Don’t force or pry a stuck watch bezel. First check the exact model’s manual and confirm whether the bezel is meant to turn one way or both. If manufacturer-approved gentle cleaning does not help—or the bezel has lost its clicks, turns in an unintended direction, or feels newly loose—have the watch inspected by the brand or a qualified watchmaker. Bezel mechanisms and safe removal methods vary by model.
Check how your bezel is supposed to work
Before treating resistance as a fault, identify the watch’s brand and model and check its manual or manufacturer care guidance. Rotating bezels can be bidirectional or unidirectional. Many dive watches are designed to turn only counter-clockwise; that restriction is intentional, not a defect.

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry explains the safety logic: if a unidirectional bezel is accidentally moved, the indicated remaining dive time decreases rather than increases. TUDOR likewise says its diving-watch bezel turns counter-clockwise only. Check your specific model rather than assuming every bezel should turn both ways. Troubleshoot without disassembling the watch
- Identify the watch and bezel. Find the model information and consult its manual or official care instructions. If the bezel is an electronic control rather than a mechanical ring, follow the device’s guidance instead.
- Check the intended direction. Confirm whether the model is bidirectional or one-way before judging its movement. A one-way dive bezel should not be forced clockwise.
- Clear only visible surface debris if permitted. Use the cleaning method recommended by the manufacturer. Stop if the bezel remains stuck or stiff; generic advice does not establish that solvents, lubricant, or a particular tool is safe for every watch.
- Arrange an inspection if the problem persists. Seek the brand’s service or a qualified watchmaker if the bezel remains stiff, no longer clicks, turns in a direction the model should prevent, or feels newly loose.
Do not use force or metal tools to lever the bezel up. A generic online removal procedure may not match your watch and can damage or dislodge small parts.

Why removing the bezel is not a universal DIY fix
Bezel retention and click mechanisms differ. A tutorial distinguishes snap-fit and friction-fit constructions, while Citizen’s technical instructions for its 8203 mechanism describe a particular clamp-and-spring arrangement. Citizen warns that turning the bezel during removal of the specified mechanism can deform its spring, and that the bezel and spring may fall and be lost. Some friction-fit designs may call for a compatible removal tool, but a tool that fits one construction may be wrong for another. Do not remove the bezel based on a generic tutorial alone.

Choosing where to get help
- Brand-authorized service: A good choice when model-specific parts, service terms, or water-resistance checks matter. Confirm the service route for your exact watch.
- Qualified independent watchmaker: Can inspect a mechanical problem; ask whether they have experience with the model and can address any water-resistance implications of the work.
- DIY disassembly: Consider only if the manufacturer provides instructions for the exact model and you have the compatible tools and experience. Small springs and retaining parts can be damaged or lost.
Service cost, turnaround time, warranty coverage, and whether a particular repair affects water resistance depend on the watch and provider; the cited guidance does not establish universal terms. If the watch is used for diving, do not rely on a bezel that is malfunctioning to track elapsed time.
