Before buying, verify the exact strap width, attachment style, and compatible-device list for your watch. Neither material is a universal winner, and a watch’s water rating does not mean every strap is suitable for water or workouts.
Choose a material for the trip’s conditions
Garmin’s care instructions distinguish nylon and fabric bands from silicone or TPU elastomer bands. They explain how to clean each, but do not establish a universal ranking for comfort, breathability, lifespan, or abrasion resistance. Use the material’s care routine and your ability to dry it as practical selection factors.

Nylon or fabric
A fabric strap may suit a trip when you can wash it and let it dry fully before wearing it again. Garmin recommends washing its nylon and fabric straps in cold water, using mild soap for stubborn dirt or stains, rinsing thoroughly, and allowing them to dry completely.

Silicone or TPU elastomer
Garmin says to rinse silicone or TPU elastomer straps with water and let them dry before wearing. That routine may be simpler when a band gets wet or muddy, provided you can rinse and dry it as the manufacturer directs.

Leather and other materials
Garmin describes its leather or suede bands as intended for casual wear and not recommended for vigorous activity. Apple’s guidance for Apple Watch bands separately cautions against water or workouts with some materials, including leather, stainless steel, FineWoven, and Hermès knit bands. These are product-specific recommendations, not universal rules for every band made from those materials.
Check that the replacement band fits your watch
There is no universal watch-band size or attachment system. Before ordering, check the watch’s exact model and the replacement band’s product details.

- Attachment style: Confirm that the band’s connection matches the watch. A matching width alone does not confirm that the attachment system will fit.
- Width: Compare the stated band width with the size specified for your watch.
- Compatible-device list: Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your precise model. Garmin notes that its ComfortFit fabric bands do not fit every Garmin watch.
- Material: Confirm what the band is made from, then follow its maker’s cleaning and use guidance.
Garmin lists distinct Quick Release and QuickFit band families, along with multiple widths. Its ComfortFit fabric bands are listed in 18, 20, 22, and 24 mm sizes. These are examples of Garmin product dimensions and families, not a universal sizing guide.
Install and adjust the band carefully
Garmin’s ComfortFit instructions describe spring-loaded quick-release pins and advise a snug but comfortable fit. These instructions apply to the listed Garmin bands; for another watch or strap, use that product’s own installation directions.

- Confirm the fit information: Check the watch model, band width, attachment style, and compatible-device information before installation.
- Follow the band’s installation instructions: For the Garmin ComfortFit bands covered by its guidance, use the spring-loaded quick-release pins as directed.
- Check the fit on your wrist: Adjust the band so it feels snug but comfortable, following the watch maker’s guidance.
Clean and dry the band after use
Garmin recommends cleaning its wearable, accessory band, and charging port a couple of times a week and after each activity. Its material-specific instructions are:
- Nylon or fabric: Wash in cold water; use mild soap for stubborn dirt or stains; rinse thoroughly; and let the strap dry completely.
- Silicone or TPU elastomer: Rinse with water and let the strap dry before wearing.
- Other bands or watches: Follow the particular watch and strap maker’s instructions, especially if the replacement band is not from Garmin.
Apple also advises keeping Apple Watch and its band clean and dry, particularly after workouts or liquid exposure. That guidance applies to Apple Watch products.

Do not use the watch’s water rating as a band rating
A watch’s water rating does not establish that every band supplied for it—or every replacement band—is appropriate for swimming, wet hikes, or workouts. Apple’s material guidance is one example: some Apple Watch band materials are not recommended for water or workouts. Check the band’s own use instructions rather than relying on the watch rating alone.
