The best balance depends on your case size, routes, and priorities. Garmin’s figures are “up to” estimates based on stated settings, not a promise of the runtime you will get.
Start with the display
Garmin’s published estimates show a substantial difference between always-on display and wrist gesture in smartwatch mode. For the 47 mm epix Pro (Gen 2), Garmin lists up to 6 days with the display always on and up to 16 days with wrist gesture enabled. If you value an always-visible screen, keep it and consider other adjustments; if not, wrist gesture is a straightforward setting to try.

Brightness and how often you use the screen also matter. Garmin says changes to default display settings can significantly affect battery life, and higher screen use generally means less battery life. Bright outdoor conditions can also reduce runtime because the ambient light sensor adjusts brightness. Review brightness and screen behavior alongside the display mode rather than assuming a single setting accounts for every difference. Garmin’s Power Manager guidance explains these general factors.
Check estimates for your case size
The epix Pro (Gen 2) comes in 42 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes. Garmin’s smartwatch-mode estimates differ by size, so do not apply one model’s figures to another. All figures below are Garmin Customer Support estimates; its support material assumes default software settings and configurations and does not state a publication year.

| Case size | Display always on | Wrist gesture enabled |
|---|---|---|
| 42 mm | Up to 4 days | Up to 10 days |
| 47 mm | Up to 6 days | Up to 16 days |
| 51 mm | Up to 11 days | Up to 31 days |
These are manufacturer estimates, not an independent comparison test. Garmin notes that actual battery life depends on use. Use the figures as a reference for your size and configuration, not as a diagnosis or a guarantee. Garmin Customer Support’s 47 mm battery assumptions lists the estimates and assumptions.
Choose GPS accuracy for the activity
More satellite coverage and multi-band positioning trade runtime for tracking capability. Garmin’s 47 mm estimates with wrist gesture enabled illustrate the differences:
Rank #2
- Ultimate high-performance smartwatch features a large 1.4” always-on, stunning AMOLED display and a scratch-resistant sapphire lens with a titanium bezel designed for larger wrists. Physical demensions - 51 x 51 x 15.0 mm Fits wrists with the following circumference: Silicone band: 127-210 mm
- Built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities and strobe modes gives you greater awareness while you train at night and provides convenient illumination when you need it
- New hill score feature measures your running strength and endurance during ascents and gauges your progress over time
- New endurance score feature combines training data from all your athletic pursuits to help you understand how training impacts your overall endurance

| 47 mm activity configuration | Garmin estimate |
|---|---|
| GPS only | Up to 42 hours |
| All satellite systems | Up to 32 hours |
| All satellite systems plus multi-band | Up to 20 hours |
These are Garmin “up to” estimates, not a recommendation to lower accuracy for every outing. Keep the higher-accuracy option when terrain, route conditions, or your tracking needs call for it. For a long activity where GPS-only accuracy is adequate, consider changing that activity’s satellite choice rather than changing settings for every use.
Adjust settings for a particular activity
Garmin describes activity-specific Power Modes, allowing an activity to use a selected combination of settings instead of applying one compromise to every outing. Available modes and behavior vary by model, so check the options on your watch. A Power Mode records the activity using its assigned settings.
Rank #3
- Ultimate high-performance smartwatch features a 1.2” always-on, stunning AMOLED display and a scratch-resistant sapphire lens with a steel or titanium bezel designed for smaller wrists
- Gain a more complete picture of your overall health, training and recovery with 24/7 health and wellness monitoring features such as HRV status and Pulse Ox; prioritize your rest and recovery with advanced sleep monitoring (this is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked; Pulse Ox not available in all countries)
Garmin’s examples describe Max Battery as using UltraTrac and Extended as GPS only, but those labels and choices should not be assumed to be identical across every watch configuration. Review what a mode changes before relying on it, especially if you need a particular positioning accuracy or connected feature during the activity. Garmin’s Power Manager guidance covers activity Power Modes and notes that available options can vary.
Decide whether watch music and flashlight use are worth the drain
On the 47 mm model, Garmin lists up to 10 hours for all satellite systems plus music in its wrist-gesture-enabled estimates. Music is therefore a distinct runtime tradeoff during GPS activities. Keep onboard music if it matters to your outing; if it suits you, phone playback or leaving music off the watch may reduce the watch’s workload.
Rank #4
- Ultimate high-performance smartwatch features a large 1.4” always-on, stunning AMOLED display and a scratch-resistant sapphire lens with a titanium bezel designed for larger wrists

Garmin also identifies flashlight use as a factor that can reduce battery life and suggests reducing flashlight brightness to extend it. Treat that as an optional adjustment, not a reason to give up a light you need for safety.
Use Battery Saver only after checking what it disables
Battery Saver can extend smartwatch-mode runtime: Garmin lists up to 21 days for the 47 mm model in Battery Saver watch mode with wrist gesture enabled. That estimate is not a promise, and the feature can reduce or turn off functions depending on the model and configuration.

Garmin says Battery Saver may affect display or backlight behavior, gesture, music, phone and Wi-Fi connections, wrist heart rate, Pulse Ox, and all-day activity tracking. Inspect the available Battery Saver settings on the watch and decide whether the lost functions matter to you. In particular, do not assume that heart-rate tracking, notifications, or activity tracking remain available in the configuration you select. Garmin’s general guidance does not establish that every model exposes the same options.
Use the estimates without expecting a fixed number of days
Garmin’s battery specifications assume default software settings and configurations; actual life varies with how the watch is used. Display behavior, screen activity, GPS mode, music, flashlight use, and selected power settings all contribute. Your own recent runtime is the most useful baseline for deciding whether a change helped: note your normal use, change one setting, and compare over a similar period and pattern of activities.
For a practical sequence, confirm your case size and current baseline, try wrist gesture if an always-visible screen is not essential, then review brightness and screen activity. For longer outings, consider activity-specific satellite and Power Mode choices, followed by music and flashlight use. Before enabling Battery Saver, inspect its feature tradeoffs against the functions you rely on.
