A tourbillon is worth buying if you want the mechanism itself: the moving cage, the finishing, and the watchmaking history behind it, and you accept the price and ownership obligations of a specific watch. It is not worth buying on the assumption that the cage makes a modern wristwatch more accurate. The tourbillon was devised to solve a pocket-watch problem, so any accuracy claim for a particular watch has to be supported by that watch’s own test data.
What a tourbillon does
A tourbillon places the escapement and the balance wheel inside a cage that rotates continuously. Breguet’s official tourbillon page states the principle in these words: “The principle of the tourbillon consists in placing the escapement and the balance wheel in a mobile cage.” The page does not name an individual author.
The purpose of the rotation, as Breguet describes it, is to distribute the rate variations linked to vertical position rather than letting them build up while the watch rests in one orientation. The regulating organs spend time in every position instead of staying in one.
Why it was invented, and what that history does and does not prove
The tourbillon was developed for pocket watches, whose regulating organs could remain in a fixed vertical orientation for long periods. Breguet’s historical pages date Abraham-Louis Breguet’s patent to 26 June 1801. That is the origin of the design, and it is well documented.

- This tourbillon measures 40mm in diameter and just 9.7mm in thickness, weighing a mere 67 grams. Its meticulously engineered structure and radically skeletonized tourbillon movement eliminate all superfluous metal components, allowing the mechanical artistry of the free-sprung flying tourbillon to shine in its purest form. It is an exquisite, high-end tourbillon watch that is both ultra-thin and supremely comfortable.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an Italian leather strap with hand-stitched detailing for comfortable and durable wear. We offer a three-year worldwide warranty.
The historical engineering rationale is a separate question from whether a modern wristwatch keeps better time because it has one. The manufacturer sources explain how the design works and where it came from. They do not provide independent, controlled wrist-wear comparisons showing how much accuracy a contemporary tourbillon gains over a well-regulated watch without one. A wristwatch changes position many times a day, so the cage’s purpose is still relevant in principle, but the size of any advantage is something each maker has to demonstrate with its own data for the specific model.
Why people buy one
The reasons buyers give fall into a few groups, and Breguet presents the complication in similar terms as both an answer to a precision problem and a continuing signature of its watchmaking:

- The sporty, free-sprung balance flying tourbillon watch, crafted by Swiss chief designer Etienne Ruffieux with modern architectural aesthetics, features an independently developed architectural tourbillon movement adorned with oversized ruby bearings. Its design philosophy is expressed through the interplay of light and shadow created by extreme skeletonization. This timepiece has been honored with the European International Design Award for its outstanding original design.

This free-sprung system eliminates the need for a balance spring regulator, thereby overcoming the timing inaccuracies caused by regulator displacement in conventional mechanical movements. This ensures the watch delivers enhanced precision and stability in timekeeping.
- This tourbillon features a high-tech ceramic bezel. Ceramic resists discoloration and is harder than metal, protecting the watch from scratches. Weighing half as much as stainless steel, it reduces wrist strain for enhanced comfort.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters. Featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an aerospace-grade fluororubber strap, it offers waterproof, sweat-resistant, and corrosion-resistant properties for comfortable and durable wear. Featuring Super-LumiNova Luminous hands and hour markers. We provide a 3-year worldwide warranty.
- The moving display. The cage turning on the dial side is a visible mechanical action that most watches do not offer.
- Visible construction. Owners can see the escapement and balance at work in a way that a hidden movement does not allow.
- Technical challenge. The mechanism is a difficult piece of construction, and its execution is a measure of a maker’s skill.
- Historical connection. The design traces to a specific patent and a specific precision problem.
- Specialized mechanical ownership. Some buyers value the object for its own sake, regardless of timekeeping.
These are reasons to want the watch. They are not evidence that the watch performs better than an alternative. Breguet’s framing is the maker’s own, and it should be read as such.
How to compare two tourbillon watches
When you have two or more candidates, compare them on the same axes. A tourbillon label alone does not settle any of them.

| Factor | What to request or check | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Measured performance | The specific watch’s rate results, the testing method, the test conditions, and whether the movement was regulated before testing | Whether any accuracy claim applies to that model. “Tourbillon” is not an accuracy certificate. |
| Movement and execution | Architecture, finishing, regulation approach, and the quality of technical documentation | Build quality. Breguet’s technical discussion notes that rate also depends on balance-spring characteristics and on the changing mainspring force across the power reserve, so ask how the maker addresses both. |
| Provenance | Reference number, seller identity, and the maker’s documentation for that reference | Confirms exactly which watch you are buying |
| Warranty and service | Written warranty terms, the authorized service route, and service terms from the maker or seller | Who will repair the watch and under what conditions. Service prices were not verified in the sources reviewed, so they are not stated here. |
| Wearability | Case dimensions, legibility, comfort, water resistance, and suitability for your intended use | Whether you will actually wear it. Check each model’s own documentation. |
| Total cost | Purchase price plus the service and other ownership costs you expect | Whether the price fits your budget. No general price range or resale premium is established by the sources reviewed. |
Checking the maker’s documentation first
Before you compare sellers, confirm that the maker’s own documentation covers the exact reference you are considering. If the maker publishes no rate data for that reference, you have no model-specific basis for an accuracy claim, whatever the complication is called.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A named example: Breguet Classique Tourbillon 7357
Breguet’s official page identifies the Classique Tourbillon 7357, reference 7357PT/1A/386, as a tourbillon model. That confirms the complication, not its performance, price, or availability. The sources reviewed did not establish a current price or stock position for this reference, and both change over time. Check them directly with the maker or an authorized retailer, and ask for the test documentation for this reference before you rely on any accuracy statement.

A buying sequence
- Decide whether you are buying the mechanism, the history, the finishing, or the accuracy claim. Each leads to a different choice.
- Confirm the exact reference number on the maker’s official page.
- Request the model’s rate results and test conditions in writing.
- Confirm the warranty terms and the authorized service route before purchase.
- Check the case size and legibility against your wrist and daily routine.
- Set the total cost, including expected service, against what the watch means to you.
What the available sources establish, and what they do not
The sources reviewed are strongest on the mechanism, the historical rationale, and the maker’s own description of the design. They support the statement that a tourbillon rotates the escapement and balance to distribute position-related rate variation, and that Breguet dates the patent to 26 June 1801.
They do not establish market-wide price ranges, comparative timekeeping rankings across makers, independent owner experience, typical service costs, or resale and investment outcomes. Any claim on those subjects needs separate, dated evidence. Nothing in this article reflects hands-on testing of any watch.
