Compare the current Apple Watch models
| Model | Best suited to | Key distinctions | Price and battery notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | Everyday notifications, workouts, and core health and safety tools on a tighter budget | 40 mm or 44 mm aluminum case; Always-On display; fast charging; sleep score, wrist-temperature sensing, sleep-apnea notifications, and optional 5G cellular. It does not include the ECG app. | Apple rates battery life at 18 hours for all-day use. Check local pricing for your chosen size and connectivity. |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | Everyday use with broader health features and a slimmer watch than Ultra | 42 mm or 46 mm; aluminum, titanium, or ceramic options; ECG and Apple’s Health Sensing System. | Apple’s 2026 US starting price is US$399. Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours in everyday use and up to 10 hours in an outdoor workout. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Long outdoor workouts, demanding GPS use, rugged use, and satellite communications | 49 mm titanium case, dual-frequency GPS, and Emergency SOS and other satellite functions. | Apple’s UK launch price starts at £749. Apple rates it for up to 25 hours in Extended Workout mode or up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode; the latter disables some alerts and metrics. No official US starting price was established in the cited materials. |
These battery figures come from Apple and use different use cases and test conditions, so they are not a like-for-like comparison. Actual Series 12 battery life varies with use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors. The Ultra 4’s 45-hour figure applies to a specific workout mode, not ordinary all-day use. Apple’s Series 12 announcement, Apple’s UK Ultra 4 announcement, and Apple’s SE 3 announcement describe the models and their stated figures.

Choose by the features you need
Pick SE 3 for everyday essentials and value
The SE 3 covers common smartwatch needs, including notifications, workouts, and several health and safety features. Its sleep score, wrist-temperature sensing, and sleep-apnea notifications make it more capable than a bare-bones fitness watch. Choose it if those tools meet your needs and ECG is not a must-have.
Pick Series 12 for broader health tools
Series 12 is the fit for buyers who specifically want ECG and Apple’s newer Health Sensing System, while still preferring a more everyday-sized watch than Ultra 4. Apple lists a US$399 starting price for Series 12 in 2026; the final cost depends on case size, material, band, and GPS or cellular configuration. Apple’s Series 12 announcement describes the model and its starting price.

Pick Ultra 4 only if its outdoor advantages matter
Ultra 4’s 49 mm titanium case, dual-frequency GPS, satellite functions, and extended workout modes are most relevant to buyers who expect to use them. Its larger case and higher price make it a poor default for someone who mainly wants notifications and routine workouts. In the UK, Apple’s 2026 launch announcement lists a starting price of £749; that figure should not be treated as a US price. Apple’s UK announcement outlines the model and price.
Set a realistic total budget
Compare the exact watch configurations available where you live. Case size, material, band, and GPS or cellular connectivity affect what you pay; a model’s starting price is not the price of every version. Do not compare Apple’s US Series 12 starting price with the UK Ultra 4 launch price as if they were directly comparable.

Retailer discounts are temporary. TechRadar reported Amazon US deal prices on October 6, 2026, of US$349.99 for Series 12 42 mm GPS and US$199.99 for SE 3 40 mm GPS. These were dated promotional prices, not regular list prices, and may no longer be available. Check the live listing before relying on a deal. TechRadar’s dated deal report records those offers.
Decide whether you need cellular
GPS is enough for many buyers who usually keep their iPhone nearby. Apple says a GPS model can record workout distance, pace, and route using its built-in GPS without relying on the iPhone. Cellular is useful if you want to make calls, send texts, receive notifications, or use supported audio when the iPhone is not nearby; it requires a compatible carrier plan, so include the plan’s recurring cost in your budget. Apple’s cellular overview explains the connectivity option.

Check fit, display, and water use
Current case sizes range from 40 mm and 44 mm on SE 3, to 42 mm and 46 mm on Series 12, and 49 mm on Ultra 4. A larger display may be easier to read, but case dimensions, weight, band fit, and comfort while sleeping matter too. If possible, try the size on your wrist before buying, especially for Ultra 4.
For water activities, Apple says Series 2 and later and SE models have a 50-meter water-resistance rating for shallow swimming; Series 10 and later can also be used for snorkeling to 6 meters. Ultra models are rated to 100 meters. These ratings are not blanket approval for scuba diving, waterskiing, or high-velocity water sports. Check Apple’s activity-specific limits before using a watch in water. Apple’s water-resistance guidance explains the ratings and limitations.

Verify iPhone compatibility before checkout
Apple’s compatibility information is inconsistent for SE 3. Its support table, updated September 17, 2026, lists Series 12 and Ultra 4 as requiring iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later, and SE 3 as requiring iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. Apple’s current store and comparison language says iOS 27 is required for all three models, while Apple’s setup article agrees with the table’s iOS 26 minimum for SE 3. Check Apple’s live setup guidance and your iPhone’s software version before buying rather than assuming the lower SE 3 requirement will apply. Apple’s compatibility table and Apple’s setup guidance provide the relevant requirements.
