Case diameter alone cannot tell you whether a watch will sit comfortably: compare its lug-to-lug length with the flat width of your wrist, and consider thickness and strap dimensions too.
Measure your wrist and assess the fit
- Measure circumference: Wrap a flexible tape around your wrist where you plan to wear the watch. If you do not have a tape, wrap a paper strip around the same spot, mark where it meets, then measure the strip.
- Measure the flat wrist width if possible: Circumference is useful, but it does not show how much flat surface the watch has to span. The lug²lug sizing guide explains why wrist width and lug-to-lug length help assess fit.
- Compare case dimensions: Check the candidate watch’s lug-to-lug length against your wrist’s flat width. Lugs that extend beyond the wrist are a useful warning that the watch may feel or look too large. Also check thickness, which affects how the watch sits under a sleeve, and strap width and length, which affect comfort and security. Victorinox’s fit guide also recommends considering these dimensions.
- Try it on or plan for an online return: If you can, try the watch on and see how it sits on your actual wrist. When buying online, use the manufacturer’s dimensions and check the return policy before ordering.
Published sizing bands can help narrow a search, but they are starting points, not rules. Longines offers approximate diameter ranges by wrist circumference; those ranges cannot account for every wrist shape, case design or personal preference. There is no single ideal diameter for a 7-inch wrist—or any other circumference.
Set a realistic budget before comparing watches
Choose your spending limit before looking at models. Consider the full ownership decision, not just the listed price: a bracelet may need adjustment, and a watch may need a replacement strap, battery or service later. Those costs vary by model and location, so check them rather than assuming every affordable watch will cost the same to maintain.
Within your limit, prioritize a verified fit, the features you need for daily use, clear legibility, suitable materials and accessible warranty or service support. Compare equivalent watches, and verify the specifications for the exact model reference. Current prices and model-specific lifetime-cost comparisons are not established here, so this guide does not name a universal price ceiling or claim one movement is always cheapest to own.

Choose the movement that suits your routine
Quartz for convenience and value
Quartz is a sensible starting point if you want a practical, low-maintenance watch. Nixon’s first-watch buying guide describes quartz as typically a good value. A quartz watch runs on a battery, so factor in eventual replacement when considering upkeep.
Mechanical if you want the experience
Automatic and manual-wind watches may appeal if you specifically want a mechanical movement. They offer a different kind of ownership from quartz, so weigh that interest against your priorities for convenience and maintenance. Victorinox characterizes the distinctions this way: “Quartz offers accuracy and minimal maintenance, automatic provides craftsmanship and self-winding energy, and manual-wind offers a traditional and tactile feel.” This is the manufacturer’s description, not a comparative test of watches.

Match the style and specifications to how you will wear it
Style names provide a starting point, not a guarantee that a watch suits a particular task. Dress watches tend to emphasize a restrained look, field and pilot watches emphasize readability and practical design, while diver and sport styles are associated with active use. For any category, check the actual model’s features and manufacturer guidance.
In particular, read the exact water-resistance specification and the maker’s instructions for use. A category label or a high water-resistance marking by itself does not establish that a watch is suitable for every water activity. Victorinox’s watch-selection guide discusses style categories and the importance of considering the watch’s intended use.

Build a shortlist you can compare fairly
Once you have a spending limit and a rough fit range, compare candidate watches on the same practical criteria. A shortlist of affordable quartz watches may be a useful place to start if convenience is your priority; verify each model rather than relying on category descriptions.
- Total spend: Does the price fit your limit after likely strap or bracelet adjustment and foreseeable upkeep?
- Fit: Do the case diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness and strap dimensions suit your wrist and how you wear a watch?
- Movement: Do you prefer quartz convenience or the mechanical experience of an automatic or manual-wind movement?
- Daily use: Are the watch’s legibility, style and manufacturer-stated water resistance appropriate for your routine?
- Ownership support: Can you confirm warranty coverage, service access and availability of replacement straps or batteries for the exact model?
For each candidate, confirm the reference-level dimensions, current price and availability, water-resistance instructions, warranty and service arrangements with the manufacturer or seller. This prevents a broadly described watch category from substituting for details that determine whether a particular watch will fit and serve you.
