To clean a ceramic watch without scratching it, start with the care instructions for your exact model. Where those instructions allow it, wipe the case and bracelet with a soft cloth or very soft brush, using only a little moisture or mild soap. Keep the watch out of water unless the manufacturer explicitly permits contact, and never use abrasives, polishing compounds, ultrasonic cleaners, or commercial jewelry cleaners without clear approval. A mark on the ceramic is often transferred metal rather than a scratch, so try gentle cleaning first.
Start with your model’s own care instructions
“Ceramic watch” does not tell you whether the whole watch can be immersed, whether its crown seals are in good condition, or whether a given cleaner is safe. Brands disagree on the details, so the manual for your specific model comes first. The table below compares the published guidance from three manufacturers as of the dates they were accessed for this article.

The practical lesson is that a method from one brand should not be transferred to another. A soap routine that CHANEL describes for its bracelets is not an instruction to wash a TAG Heuer or Swarovski watch the same way.
A step-by-step method when the manufacturer gives one
CHANEL publishes a complete method for its white, black and matte ceramic bracelets. If you own one of these, follow it in this order:

- Check that the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down before any water touches the watch.
- Dip a soft-bristle brush in soapy water and brush the bracelet gently.
- Rinse the bracelet thoroughly so no soap stays in the links.
- Dry it with a soft cloth.
- Leave the crown alone until the watch is completely dry. Moving it while damp can let moisture reach the movement.
CHANEL recommends cleaning these bracelets once a month. That schedule applies to its bracelets and is not a general rule for every ceramic watch.

If your manual does not describe cleaning in detail, a conservative routine covers most everyday dirt:

- Wipe the case, bezel and bracelet with a soft, dry microfiber or cotton cloth after exposure to dirt or sweat. Casio’s maintenance guidance for its watches similarly recommends frequent soft-cloth wipe-downs.
- For dirt in the bezel, lugs or bracelet joints, use a soft toothbrush lightly dampened with warm water, but only if your manual does not forbid moisture.
- Dry the watch immediately with a soft cloth.
- Skip soap unless your model’s instructions specifically allow it. TAG Heuer warns that soap residue can collect in joints and between links.
- Do not submerge the watch, and do not use polishing compounds, abrasive pads, or hard bristles.
Scratch or transferred residue?
Many visible lines on a ceramic watch are not scratches at all. Identifying the difference determines whether a gentle clean is enough or whether you need service.
Signs of transferred metal
CHANEL notes that softer metals, including 18K gold and titanium, can leave deposits on ceramic that look like scratches. If a line sits on the surface and looks like a smear of metal, a gentle clean with the methods above may remove it. Do not move to abrasives to test this. Scrubbing a deposit with anything harder than a soft brush risks creating real damage.

Signs of a true scratch
Rado describes its high-tech ceramic as resistant to scratching in normal everyday use, but says it can be scratched by materials as hard as or harder than the ceramic itself, including nail files, granite and sand. Its guidance also warns that the watch can break if dropped. If a line remains after careful, gentle cleaning and does not change, treat it as surface damage. The published care guidance does not describe a home procedure for removing a scratch from ceramic, so do not try one.
Water, soap and specialty cleaners
Water resistance varies by model, and a ceramic case or bracelet does not prove that a watch is safe in water. Check the water-resistance rating in your model’s documentation before any moisture touches the watch, and avoid immersion unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Ultrasonic cleaners and commercial jewelry cleaners are the riskiest options. Swarovski warns against sonic cleaners and against commercial jewelry cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol for its watches, and TAG Heuer leaves ultrasonic cleaning to official service. Use these only if a watchmaker has expressly approved them for your exact watch and the part being cleaned.

- Soft-bristle brush: CHANEL’s ceramic-bracelet instructions specifically call for one. A clean, very soft brush you already own may work equally well.
- Microfiber or soft cloth: useful for light cleaning and for drying, and recommended in TAG Heuer’s general guidance.
- Mild soap and warm water: only where your manual permits soap, and always followed by a thorough rinse or wipe to remove residue.
Avoid scratch-removal polishes, abrasive pads, and any “universal” watch-cleaning solution. None of the manufacturer guidance reviewed for this article supports those products on ceramic.

When to stop and contact service
- A mark remains after gentle cleaning, or it looks like a real scratch.
- Your model’s water-resistance rating or care instructions are unclear.
- The crown or a seal may be compromised, or moisture has got inside the watch.
- The watch has been dropped or struck.
In those cases, contact the manufacturer or an authorized watchmaker. TAG Heuer directs owners to official service for complete maintenance, including ultrasonic cleaning and a functional inspection.
