Compare minute repeaters by listening separately for strike pattern, pitch, clarity, resonance, rhythm and audibility—not by deciding which one is simply “best.” In person, keep the listening position and surroundings as consistent as possible. In recordings, account for capture and playback differences: without comparable conditions, a clip can show how that recording sounds, but it cannot establish which watch is louder.
First, identify what you are hearing
A minute repeater is activated on demand and indicates the time through a sequence of strikes. In a conventional arrangement, lower-pitched strikes mark the hours, a double strike on both gongs marks each quarter, and higher-pitched strikes mark the minutes. The pattern can vary by model, so confirm a watch’s strike grammar before judging how clearly it communicates the time. IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre describe minute-repeater mechanisms and their sequences.

Hammers strike gongs to make the sound. Patek Philippe describes its gongs as steel wires inside the case and notes that longer “cathedral” gongs produce longer resonance. Audemars Piguet describes variations in gong connections and soundboard design, which affect how vibration travels through the watch. These design details help explain differences you may hear; they do not establish a universal ranking of materials or models. See Patek Philippe’s explanation of repeater sound and Audemars Piguet’s overview of chiming mechanisms.

A minute repeater sounds on demand; grande and petite sonneries chime automatically according to their operating modes. Make sure a demonstration is showing the mechanism you intend to compare. What to listen for in each complete sequence
- Strike grammar: Identify the hour, quarter and minute groups. Can you tell them apart without looking at the dial? Listen to the entire sequence, not only its opening notes.
- Pitch separation: Are the hour and minute notes distinct? Does the quarter pattern sound like its own combination? Different mechanisms may arrange tones and strikes differently, so compare the pattern each watch is designed to produce.
- Clarity and attack: Notice whether individual strikes are distinct or blur together, and whether the sequence sounds even to you. That is a listening impression, not a diagnosis of a mechanical fault. Manufacturer descriptions discuss tuning, clarity and synchronization, but they are not independent tests of the watches.
- Resonance and decay: Listen to how long each sound lingers and whether successive notes overlap. Patek Philippe specifically describes longer cathedral gongs as producing longer resonance.
- Rhythm and pauses: Notice the spacing between groups and any silent interval. The indicated time determines the number and order of strikes; some mechanisms also include features intended to reduce pauses when a quarter group is absent.
- Audibility and tone: Record how easy the sequence is to hear from your position, but do not equate louder with better. Watch construction and sound transmission matter, while recording level also depends on capture and playback.
How to make an in-person comparison fairer
For each demonstration, note the model and whether the watch is worn, held or resting on a surface. Record your approximate distance, the room’s character and the amount of background noise. Keep your position and surroundings as consistent as practical, and listen to full sequences at comparable times if the demonstration allows it.
These are useful controls for a qualitative comparison, not a standardized manufacturer or laboratory protocol. A change in how the watch is supported or where you stand can change what reaches your ears, so describe the conditions rather than treating one listening impression as a universal property of the model.

How to compare recordings without overreading them
- Prefer recordings that identify the watch and state whether it was recorded on the wrist or on a surface.
- Check whether the examples appear to have been captured under comparable conditions, and match playback volume before judging perceived loudness.
- Do not treat online playback level as a measurement of the watch’s actual output.
- If the recording’s provenance or conditions are missing, limit your conclusion to what is audible in those files.
No standardized minute-repeater recording protocol or controlled cross-watch sound measurements are established by the cited manufacturer sources. A recording can support a comparison of the sound captured in that file; it cannot, without comparable capture and playback context, support a fair loudness ranking of the watches themselves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep notes that separate observation from preference
Use one row per sample and record: watch or model; mechanism or strike pattern; listening context; pitch distinction; strike clarity; resonance and decay; rhythm and pauses; perceived audibility; and confidence in the recording context. Favor descriptions such as “clearer to me at this distance” over unsupported numerical scores. Keeping these dimensions separate makes it easier to explain what you prefer without presenting taste as an objective test.
