color and odor and advises limiting moisture exposure. For regular swimming or heavy workouts, choose another material; leather is better reserved for occasions when water and sweat are unlikely.

3. Consider comfort and wrist-sensor fit
A strap should be secure and comfortable, and the watch maker’s instructions take priority. If you rely on wrist heart-rate readings, Suunto warns that non-elastic polyamide can be difficult to tighten enough for accurate readings and recommends silicone as the better choice for measuring heart rate from the wrist. This is manufacturer guidance about its watches and strap materials, not a universal accuracy guarantee for every watch or wearer. 4. Clean the strap after sports use
Routine care helps remove sweat and residue. Suunto recommends washing the watch and silicone or elastomer strap after intense workouts with mild hand soap and warm water, then rinsing and drying thoroughly. For textile straps, it recommends regular washing and air drying. Check your own manufacturer’s instructions before applying these steps, since care guidance can differ by strap and watch.
