Start with specialist watchmaking directories, association member lists and independent-watch alliances, then verify each candidate on the maker’s own current site. These tools help you find names; they do not settle whether a brand is truly independent or whether a particular watch is available, suitable or serviceable where you live.
Where to find independent watchmakers
Search a specialist directory
IndependentWatchmaking.com lets you browse by country, complication, dial type and distinctions such as AHCI membership or awards. Its listings may include a maker’s founding date, location, estimated annual production, price range, official website, social links and history. Treat those details as leads: estimates and listings can change, and the directory is not a live inventory or specification sheet.

Browse association members and events
The Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) describes its purpose as perpetuating independent watch and clock-making and publishes member and event information. Its member directory is a useful way to discover individual makers. Membership is a discovery signal, not a universal definition of independence or a guarantee of quality. AHCI listed its 2026 Masters of Horology event in Geneva for 13–18 April 2026; those dates have passed, so check AHCI’s site for future schedules.

Use alliances and microbrand indexes
The Alliance Horlogère Artisanale (AHA) says it promotes independent watchmaking outside established structures. Its front page features examples including MING, Fleming, J.N. Shapiro, Massena LAB with Raúl Pagès, and Fears. Those are examples presented by the alliance, not an exhaustive or independently vetted ranking.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a more category-led introduction, Microbrands.co publishes guides and an index that links to brand sites. Examples on the Microbrand Index include Baltic, Unimatic, Vaer, Lorier, Halios, Zelos, AnOrdain, Nodus, Traska, Furlan Marri, Monta, Formex, Brew, Christopher Ward, Serica, Farer, Vario and Atelier Wen. The index’s descriptions are editorial summaries; check each maker’s current ownership, specifications and availability directly.
What “independent” means—and what it does not
There is no single agreed definition established by these sources. The IndependentWatchmaking.com catalogue says it considers ownership, scale and originality. Its FAQ excludes brands owned by major watch conglomerates, operations that have grown to large industrial or mass-market scale, and brands whose output is primarily homage designs. It also notes that some independently owned large houses are omitted because of scale, and that it makes exceptions where it sees substantial in-house manufacturing.

Those are the catalogue’s editorial criteria, not a universal industry standard. Its methodology says the list reflects its current understanding and invites corrections supported by sources. Ownership, scale and a directory’s classification can change. AHCI membership offers a separate association-based route to discovery, but should not be treated as a definitive test of independence.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Ownership and control: Find out who owns the business and who directs its creative work. Look for current company or maker information rather than relying solely on an older directory entry.
- Maker contribution and originality: Identify what the maker says it designs, engineers, assembles or crafts itself. Consider whether the design is distinct, rather than assuming that “independent” means every component is made in-house.
- Scale and availability: Look for stated production figures, order windows and lead times, and confirm that the specific model is currently offered. A directory listing does not establish stock or a delivery date.
- Watch details: Confirm the movement and its source, complications, case size and material, dial work and intended use on the model’s current product page.
- Price and ownership support: Check the total price delivered to your region, warranty terms, service route and how support is accessed where you live. Directories do not consistently provide these details.
If you are comparing candidates, use the same questions for each rather than treating a category label as a verdict:
| Comparison point | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Ownership and creative control | Who owns the business, and who makes its design decisions? |
| Maker involvement and originality | What work does the maker claim, and what makes the design its own? |
| Scale and availability | What production information, order window or lead time is stated, and is the model currently offered? |
| Watch characteristics | What movement, complication, case, dial and use case are specified? |
| Cost and support | What is the delivered price for your region, and how do warranty and service work there? |
A practical search sequence
- Build a shortlist: Search the specialist directory by the features or geography that matter to you, then browse AHCI members, AHA examples and category-led microbrand indexes for additional names.
- Test the independence label: Review current ownership, scale, originality and maker contribution. Treat a directory’s criteria as one useful framework, not a binding industry definition.
- Choose a specific model: On the maker’s official site, verify the specifications, price, current availability and order terms for that exact watch.
- Check ownership after the sale: Confirm the warranty, service process and support options available in your region before placing an order.
This approach keeps discovery broad while reserving purchase decisions for current, model-specific information from the maker.
