If a Pixel Watch face won’t install, first try applying it directly from the watch or use Watch faces in the Pixel Watch app and tap Use on watch. If a face or the Photos option is missing, update the supporting apps. If changes do not reach the watch, check internet access, account settings, and permissions before restarting. Use the steps below in order; a factory reset is a last resort, not a routine face-install fix.
First, identify what is failing
- The face is listed but will not apply: Try the other supported way to select it.
- The face or Photos option is missing: Check whether the required phone and watch apps are up to date.
- The phone app accepts the change but the watch does not reflect it: Check connectivity, account sign-in, and app permissions.
Apply the face from the watch or phone

If a face or the Photos option is missing
Update the apps the face depends on
For the Photos face, Google says the Pixel Watch app on the phone and Google Photos on both the phone and watch should be current. If you cannot find the Photos option, update all watch apps and check again. Use Google’s face setup guidance for the current Photos requirements.

- On the watch: Press the crown, open Play Store, go to Manage apps, and tap Update all.
- On the phone: Update the Google Pixel Watch app through Google Play. In Play Store, check Manage apps & device and Updates available.
- Check system updates: Install available phone and watch software updates, then retry the face.
Google says watch system updates typically complete in under an hour and recommends keeping the watch on its charger, at least 50% charged, and connected to Wi-Fi for the best update experience. This is guidance for system updates, not a stated prerequisite for selecting every face. Google also notes that the watch needs an internet connection for app data to update. If the phone and watch are not syncing
Check the account and permissions
- In the Pixel Watch app on your phone, open Settings > Google > Accounts.
- Add or sign in to the relevant Google account if it is missing.
- Review permissions for the relevant app on both the phone and watch.
Some apps do not support Work Profile or non-Google accounts, and some require permissions on both devices. Google lists these checks in its update and app troubleshooting guidance.
Confirm both devices can reach the internet
If the phone app shows a network error, confirm the phone has internet access and the watch is connected to Wi-Fi. Google says Pixel Watch cannot connect to Wi-Fi networks that require a web sign-in page, such as some hotel or coffee-shop networks, or to 5 GHz networks. Try a supported network instead. Restart and retry before considering a reset
When the watch will not update
- Hold the crown and side button together for 20 seconds, then wait for the watch to reboot fully.
- On the watch, open Connectivity settings and turn Bluetooth off.
- Turn Wi-Fi on.
- Open Settings > System > System updates and check again.
This is Google’s recommended sequence for a watch that will not update; it is more appropriate to update trouble than to a face-selection issue by itself. Follow the steps in Google’s update troubleshooting instructions.
When pairing freezes
Hold the crown for 3 seconds, choose Restart, and wait until the watch has fully started. Bring the phone and watch together and retry pairing. For Fast Pair, Google says the phone must be within 0.5 m (1.6 ft); Bluetooth, location, and Wi-Fi or mobile network should be on. See Google’s Pixel Watch pairing troubleshooting steps.
Keep a factory reset as a last resort
A reset erases the watch’s apps, settings, and data. Google places it after earlier troubleshooting for broader pairing or setup problems, not as a guaranteed fix for a face that will not install. If you need to reset for a persistent setup fault, be ready to authenticate with the most recent PIN or Google Account when reconnecting.
