1. Check when the drain started and what changed
Note whether the battery change followed a recent update, a shift to more cellular use, weak signal, long audio playback, or outdoor workouts. If the drain began just after an update, Apple recommends waiting a few days before checking again because update-related tasks may continue in the background. This is a general recommendation, not a guarantee that the battery will recover.

2. Check Battery Health
On the watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and inspect Maximum Capacity. Apple defines this as the battery’s capacity relative to when it was new. Rechargeable batteries have limited lifespans, so age and use can affect runtime.

3. Try reversible power-saving changes
Use Low Power Mode
Press the side button to open Control Center, tap the battery percentage, and turn on Low Power Mode. It turns off or reduces the frequency of some features. Apple says it turns off automatically when the watch charges above 80 percent. Because features may be limited or less frequent, treat this as a power-saving option and test, not a guaranteed repair.

Turn off Always On
To keep other functions while testing display use, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On and turn it off. Compare battery behavior over a similar period, rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.

Keep the watch near its paired iPhone when practical. When the iPhone is away, Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks. A strong signal also matters: weak or unavailable coverage can increase power use. Airplane Mode can help where there is no useful coverage, but it limits connectivity.
Reduce readings during supported outdoor workouts
On Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 8 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later, with watchOS 9.1 or later, you can enable Settings > Workout > Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings. Apple says this feature works when Low Power Mode is active and you begin an outdoor walking, running, or hiking workout in Workout. Less frequent readings trade some measurement detail and responsiveness for power savings.

Use Bluetooth headphones for long audio sessions
Apple says built-in-speaker audio on newer Apple Watch models can drain the battery more quickly. For longer listening sessions, Bluetooth headphones such as AirPods are Apple’s more efficient option.
4. Check for an update offered for your devices
Apple says updating watchOS might fix an issue. Available releases depend on the watch model and paired iPhone, so check the software-update screen rather than assuming a particular version is available.

5. Contact Apple if the problem persists
Contact Apple Support if Battery Health says service is needed, replacement seems necessary, or the drain remains abnormal after checking update timing and trying relevant power-saving steps. Apple can advise you on service for your watch; the cause cannot be determined from the watchOS version alone.

How long should I wait after updating before checking battery life?
