Choose a smartwatch if you also want to handle phone-connected tasks—such as notifications, message replies, apps or payments—from your wrist. The categories overlap, so compare the features of the specific model rather than relying on its label.
What separates a fitness tracker from a smartwatch?
A fitness tracker is centered on activity and health information such as steps, heart rate, sleep and exercise. Its companion phone app often provides the fuller view of your data. A smartwatch more often brings phone functions to your wrist, including viewing or responding to messages, contactless payments and music playback. These are tendencies, not guarantees: some trackers have smartwatch-like functions, and some smartwatches offer extensive fitness tools. Which?’s buying guide explains the practical overlap.

Which one fits what you want to do?
Choose a fitness tracker for straightforward tracking
A tracker is a good fit if your main goals are keeping tabs on everyday activity or sleep, and you prefer a lighter, less conspicuous band over a more interactive wrist device. You may also prefer to review detailed information on your phone rather than on your wrist. Some trackers can have longer battery life, but that depends on the particular device and how it is used; the category alone does not promise a specific charging interval. Samsung UK’s comparison discusses these category-level differences and their overlap.

A smartwatch makes more sense if you want to see or respond to notifications, use apps, make payments or control music from your wrist. A larger display can make at-a-glance interaction easier, though size and features vary by model. Check that the functions you want work with your phone; some are tied to a particular platform, account or app.

For workouts, compare the actual GPS and sport features
Both device types can track workouts and offer GPS. The key question is whether a model has built-in GPS or relies on a paired phone for location tracking. Check the model’s specifications and the workout features you care about rather than assuming a smartwatch is automatically better for exercise—or that a tracker lacks useful sports tools. Tom’s Guide’s category comparison also covers workout tracking and crossover devices.

- Battery and charging: Consider how often you are willing to charge and whether charging could interrupt overnight wear. Battery life varies by device and use.

Check health features and their limits
A health-related feature is not automatically a medical diagnosis. For example, Samsung Newsroom US says its Galaxy Watch sleep-apnea feature is intended to assess risk, not provide a stand-alone diagnosis, replace traditional diagnostic methods such as polysomnography, assist clinicians in diagnosing sleep disorders or serve as an apnea monitor. Samsung also says certain Galaxy AI features require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health and a Samsung account. These qualifications apply to the Samsung features described in its article; requirements differ across products and features.

Make the choice
- Start with your main reason for buying: activity and sleep tracking, or a mix of tracking and wrist-based phone functions.
- If you mainly want tracking and prefer a simpler band, compare fitness trackers that cover your chosen metrics.
- If you want to interact with notifications or other phone functions on your wrist, compare smartwatches that support those tasks and your phone.
- If workouts are the priority, compare built-in versus phone-connected GPS and the specific exercise features on each candidate.
- Before deciding, check comfort, charging needs, phone compatibility and the availability or requirements of any feature you consider essential.
