To customize an Apple Watch face, add and configure one in the Apple Watch app’s Face Gallery, or edit the face directly on your watch. You can choose colors and styles, add complications for useful information or shortcuts, make a face from your photos, and organize or share saved faces. The exact faces and options depend on your watch model, region, and software version.
Choose the right way to customize
The Face Gallery is the easiest way to browse available faces and preview their options. Editing on the watch is useful when your iPhone is not nearby. Which route works best depends on whether you want to explore designs or make a quick change.
- Use the iPhone for browsing: The Apple Watch app’s Face Gallery lets you explore categories, preview faces, and configure the options shown for each one.
- Use the watch for a quick edit: Touch and hold the current face, tap Edit, and move through its editing screens.
Add and customize a face on iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap Face Gallery.
- Browse a category, such as Photos, Health and Fitness, or Data Rich, and choose a face.
- Adjust the available design options, such as color or style.
- For each complication position shown, select an option or turn the complication off.
- Tap Add to Watch. The face is added to your collection and becomes the current face.
Options differ by face, so you may not see the same colors, styles, or complication positions on every design.
Edit a face on Apple Watch
- With the face displayed, touch and hold the screen, then tap Edit.
- Swipe through the editing screens. If the face offers complications, swipe to the last screen.
- Select a complication position and turn the Digital Crown to browse the options available for that slot.
- Press the Digital Crown to save, then tap the face to switch to it.
Complication choices are specific to the face and position. A complication that appears for one slot may not be available in another.

Pick complications that help at a glance
Complications display information or provide shortcuts on the face. Choose them based on what you want to check or open without navigating through apps. The number, size, and placement of slots differ by face; Apple describes Modular as having six slots, but that does not make it universally available on every model. Some App Store apps also offer complications.
- Prioritize useful information: Reserve the most visible positions for the details you check often.
- Consider the layout: A face with more slots can show more at once, while a simpler layout may suit a cleaner design.
- Check each slot’s options: The choices offered depend on the selected face and position.
Put your photos on a watch face
Use the Photos face to make a personal image—or a rotating selection of images—your watch’s background. You can choose a supported source or album, or select photos individually.

- In the Apple Watch app, open Face Gallery and choose the Photos category.
- Choose a style and select a photo source: shuffle a supported source such as Featured or People, choose an album, or manually select photos.
- If selecting photos manually, choose up to 24.
- Adjust the layout options shown, then add the face to your watch.
When you shuffle a library or collection, Apple says 16 photos are automatically selected to display each day. If an expected photo is missing, check whether it is in the album synced to your watch. You can also create a Photos face from an image already on the watch: open it in the Photos app and use the action menu.
Organize faces and switch between them
You can keep several variations of a design, reorder your collection, remove faces you no longer use, and switch among saved faces. The setting under Settings > Clock controls whether swiping across the screen switches between faces.

Share a face with someone else
In the Apple Watch app, select a face in your collection or in Face Gallery and use Share. A recipient can add a face they receive in Messages, Mail, or an online link. Apple specifies that the recipient needs watchOS 7 or later. If the face uses a third-party complication, the recipient can download that app or add the face without the complication.
