To get more time between charges, start by turning off the always-on display, then reduce screen wake-ups and use a lower-power GPS mode when its accuracy is sufficient. Music, continuous sensor readings, connectivity and feature-heavy watch faces can also increase battery use. Exact settings and their effects vary by model, so treat these as options to check in your watch’s manual—not universal menu instructions.
Which settings usually make the biggest difference?
The display is a good first place to look. On applicable Garmin AMOLED watches, Always On keeps a dimmed screen visible and shortens the time between charges. Garmin says it can also make the display less sharp. Turning it off for general use means the screen is no longer continuously visible, but can help extend runtime. Some models let you configure display behavior separately for everyday use and activities.

If your watch offers them, lowering brightness, shortening the screen timeout or making gesture wake less sensitive can reduce how often or how long the display is on. The exact options depend on the watch.
| Choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|
| Always On display | The screen stays glanceable, but runtime is shorter. |
| Screen off or gesture wake | Uses less display time, but you must wake the screen to read it. |

How should you choose GPS and music settings?
GPS tracking requires power. If your watch offers a choice, GPS-only may use less battery than multi-system or multi-band positioning, while the latter can provide better positioning in challenging conditions. Keep the mode that suits the route and conditions; the lower-power option is not automatically the right one for every activity or device.
Playing music from the watch adds another battery demand. If you do not need watch-based playback, turn it off for the activity or use another playback option if that works for you.
| Activity setup | What you trade |
|---|---|
| GPS-only | Potentially longer runtime than multi-system or multi-band modes; positioning may be less robust in difficult conditions. |
| Multi-system or multi-band GPS | Can improve positioning in difficult conditions, with potentially shorter runtime. |
| Music played from the watch | Convenience without relying on another playback device, at additional battery cost. |
| No watch music | Less watch-based playback, with lower power demand than playing music from the watch. |

- Watch faces, apps, widgets and data fields: Animated or feature-rich third-party options can contribute to drain. If the cause is unclear, try the default face and review whether the drain changes.
When should you use Battery Saver or an activity power mode?
Some watches offer a Battery Saver profile for everyday use or power modes for activities. These can extend estimated use time by reducing or disabling features such as the display, sensors, connectivity or music. Check what the selected mode changes on your specific watch before using it.
- Turning off wrist heart rate affects heart-rate monitoring and metrics that depend on it.
- Turning off GPS stops track, distance, pace and map recording.
- Turning off Bluetooth stops notifications and phone syncing.
On supported Garmin watches, Garmin’s Power Manager guidance explains how power modes work. Garmin also documents features affected by Battery Saver on the Venu 2 series; those effects should not be assumed for other models.

Manufacturer estimates show how configuration can affect runtime, but they are not promises for your watch. Garmin’s figures below are estimates for specific models and modes; actual use depends on settings and conditions. They are not a controlled comparison between models.

| Watch and mode | Garmin estimate |
|---|---|
| Venu 2, smartwatch mode | Up to 11 days |
| Venu 2, smartwatch mode with Always On | Up to 2 days |
| Venu 2, GPS-only | Up to 22 hours |
| Venu 2, GPS with music | Up to 8 hours |
| Forerunner 265, smartwatch mode | Up to 13 days |
| Forerunner 265, Always On mode | Up to 5 days |
| Forerunner 265, GPS-only without music | Up to 20 hours |
| Forerunner 265, all-systems/multi-band without music | Up to 14 hours |
| Forerunner 265, GPS-only with music | Up to 7 hours |
Garmin’s Venu 2 battery-life assumptions and Forerunner 265 battery-life assumptions give the manufacturers’ conditions for these figures, including display behavior and use patterns. The Venu 2S has different estimates. Use the assumptions for your exact model rather than projecting these numbers onto another watch.
What if battery drain suddenly gets worse?
If the change is sudden or unusually severe, first check for current software and restart the watch. Garmin notes that installing an update can temporarily increase battery use; it should return to normal after installation. If the problem continues, follow the manufacturer’s support or manual guidance rather than assuming the battery has failed.
There is no universal percentage saving for any single setting. Runtime depends on the display, GPS mode, music, sensors, connectivity, software, conditions and how you use the watch. For exact menu names, consult the owner’s manual for your make and model.
