If you need readability in dim conditions, look for luminous hands and markers. These features can make a dial easier to read, but they do not make checking a wristwatch while driving safe: wait until you are safely stopped before looking at or adjusting it.
What makes a watch dial easy to read at a glance?
Prioritize the dial itself rather than case size alone. A restrained layout leaves less visual clutter; strong contrast separates the markings from the dial; large numerals are easier to pick out; and distinct, bold hands make it clearer which time each hand indicates.

- Simple layout: Prefer clear hour markings over decorative details that compete with them.
- Contrast: Check that numerals and hands stand out clearly against the dial.
- Numerals: Large Arabic numerals are one legible option, though the actual size and clarity matter more than a label in a product description.
- Hands: Look for bold hands that are easy to distinguish from each other and from the dial.
Timex describes its Easy Reader collection as having large full Arabic numerals and bold hands in high contrast to the dial. Its stated goal for the line is a simple watch that can be read at a glance; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent driving-readability test. Timex Easy Reader collection.
Should you choose a larger watch?
Not automatically. Case size is only one consideration: a larger case does not guarantee that its dial is clearer, and fit and viewing angle vary by wearer. Seiko’s SRPG35 Field series, for example, has a 39.4 mm case and a dial the company describes as having highly legible Arabic numerals and revised dial, index and hand details intended to improve legibility. Treat those as product specifications and design claims, not proof of performance while driving. Seiko SRPG35 product page.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When comparing watches, view the actual dial from the angle at which you would normally see it on your wrist. Check whether the numerals and hands remain distinct and whether the case sits comfortably without needing repeated adjustment.
Do luminous hands and markers help in low light?
They may help when the dial is dimly lit. Check the product specifications to see whether luminous material is applied to the hands and hour markers; the word “luminous” alone does not tell you how bright or long-lasting the glow will be. Seiko says LumiBrite is applied to the hands, indexes and bezel of its HDB009, and that its numerals also have LumiBrite for low-light legibility. The page does not quantify glow duration or guarantee readability in every vehicle cabin, and regional specifications may differ. Seiko HDB009 regional product page.

Does an easy-read watch make it safe to check the time while driving?
No. A clear dial can help you read a watch, but the sources here do not establish that glancing at a wristwatch while driving is safe. NHTSA’s voluntary guidance addresses visual-manual secondary tasks through original-equipment in-vehicle devices, including eye-glance evaluation; it is not a study of wristwatch use and does not certify wristwatch glances as safe. ISO 15008:2017 covers dynamic visual information on in-vehicle transport displays, not watch design. ISO’s page says the 2017 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2025. A fourth edition was listed as a committee draft under development as of October 12, 2026; it should not be treated as a published replacement. Neither the standard nor the draft establishes a wristwatch safety threshold. ISO 15008:2017; ISO/CD 15008, Edition 4 status.

The practical choice is to avoid looking at or adjusting a wristwatch while the vehicle is moving. If you need to check the time, wait until safely stopped. If you need time information while moving, consult your vehicle manual and use a suitable integrated display only when lawful and safe. This is conservative safety advice, not a statement of the law in every jurisdiction.

- Is the layout uncluttered, with numerals or markers you can identify easily?
- For dim conditions, does the specification identify which parts have luminous material?
- Does the case fit comfortably and present the dial at a useful viewing angle?
