How should you compare watch movements?
Start with the routine you want, then compare the specifications of the exact models you are considering. “Quartz,” “automatic,” and “manual-wind” describe different ways a watch keeps running; none, by itself, tells you everything about a particular watch’s precision or care needs.

| Movement | What it means in practice | What to check on the model page |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz | A quartz oscillator provides the watch’s time base. Victorinox describes quartz watches as low-maintenance, but that broad description does not establish the needs or performance of every model. | Published precision, battery life, and the maker’s battery or maintenance instructions. |
| Automatic | Self-winding, according to Victorinox’s guide. The running routine and power reserve matter if the watch is not worn regularly. | Power reserve and the model’s winding and care instructions. |
| Manual-wind | Requires a more hands-on winding routine, as Victorinox describes it. | Winding instructions and any model-specific operating guidance. |
For a concrete model-level comparison, Seiko Watch Corporation lists the SUR555 as quartz caliber 6N52, with stated precision of ±15 seconds per month and approximately three years of battery life. Longines lists up to 72 hours of power reserve for the automatic Flagship Classic L4.974.4.21.6. These are the manufacturers’ claims for those models, not a head-to-head test or universal performance figures. Seiko SUR555 specifications; Longines Flagship Classic specifications.

Do not choose by case diameter alone. Measure your wrist where the watch will sit, then compare the dimensions that shape its footprint and feel. A flexible measuring tape can help; measuring is optional, but it gives you a useful reference when trying to compare published dimensions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Record wrist circumference. Measure snugly at the spot where you intend to wear the watch.
- Compare lug-to-lug length. This is the span from one end of the lugs to the other, and it helps indicate how far the watch reaches across your wrist. Victorinox suggests keeping lug-to-lug at or below wrist width as a fit heuristic—not a universal standard.
- Check diameter and thickness. Diameter describes the case across; thickness affects how the watch sits, including under a sleeve. Consider your comfort and daily routine.
- Check strap width and length. Confirm the stated lug or strap width and whether the strap length suits your wrist instead of assuming it will fit.
Victorinox gives 38–42 mm as a broad case-diameter range that suits most wrists in its guide, but individual fit varies. Treat it as a starting checkpoint, not a rule or an ergonomic standard. If you are identifying a watch you already own, the guide also suggests checking its reference number on the case back or between the lugs. Victorinox: How to Find the Perfect Watch.
Compare the whole footprint, not one number
The published dimensions of two examples show why diameter alone can mislead. Seiko lists the SUR555 at 38.9 mm in diameter, 44.5 mm lug-to-lug, and 8.5 mm thick. Longines lists the Flagship Classic L4.974.4.21.6 at 38.50 mm in diameter, 45.30 mm lug-to-lug, and 8.20 mm thick. Both are manufacturer-published specifications; neither establishes how either watch will fit an individual wrist. Seiko SUR555 specifications; Longines Flagship Classic specifications.

What does a water-resistance rating tell you?
Use the rating together with the manufacturer’s intended-use instructions; do not read a depth-equivalent number as a promise that the watch is suitable for every activity at that depth. ISO explains that ISO 22810:2010 applies to water-resistant watches for daily use and swimming. It gives a watch marked 30 m/100 ft as an example of one that should not leak at the corresponding test depth. That is an explanation of the standard’s test context, not a recommendation to use every watch labeled “30 m” at that depth in real conditions. ISO identifies ISO 6425 as the standard for watches intended for scuba diving. ISO: ISO standard for water-resistant watches makes “huge splash”.
For the standards catalogue, ISO lists ISO 22810:2010 and ISO 6425:2018 among the relevant watch standards. Check the specific watch’s documentation for permitted use and any crown or case requirements before water exposure; do not infer a care interval or activity threshold from the rating alone. What to verify before you buy
- Movement: Does the battery, winding, or wearing routine suit you? What precision, battery life, or power reserve does the maker state for this exact model?
- Fit: Do diameter, lug-to-lug, thickness, and strap dimensions work with your wrist and how you plan to wear the watch?
- Water use: Does the model’s documentation support the activity you have in mind? Check the rating, intended use, and any crown or case instructions.
- Identification: If you are comparing a specific watch or listing, verify its reference number against the manufacturer’s product information.
