How do you find an Apple Watch if it is lost or dead?

What should you do first?
- Open Find My. On an Apple device, open Find My, tap Devices, and select the missing Apple Watch. Alternatively, use iCloud.com/find.
- Check the map. Follow directions to a displayed approximate location, but treat it as a lead, not proof the watch is still there. If the current location is unavailable, Find My may show the last known location.
- Try Play Sound if the watch is nearby. Request a sound from Find My. If the watch is offline, Apple’s iCloud guide says it plays the sound the next time it connects to Wi-Fi or cellular.
- Mark the watch as Lost. Add a phone number and message so a person who finds it can contact you when it comes online.
- Search from the last reliable clue. Retrace your route from the displayed location or last connection, then check places where you may have removed or dropped the watch.
What does the Apple Watch map tell you?
Find My may show a current location or a last known location. Apple says a last known location may be displayed for up to seven days when it cannot show the current location. After more than seven days since the device last sent a location through the Find My network, Apple says no location will be shown. The exact result depends on whether the watch sent a location before going offline.

Can you make a lost Apple Watch play a sound?
Select the watch in Find My and request Play Sound. Apple’s iCloud guide says an online device starts playing after a short delay and plays for about two minutes. If the watch is offline, the sound plays the next time it connects to Wi-Fi or cellular.
A dead battery or disconnected watch will not ring immediately. If the sound does not start, use the map and search manually; the failed request does not prove the watch is permanently gone.

Search places where the watch may have been removed or dropped, including clothing, bags, vehicles, furniture, changing areas, lockers, and charging spots. An AirTag cannot track an Apple Watch merely because both can appear in Find My; it tracks itself or an item to which it is attached.
How do you mark a lost Apple Watch as lost?

Should you erase a lost or stolen Apple Watch?
Do not erase the watch until you have finished trying to locate it. Apple’s Apple Watch guide says to locate it or play a sound before erasing; after erasure, Find My cannot locate the watch or play a sound.

If the watch appears stolen, secure your Apple Account and report the theft to local law enforcement. If you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss or another applicable plan, check its terms. Apple’s coverage page says Find My must be enabled at the time of loss and throughout the claim process; do not remove the watch from your account until a claim is approved. Coverage, fees, and claim limits vary by plan and region.

What if the Apple Watch does not appear in Find My?
Check that you are using the Apple Account associated with the watch and confirm whether Find My was enabled before it went missing. Apple says no other Apple service can find, track, or flag a watch if Find My was not enabled before the loss.
- Review your Apple Account information for changes you did not make.
- Change the Apple Account password if you suspect unauthorized access.
- Report the loss or theft to local law enforcement when appropriate.
- Retrieve the watch’s serial number for a police or insurance report if needed.
- Check applicable plan or insurance terms without assuming a claim will be approved.
Do not share your Apple Account password or passcode with someone who claims to have found the watch.
What should you do after finding the Apple Watch?
After recovering the watch, turn off Lost Mode by following the on-screen instructions or using Find My. If the watch is dead, charge it with a compatible Apple Watch charger. If it remains unusable after charging and basic restart steps, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A charger can help after the watch is recovered, but it cannot locate a missing watch.
