Choose a Garmin by matching its strengths to what you’ll actually do: Forerunner 70 or 170 for straightforward running, Forerunner 570 for deeper training tools, Forerunner 970 for runners who need built-in maps and premium materials, vívoactive 6 or Venu 4 for broader daily fitness, and fēnix 8 for multisport and outdoor use. The best fit also depends on case size, display, battery needs and which extras you’ll use.
Which Garmin watch should you get?
Start with your main use, then narrow the choice by the features that matter to you. Garmin’s current lineup spans entry-level, advanced and premium running watches, as well as general-fitness and multisport options. The model with the longest feature list is not automatically the best choice: a focused running watch may be a better fit than a larger outdoor model if you mainly run and want a lighter watch.

Garmin estimates up to 13 days of battery life in smartwatch mode for the 70 and up to 10 days for the 170 models. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Forerunner 570: more training guidance
The Forerunner 570 is aimed at advanced runners who will use features such as training status and readiness, adaptive suggested workouts, Garmin Coach plans, running metrics and multi-band GPS. Garmin describes SatIQ as part of its GPS approach, and the watch includes a speaker and microphone. It comes in 42 mm and 47 mm case sizes; Garmin’s June 2026 guide estimates up to 11 days in smartwatch mode for the 47 mm model. The smaller version has a different battery estimate. Garmin’s buyer guide and 2025 launch announcement describe the feature set.
Forerunner 970: maps and premium running features
Choose the Forerunner 970 if you expect to use its built-in full-color maps, turn-by-turn directions or dynamic round-trip routing, or want its sapphire lens and titanium bezel. Garmin’s 2026 guide lists a 47 mm case and estimates up to 15 days in smartwatch mode. Garmin also identifies running tolerance, running economy and step speed loss as advanced measures; running economy and step speed loss require the separately sold HRM 600 chest strap. It is not required for ordinary watch use.

Which Garmin fits everyday fitness or outdoor use?
vívoactive 6: general health and fitness
The vívoactive 6 is a general health and fitness option with an AMOLED display, more than 80 preloaded sports apps and Garmin Coach plans. Garmin’s June 2026 guide estimates up to 11 days in smartwatch mode. It is a reasonable place to start if general activity, gym workouts and wellness features matter more than the advanced running analysis emphasized for the Forerunner 570 and 970. Garmin’s guide outlines the positioning.
Venu 4: broader everyday features
The Venu 4 combines health and fitness features with an ECG app, speaker and microphone, flashlight and Garmin Coach. It comes in two sizes; Garmin’s guide gives the 45 mm version an estimated up to 12 days of smartwatch-mode battery life. ECG availability depends on device, region and current watch and app software, and Garmin says the feature is intended for adults aged 22 and older. It is not a medical device.
fēnix 8: multisport and outdoor adventures
The fēnix 8 is a premium multisport GPS family for outdoor use. Available versions include AMOLED and solar-charging display choices, with case sizes from 43 mm through 51 mm. Features vary by variant, so check the specifications for the exact version and region. Its size and broader feature set may be more than you need if your main activity is running and you prefer a focused, lighter watch. Garmin’s buyer guide describes the family’s options.

Training depth
Decide whether you want training readiness and status, adaptive running workouts or triathlon-oriented tools, or mainly activity tracking and general fitness features. Garmin’s descriptions emphasize advanced running analysis on the Forerunner 570 and 970, while the vívoactive 6 and Venu 4 are framed more broadly around health and fitness.

Built-in maps and turn-by-turn directions distinguish the Forerunner 970 in Garmin’s announcement; the fēnix family is another line to consider when outdoor navigation and multisport use are central. AMOLED appears across the current Forerunner and Venu examples here. fēnix 8 also offers solar/MIP display options, depending on variant. Treat battery claims as specific to a model, size and mode, not as a simple ranking of entire product lines.
Fit and case size
Case size affects how a watch feels on your wrist, not just how it looks on a specification sheet. Garmin lists these options for the models covered here:

Everyday extras and regional limits
Music downloads, calls, payments, a flashlight and health features vary by model. Garmin names Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music for the Forerunner 570; music services may require a subscription. The Forerunner 170 Music also supports downloads from third-party services with a subscription. Confirm the exact service and model before buying. Garmin Pay and safety or tracking functions may depend on region, participating banks, network, phone compatibility or setup.
Recommended Free Tools
Garmin says Pulse Ox is unavailable in some countries, and some health-tracking measures are not medical devices. Check current region-specific support information and the exact product manual before relying on a feature. Product software can also change after launch; Garmin’s September 22, 2026 release is one example of updates arriving later. Garmin’s newsroom posts product and software announcements.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the final choice
- Name your main use. Pick running, daily fitness and gym use, or multisport and outdoor activity as the starting point.
- List the features you will actually use. For a runner, that might mean training guidance or maps; for everyday use, it might mean comfort, health features or music.
- Check the exact size and variant. Compare case measurements and display options for the precise model, especially within the fēnix 8 family.
- Check the live local listing and support details. Launch MSRPs and feature availability do not establish today’s transaction price or regional support. Confirm current pricing, service subscriptions, compatibility and availability before buying.
