How to Choose an Omega Speedmaster in 2026: Sizes, Movements, and Features Explained

Choosing an Omega Speedmaster starts with size, but the reference number decides the movement, date function, material and water resistance. Here is how the 38 mm, 42 mm and Dark Side of the Moon examples compare.

Choose the size first, then the exact reference. The Speedmaster name covers several different watches. The 42 mm Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is the classic reference point, the 38 mm collection is the smaller option, and the 44.25 mm Dark Side of the Moon examples are the largest and typically ceramic. Movements, date display, and water resistance are not uniform across the family, so the reference number matters more than the family label.

Compare the three starting points

The table below uses the specific reference named in each official source. Treat each column as one example, not as a description of every watch carrying that family name. Where a source does not state a value, the cell says so.

Choice axis Moonwatch Professional, 42 mm (manual reference 310.32.42.50.04.001) Speedmaster 38 mm collection (August 2026 announcement) Dark Side of the Moon, 44.25 mm (reference 311.93.44.51.99.002 and Apollo 8 release)
Case diameter 42 mm 38 mm 44.25 mm

Date No date function listed in the manual Six models have a date; one black-dial model does not Date listed in the Calibre 9300 reference manual; not assumed for every Dark Side reference
Case material Stainless steel in the manual; the January 2026 announcement adds 18K Moonshine Gold Steel models in the 2026 collection; other materials not stated in the announcement Ceramic in the manual; the Apollo 8 model is also ceramic
Power reserve 50 hours (manual) Not stated in the August 2026 announcement 60 hours on the Calibre 9300 reference (manual); not stated for the Apollo 8 model
Water resistance 5 bar (50 m / 165 ft) (manual) Not stated in the August 2026 announcement 5 bar (50 m) on the Calibre 9300 reference (manual); not stated for the Apollo 8 model

Which size suits your decision

Size is the first filter, but a diameter number does not tell you how a watch will sit on your wrist. Omega’s official materials cited here give case diameter, not lug-to-lug length or case thickness, so check those dimensions on the exact reference before buying.

38 mm: the smaller Speedmaster collection

Omega’s August 25, 2026 announcement introduced seven new 38 mm references with a refreshed design. Raynald Aeschlimann, OMEGA President and CEO, said, “The Speedmaster 38 mm has always taken its cues from the Moonwatch, while keeping size, colour, and simplicity in mind.” This is the collection to consider if the 42 mm case feels too large for your preference, but it is a different family line rather than a scaled copy of the Moonwatch. The announcement does not supply every technical specification, so water resistance and reserve for these references need to be confirmed on the individual model.

42 mm: the Moonwatch Professional

The Moonwatch Professional is the reference point most buyers compare against. The manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 describes a stainless-steel case with a rubber bracelet, an hour and minute display, small seconds, a chronograph, and a tachymeter. That is one configuration, not a guarantee that every Moonwatch has the same strap or materials. Omega’s January 2026 black-and-white Moonwatch announcement describes two further 42 mm options, stainless steel and 18K Moonshine Gold, and states that both use Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 with ceramic tachymeter bezels and sapphire crystals. Those are Omega’s descriptions of the announced models; confirm the details in each model’s own documentation.

44.25 mm: Dark Side of the Moon

The Dark Side of the Moon examples are the largest in this comparison and are ceramic. The Calibre 9300 reference is automatic, while the Apollo 8 model released on January 16, 2024 uses manual Calibre 3869 with Co-Axial Master Chronometer certification. Two watches in the same 44.25 mm ceramic design family can therefore differ in how they wind, so the reference number determines what you are buying.

Movement and winding: what the difference means day to day

A manual movement, such as Calibre 3861 in the Moonwatch Professional, is wound by turning the crown. Owners who wind daily are in the habit anyway, and the watch does not depend on wrist motion to keep running. An automatic movement, such as Calibre 3330 in the 38 mm date models or Calibre 9300 in the Dark Side example, winds through the motion of the wearer’s wrist and can be wound by hand as well. Neither winding type is objectively better; the decision comes down to whether you want to wind the watch yourself and how often you wear it.

Movement names also change the reading of the specification sheet. The 2026 Moonwatch announcement uses the Master Chronometer designation for Calibre 3861, and the 2024 Apollo 8 release uses the same designation for Calibre 3869. Those labels describe Omega’s certification statements for the announced models; they do not replace the reserve and water-resistance figures in each manual.

Date, bezel, and case material

Date display is a reference-specific feature. The Moonwatch Professional manual does not list a date function, so buyers who want a date should check the exact 42 mm reference rather than assume it. Six of the 38 mm models have a date and one black-dial model does not. The Calibre 9300 Dark Side reference includes a date, but that does not extend to every Dark Side watch.

The 38 mm collection returns to a thicker bezel with Dot-Over-Ninety detail, which changes the visual weight of the watch compared with the earlier smaller references. The 42 mm Moonwatch can be stainless steel or, in the 2026 announcement, 18K Moonshine Gold, and some announced models use ceramic tachymeter bezels. Ceramic is the defining material of the Dark Side examples. Steel is the most common material across the families cited here, but a steel case does not imply a particular bezel, crystal, or dial. Compare the material and finish of the exact reference.

Reserve and water resistance: check the exact manual

The Moonwatch Professional manual gives a 50-hour power reserve and 5 bar (50 m / 165 ft) water resistance. The Calibre 9300 Dark Side reference lists a 60-hour reserve and 5 bar (50 m). Neither value transfers to the 38 mm collection or to the Apollo 8 model, because the August 2026 and January 2024 announcements do not state them. Water resistance is a rating for the watch as manufactured, not a promise for every condition, so use the manual for the rating that applies to your reference.

How to choose the right reference

  1. Decide the case diameter you want to consider. Use 38 mm, 42 mm, or 44.25 mm as the starting point, then check lug-to-lug length and thickness on the exact reference.
  2. Decide whether manual winding suits your routine. Choose a manual movement if you are happy to wind by hand; choose an automatic movement if you want the watch to wind through regular wear.
  3. Decide whether you need a date. Confirm the date function on the specific reference, because it varies inside the 38 mm collection and across the Dark Side family.
  4. Decide on material. Steel is the common option across the families discussed here; ceramic appears on the Dark Side examples and some Moonwatch announcements; 18K Moonshine Gold is available on the 42 mm announced option.
  5. Find the reference number and check the official manual or specification sheet for reserve, water resistance, and caliber.
  6. Confirm current availability and price with an Omega boutique or an authorized retailer, and try the watch on if possible. Prices and stock were not established in the sources used here and change by region.

Confirm the reference number before comparing any specifications. A Speedmaster label on its own is not enough to tell a 38 mm automatic date model from a 42 mm manual Moonwatch or a 44.25 mm ceramic Dark Side watch.
