The Double Split is for a buyer specifically drawn to split-seconds timing rather than a conventional chronograph alone. Original Zeitwerk: for a jumping digital display
Phillips dates the Zeitwerk’s launch to May 2009 in Berlin. Rather than presenting time with conventional hands, it uses jumping numerals, creating a visual and mechanical contrast with the Lange 1 and 1815 watches. Phillips notes that moving the numeral discs at the minute change creates a torque challenge for the gear train. That is a useful part of understanding the watch’s design; it is not evidence by itself of a durability issue or a particular service burden. The Datograph is an important comparison for anyone considering a Lange chronograph, but it debuted in 1999, just before the decade in this guide. Lange describes its original Calibre L951.1 as combining a column-wheel chronograph, flyback function, precisely jumping minute counter, and outsize date. It is therefore decade-adjacent context, not a 2000s introduction. The later Datograph Auf/Ab arrived in 2012, outside the decade; its L951.6 added a power-reserve display and a 60-hour reserve. The Datograph Perpetual is another useful complication comparison, combining chronograph and perpetual calendar. Lange specifies 556 parts in Calibre L952.1, including 223 in the calendar mechanism. Those figures describe the movement, not a complete measure of servicing difficulty or ownership cost, and the model should not be placed in the 2000s shortlist without checking the exact reference and its introduction date. What to check before buying a pre-owned example
A celebrated model name does not authenticate a watch or establish its condition. Evaluate the actual example, ideally with a qualified watch specialist familiar with Lange, and match its details to manufacturer records where possible.
- Identify the exact reference and configuration. Confirm the reference, case metal, dial, movement, and production period. Do not infer these solely from a seller’s description or family name.
- Assess fit and case condition. Check dimensions against your wrist and inspect the case for wear, damage, or polishing that may affect its shape. Look at the dial and hands for condition consistent with the watch’s stated configuration.
- Have the movement examined. A qualified specialist can assess operation and visible condition. For a complicated watch, make sure the relevant functions are checked rather than assuming that a running movement means every indication works correctly.
- Review records and provenance. Ask for service documentation, available paperwork, and a credible ownership history. Box and papers can support a purchase file, but they do not by themselves prove authenticity.
- Get an independent assessment when needed. If the seller cannot substantiate the watch’s identity or condition, pause the purchase until a qualified specialist can evaluate it.
