Compare a gold watch case on three separate axes: purity tells you how much gold is in the alloy, durability depends on the alloy and case construction, and color reflects the other metals and any surface treatment. An 18-carat mark does not by itself mean a case is more scratch-resistant than a 14-carat one, and a yellow, white, or rose appearance does not establish purity.
What do gold purity marks mean on a watch?
Carat (often written “k” or “ct”) measures the proportion of gold in an alloy in parts out of 24. Fineness expresses that proportion in parts per thousand. A stamp such as 585 generally means 585 parts gold per 1,000, or 58.5%; it is not a weight measurement. Troy ounces, by contrast, measure precious-metal weight.

| Carat | Gold content | Common fineness mark |
|---|---|---|
| 9k | 37.5% | .375 |
| 10k | 41.7% | .417 |
| 14k | Commonly 58.5% | .585; mathematically 14/24 is .58333 |
| 18k | 75% | .750 |
| 24k | 99.9% when marked .999 | .999 or 1000 |
These common figures are listed by the World Gold Council. The difference between 14/24 (58.333…%) and the commonly used 585 mark (58.5%) is a convention in common marking, not a reason to read the two figures as identical mathematics.

How to inspect a hallmark
Look for the case-back marks and the exact model information, using a magnifier if the stamp is small. Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy explains that precious-metal marks may state purity in thousandths or karats and that magnification can help make them legible: government hallmark guidance. A visible mark is a claim to assess, not proof by itself that a case is genuine or that the mark accurately describes its current material. If a case is unmarked, worn, or disputed, seek assessment from a qualified watchmaker, jeweler, or assay service.
Does higher-carat gold make a more durable watch case?
Not necessarily. Pure 24-carat gold is too soft and scratch-sensitive for a watch case in pure form, according to watchmaker Mühle-Glashütte. Gold is combined with other metals to increase hardness and produce different shades. But carat alone does not tell you the finished alloy’s hardness: compositions vary by both carat and color, and typical recipes are not universal.

Audemars Piguet’s published material table reports 18-carat gold at 140–230 HV and 316L stainless steel at 200–350 HV on the Vickers hardness scale. The ranges provide a material-level comparison, not a guarantee of how any particular finished watch will scratch or withstand impacts. Alloy, finish, geometry, and construction all matter. The same table reports density of 15–16 g/cm³ for its 18-carat gold entry and 7.9 g/cm³ for 316L steel, so the gold material is denser; a finished watch’s weight also depends on its dimensions and other components. See Audemars Piguet’s materials explanation and table.

- Purity and alloy: Check the stated fineness and, if available, the manufacturer’s exact alloy description.
- Hardness or scratch information: Prefer a manufacturer’s material-specific data over an assumption based on carat.
- Construction: Determine whether gold alloy forms the case body or is only a surface layer or cap.
- Finish and design: They affect how wear appears, but the cited material ranges do not predict the outcome for a particular design.
Why do gold watch cases come in different colors?
Gold color comes from the alloy recipe and, in some cases, a surface treatment. The World Gold Council describes copper as producing rose gold’s pink tone; white gold uses gold alloyed with white metals such as palladium or silver. Yellow, white, and rose gold can have different proportions of added metals at the same caratage, so color and purity must be read separately.

For examples rather than universal formulas, Mühle-Glashütte describes 18-carat rose gold containing 75% fine gold, more than 20% copper, and some silver; its example of 18-carat yellow gold contains 75% fine gold with approximately equal proportions of copper and silver. The manufacturer’s guide is at Mühle-Glashütte’s materials guide.
White gold and rhodium plating
White gold is not one fixed recipe. The World Gold Council notes that white-gold alloys may use metals such as palladium or silver; nickel-containing alloys also exist, while its listed examples are nickel-free. It also says rhodium plating is usual for white gold to create a brighter shine and harder surface. That means the visible color and surface can reflect plating as well as the underlying alloy. If matching a color or checking for a metal sensitivity matters, consult the manufacturer’s composition information rather than relying on appearance alone.

How can you tell solid gold alloy from a gold cap or plated case?
Check the manufacturer’s wording and model-specific technical information to determine whether the case is gold alloy throughout or has gold as a surface layer over another material. Terms are not interchangeable, and a description for one construction should not be generalized to another.

IWC describes its gold-cap construction as designation “GC,” with a 300 μm thickness and minimum fineness of 585‰ (14 ct). Those are IWC-specific specifications, not a general standard for gold caps, rolled gold, or plated cases. See IWC’s materials technical details. For another watch, use that maker’s exact model reference and case description; a hallmark inspection alone cannot establish the construction beneath a surface layer.

A practical comparison checklist
- Read the purity claim: Note the carat or fineness stamp, such as 750 or 585, and interpret it as gold content rather than durability.
- Confirm the case construction: Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model to distinguish an alloy case body from a cap or other surface-gold construction.
- Separate alloy color from purity: Treat yellow, white, or rose as a color description; check the composition or treatment if the distinction matters.
- Use comparable hardness data cautiously: Compare only published material figures with their stated scope, not as a prediction of a specific watch’s wear.
- Get uncertain marks assessed: For an illegible, missing, or disputed hallmark or construction claim, ask a qualified professional rather than treating visual inspection as authentication.
