How to Complete Fitbit Sync with iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

Pair a Fitbit with an iPhone through Google Health (Fitbit), then verify the last-synced time and recent metrics. Follow the ordered troubleshooting steps if the connection fails, and treat Apple Health as a separate integration.

To sync a Fitbit with an iPhone, install Google Health (Fitbit), sign in with a Google Account, and add the device in Connections → Add device. Keep the Fitbit charged and near the iPhone, with Bluetooth and internet access enabled. After pairing, check the device’s last-synced time and recent metrics; to force a sync, pull down on Today or choose Connections → Sync.

The former Fitbit app is now Google Health (Fitbit), and the App Store listing requires iOS 16.4 or later. Start pairing inside Google Health, not from the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings. Menu labels can vary as the app changes.

What syncing a Fitbit with an iPhone means

“Syncing” can refer to distinct connections:

  • Fitbit to Google Health: Bluetooth transfers device data such as steps, heart rate, sleep, and exercise to Google Health.
  • Fitbit notifications: A separate Bluetooth feature delivers supported calls, texts, calendar alerts, and app notifications.
  • Google Health and Apple Health: A separate health-data integration; pairing a Fitbit with an iPhone does not automatically put Fitbit data in Apple Health.

Fitbit wearables generally use Bluetooth to connect to the iPhone; Wi-Fi or cellular internet lets the app update the Google Health account. Aria and Aria 2 scales use a separate Wi-Fi setup process.

Which devices this guide covers

These steps are for Fitbit trackers and watches such as Charge, Inspire, Luxe, Sense, Versa, and Fitbit Air when Google Health presents the device as available. Fitbit Ace devices have separate setup instructions. Aria and Aria 2 scales use a different, Wi-Fi-based process.

How to pair a Fitbit with an iPhone

1. Install or update Google Health

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Search for Google Health or Google Health (Fitbit).
  3. Confirm that Google is the developer, then install or update the app.

The App Store listing identifies the former Fitbit app as Google Health (Fitbit) and lists iOS 16.4 or later as a requirement.

2. Sign in with a Google Account

  1. Open Google Health and tap Sign in with Google.
  2. Choose or create a Google Account and follow the profile prompts.

Google Account sign-in is required. Fitbit-account users needed to migrate by May 19, 2026. Google says users who did not migrate could download or delete their data before deletion processing began July 15, 2026. See Google’s migration information and terms and data-deletion information if you have an account-access problem.

3. Add the Fitbit inside Google Health

  1. Open Google Health and tap Connections.
  2. Tap Add device and select your Fitbit model.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts and approve the iPhone Bluetooth pairing request.

Do not begin setup by selecting the Fitbit in iPhone Bluetooth settings. Google’s setup troubleshooting guidance says setup should start inside Google Health.

4. Check permissions

Allow Bluetooth access. For background syncing, check these iPhone settings:

  • Bluetooth: Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth; enable Google Health.
  • Background App Refresh: Settings → General → Background App Refresh; enable it globally and for Google Health.
  • Cellular Data: Settings → Cellular; enable Google Health if it should sync away from Wi-Fi.

Apple explains Bluetooth permissions, Background App Refresh, and cellular data settings. Location is not a universal requirement for ordinary syncing; location settings may be needed for features such as connected GPS.

5. Complete and verify the first sync

  1. Keep the Fitbit near the iPhone and open Google Health.
  2. Wait for the device to connect and check Today for recent metrics.
  3. Open Connections and select the Fitbit to check battery status and the last-synced time.

Opening Google Health while the Fitbit is nearby triggers a sync attempt. Automatic syncing is not necessarily continuous or real-time; the phone must be able to reach the device and the account service.

How to manually sync

Method 1: Pull down on Today

  1. Keep the Fitbit near the iPhone and open Google Health.
  2. Go to Today, touch and hold the screen, and pull down until the progress bar appears.
  3. Release and wait for the attempt to finish.

Method 2: Use Sync

  1. Open Google Health and tap Connections.
  2. Tap Sync and wait for the attempt to finish.

Google documents both methods in its syncing guidance.

Fitbit connected but not syncing: troubleshooting

Try these steps in order. Check the last-synced time before removing the device or app: Google warns that removing a Fitbit can delete data that has not synced.

  2. Wait at least 3 seconds, then turn it back on.

5. Update iOS, Google Health, and Fitbit firmware

  • Check Settings → General → Software Update for iOS updates.
  • Check the App Store for Google Health updates.
  • Install Fitbit firmware updates offered in Google Health.

App versions change, so use the latest available release. See Google’s update troubleshooting guidance.

6. Recheck permissions and power settings

Confirm that Google Health has Bluetooth, Background App Refresh, and (when needed) cellular access. Turn off Low Power Mode while testing background syncing: Apple says it turns off Background App Refresh. See Apple’s Low Power Mode guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Charge the Fitbit

Connect the Fitbit to its charger and retry. Low battery can make the connection unreliable or interrupt an update.

8. Forget and re-pair Bluetooth

  1. First check the last-synced time.
  2. Open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the information icon beside the Fitbit, and tap Forget This Device.
  3. Reopen Google Health and add the device from Connections → Add device if prompted.
  4. Approve pairing and run a manual sync.

Let Google Health initiate pairing rather than selecting the Fitbit manually from Bluetooth settings.

9. Remove unused Fitbit devices or reinstall the app only if needed

Sync first. If removing an unused device, open Connections, select it, and use System → Disconnect; then remove obsolete Bluetooth entries. Google’s documentation describes device limits differently in some places, so follow the devices Google Health actually offers. Reinstall Google Health only after checking the last-synced time, confirming the iOS requirement, and understanding that unsynced data may not be recoverable. Google’s update guidance explains when to forget the Bluetooth device before reinstalling.

Fitbit notifications are separate from data syncing

  1. Keep Bluetooth enabled and open Settings → Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the information icon beside the Fitbit and enable Share System Notifications.
  3. In Google Health, open Connections → your device → Notifications and choose the alerts you want.
  4. Confirm the iPhone allows notifications for the relevant apps; turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb while testing.

If Share System Notifications is missing, Google advises restarting the Fitbit and accepting the iPhone permission prompt if it appears again. See Google’s iPhone notification troubleshooting guide.

Can Fitbit data sync to Apple Health?

This is separate from pairing a Fitbit with an iPhone. Google’s Google Health and Apple Health help page documents reading data from Apple Health into Google Health, but says Google Health does not yet write or export data back to Apple Health. A reported rollout may make write-back available to some users, but availability is not established as universal. Check Google Health’s profile or partner-app settings for an Apple Health option and review the permissions shown. If the option is absent, do not assume Fitbit data is being exported.

Third-party transfer apps may be available, but they are not Fitbit-developed solutions. Review their privacy policies, permissions, costs, and supported categories before granting access to health data.

FAQ

Why won’t my Fitbit pair with my iPhone?

How do I force my Fitbit to sync?

Open Google Health and pull down on the Today screen, or tap Connections → Sync. Keep the Fitbit nearby and wait for the attempt to finish.

How can I tell whether my Fitbit synced?

Check that the device’s last-synced time has updated and that recent metrics appear in Google Health. A Bluetooth connected label alone does not confirm that account data synced.

Why does my Fitbit sync only when Google Health is open?

Check Background App Refresh and Google Health’s cellular access, and turn off Low Power Mode while testing. Apple says Low Power Mode turns off Background App Refresh.

Does pairing a Fitbit with an iPhone send data to Apple Health?

No. Pairing normally syncs Fitbit data to Google Health. Apple Health is a separate integration, and Google’s help page does not document universal Google Health write-back to Apple Health.
