Which Seiko Marinemaster is the better starting point for your wrist?
If you prefer a more compact case, begin by trying on the 1965 Heritage SJE117 or SJE119. Their published dimensions are 39.5 mm in diameter, 47.2 mm lug-to-lug and 12.3 mm thick. The cited 1968 Heritage options, SLA077 and HBF001, measure 42.6 mm across and 49.3 mm lug-to-lug; they are also thicker.

These figures make the 1965 pair the smaller starting point in this comparison, not a guaranteed fit for a particular wrist. Case shape, bracelet adjustment and personal preference matter. Compare lug-to-lug span and thickness as well as diameter, and try the exact reference on with its bracelet adjusted. If you already own a watch that wears comfortably, compare its footprint directly.

What is the difference between the Marinemaster 1965 and 1968?
In the cited references, the 1965 SJE117/SJE119 pair has the more compact case and a 200 m / 660 ft diver’s rating. The 1968 SLA077/HBF001 pair is larger and rated by Seiko for 300 m / 1000 ft diver’s water resistance. The 1968 references also differ from each other: SLA077 uses the 8L35 movement, with an approximately 50-hour reserve and 13.4 mm thickness; HBF001 uses the 8L45, with an approximately 72-hour reserve and 14.1 mm thickness.

The accuracy ranges Seiko lists also vary by movement: +15 to −10 seconds per day for the 6L37 and 8L35, and +10 to −5 seconds per day for the 8L45. These are published specifications, not results from comparative testing.

How should you use the water-resistance ratings?
Use the rating attached to the exact reference: Seiko describes the SJE117/SJE119 as 200 m / 660 ft diver’s watches and the SLA077/HBF001 as 300 m / 1000 ft diver’s watches. These figures are manufacturer ratings; they do not establish that a watch is suitable for every dive or replace current instructions, proper equipment or dive training. Follow Seiko’s guidance for the specific watch and the requirements of your planned activity.

Seiko’s November 16, 2023 launch announcement described the 1965 designs and their 200 m rating, and noted: “Caliber 6L37 has been adapted from the earlier Caliber 6L35 to have greater shock resistance while maintaining the slender profile that characterizes the 6L movement family.” See Seiko’s launch announcement.

Which reference should you try first?
- For a more compact footprint: Try the SJE117 or SJE119 first, then judge the 47.2 mm lug-to-lug span and 12.3 mm thickness on your wrist.
- For the larger 1968 case: Compare the SLA077 and HBF001 in person. Their diameter and lug-to-lug dimensions match, but thickness and movement differ.
- If power reserve matters: The HBF001 has the longest listed reserve of these choices, at approximately 72 hours; confirm that its thicker case works for you.
- Before buying: Verify the reference number, current local listing and specifications. “1965” and “1968” identify design families, not one fixed specification.
