Choose a fabric watch strap by checking two separate measurements: the watch’s lug width determines whether the strap attaches correctly, while your wrist circumference helps determine whether its length will fit. Then compare the strap’s attachment design, thickness, weave, care instructions and appearance with the watch and how you plan to wear it.
1. Match the strap width to the watch’s lugs
The lug width is the clear distance between the lugs where the strap attaches. Measure it in millimetres or check the specification for your exact watch reference. Mondaine explains that band width should correspond to lug width, and a NATO-style size guide likewise identifies the gap between the lugs as the measurement to use: Mondaine’s watch band guidance and NatoStrap.watch’s size guide.

If you have an old strap, do not rely on its apparent width alone: wear or distortion can make it misleading. Confirm the watch’s measurement before ordering. Common-width charts can narrow down what to look for, but a model name is not a substitute for checking the specification of your particular watch.

Width rules can depend on strap construction. Barton says its conventional quick-release bands must exactly match the watch’s lug width. For its softer NATO-style straps, Barton says there can be more tolerance with an odd lug width and recommends sizing up. That is Barton’s product-specific guidance, not a universal rule; check the strap maker’s instructions if the width is unusual or uncertain. See Barton’s FAQ.

2. Check length against your wrist
Measure your wrist where you wear the watch, then compare that circumference with the chosen strap’s stated length and fit range. Lug width answers whether the strap is suited to the watch; it does not tell you whether the strap will fit your wrist.
Length guidance varies by seller and design. For example, NatoStrap.watch lists one configuration as 250 mm long excluding the buckle, with a stated fit range of 150–210 mm. Barton lists separate standard and long options with different fit ranges. These are examples for those sellers’ products, not a standard for all fabric or NATO-style straps. Check the listing for the particular strap you intend to buy: NatoStrap.watch and Barton.

A pass-through strap may have extra length so the end can fold back through keepers. If you intend to wear a watch over a sleeve, consider whether the strap’s stated range and extra length suit that use rather than assuming a standard wrist fit will work.
3. Decide how the strap should sit under the watch
A classic one-piece pass-through NATO-style strap runs beneath the watch and both spring bars. That adds fabric under the case, which can raise the watch on your wrist compared with a strap that does not pass beneath it. Check the thickness and construction details for the specific strap, and consider clearance around the case and how elevated you want the watch to sit.

Not every fabric strap uses the same arrangement. TUDOR describes its own fabric strap design as having tunnels for the bars and an adjustable length. The description applies to TUDOR’s construction; it is not a specification for every fabric strap. Its official explanation is at TUDOR’s fabric-strap article.
4. Compare weave, hardware and appearance
Fabric straps vary in weave, texture, color and hardware. Consider how the strap’s pattern and buckle finish work with the watch case and dial, as well as with the clothes you expect to wear it with. Color and pattern are styling choices rather than measures of fit or performance.

Material descriptions should be read in context. TUDOR says its Jacquard technique produces a dense, high-thread-count weave intended to provide sturdiness and flexibility in its own straps. That is the manufacturer’s account of its technique, not an independent comparison or a guarantee about fabric straps generally. Mondaine lists textile alongside leather, vegan leather, steel and natural rubber among the materials in its own band range: TUDOR on its fabric strap and Mondaine on watch bands.
5. Fit the strap and follow its care instructions
Instructions differ by watch and strap. For the NATO-style change described in Barton’s guidance, the process is to remove the original strap, reinstall the spring bars, route the new strap under the bars and watch, then fold the excess through the keepers. A spring-bar tool can help remove a conventional strap, but Barton says a tool is not always essential for a NATO-style change. Care advice is not universal. Barton says its nylon NATO-style straps can be washed periodically like clothing, while Esprit NATO’s guidance varies by material and cautions against liquid soap, detergents, salt and softeners for its straps. Follow the care label for the strap you own, and remove it from the watch before washing if the maker instructs you to. Esprit NATO also warns that its nylon can be slightly abrasive to the case back, so consider the watch’s case-back material and finish when choosing and using a strap: Barton’s FAQ and Esprit NATO’s guidance.
Compare straps with a practical checklist
- Watch fit: Does the strap width match the measured lug width, and is its attachment compatible with the watch?
- Wrist fit: Does the maker’s stated length or wrist range suit your measured circumference?
- Construction: Is it pass-through, tunnel-style or another design, and how much material will sit beneath the case?
- Thickness and clearance: Will the strap and its hardware fit around the case as intended?
- Fabric and finish: Do the weave, color, pattern and hardware suit the watch and your intended wear?
- Care: Are you comfortable following the maker’s cleaning instructions, including any cautions about the case back?
For an online search, include the lug width you measured—for example, “20 mm nylon NATO watch strap” only if 20 mm is the correct width for your watch. Before buying, also confirm the strap’s length, attachment style and thickness, and check the seller’s return terms.
