If the cellular icon is white, your plan may be working: Apple Watch uses a nearby iPhone or Wi-Fi before switching to cellular. To test it, leave the iPhone behind, move away from Wi-Fi, then check whether the watch connects. If activation fails or the watch still has no service, follow the checks below in order—starting with the plan and carrier rather than erasing the watch.
Identify what is failing
| What you see | What it usually points to |
|---|---|
| Cellular is missing from the Watch app | The watch may be GPS-only, or the carrier, account, or Family Setup configuration may not be eligible. |
| Cellular is listed, but setup fails | Check carrier eligibility and eSIM provisioning, then software, carrier settings, and the activation flow. |
| White cellular button | Apple says the plan can be active while the watch is using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi instead of cellular. |
| Green cellular button, but calls or data fail | The watch has a cellular connection; coverage, account provisioning, roaming, or the specific app may still be the issue. |
| Gray or crossed-out icon, “No Service,” “Searching,” or SOS | The watch does not have a usable cellular connection at that moment. Check location, coverage, and carrier registration. |
| Works only near the iPhone | It may be relying on the iPhone rather than cellular; use the independent test below. |
| Calls work, but SMS or app notifications do not | Some messages and notifications depend on the paired iPhone being on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular. |
Apple Watch normally favors the nearby iPhone, then compatible Wi-Fi, then cellular. The icon color alone is not a reliable test of whether cellular service is broken. Apple’s cellular setup and status guidance explains the icon states and connection behavior.
Test cellular without the iPhone or Wi-Fi
- Leave the paired iPhone behind, or temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- Move away from Wi-Fi. A hotel, gym, or workplace network may require a login or profile the watch cannot use.
- On the watch, press the side button to open Control Center. Check the cellular icon and signal bars.
- If the icon is green, try a call and a network-dependent app such as Maps or Weather. If the watch has no signal, test outdoors or somewhere you know your carrier has coverage.
A white icon means the plan may be active while Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is carrying the connection; green indicates an active cellular connection. Weak bars can cause intermittent service, particularly indoors, in basements, elevators, rural areas, or congested places. Apple’s Wi-Fi compatibility guidance notes that public networks requiring logins, subscriptions, or profiles are not supported by Apple Watch.
Confirm the watch and plan are eligible
- Check the model: GPS-only Apple Watch models cannot connect to cellular. On the paired iPhone, open Watch > My Watch > General > About and check Model Name. The watch itself must be a GPS + Cellular model.
- Check the carrier and account: A cellular-capable watch still needs a supported service plan. For ordinary personal setup, Apple generally requires the iPhone and watch to use the same carrier. Prepaid, corporate, enterprise, and some older accounts may not qualify.
- Check the country and configuration: Use Apple’s country-specific carrier list, then confirm that your exact plan supports Apple Watch. Carrier listing does not guarantee every plan, model, region, or Family Setup feature is eligible.
- For Family Setup: This is an exception to the ordinary same-carrier arrangement. Check that the carrier supports Apple Watch For Your Kids/Family Setup specifically; not all features or roaming options are available.
Apple’s setup requirements also say the watch should normally be set up within the carrier’s network. If you bought it used, recently changed carriers, or are setting it up through Family Setup, tell the carrier those details when checking eligibility.

Check the plan in the Watch app
- On the paired iPhone, open Watch.
- Tap My Watch > Cellular.
- Check whether a plan is listed. If none appears, tap Set Up Cellular and follow the carrier’s activation steps.
If you recently changed carriers and the old plan remains listed, remove it from Watch > My Watch > Cellular, then add the new carrier’s plan. Do not cancel an old plan until the carrier confirms how the transfer should work; cancellation and transfer procedures vary. The phone number displayed for the watch may differ from the iPhone’s number, but Apple says it is generally used for carrier billing or tracking—the iPhone and watch share the same number for normal use.
Try the low-risk fixes in order
1. Refresh Airplane Mode on both devices
- Turn on Airplane Mode on the Apple Watch and the iPhone.
- Wait 15 seconds.
- Turn Airplane Mode off on both and give the watch time to register.
- Repeat the independent cellular test.
Apple specifically recommends this 15-second step when cellular setup fails. See Apple’s setup troubleshooting steps.
2. Close and reopen the Watch app
On the iPhone, close the Watch app completely, reopen it, then try My Watch > Cellular again. This is worth trying if the carrier sign-in page is blank or stuck, setup remains incomplete after carrier confirmation, or a transferred watch still shows an old plan. Apple includes closing and reopening the app in its setup troubleshooting guidance.

If activation or eSIM setup still fails
The carrier controls the subscription, account eligibility, billing, coverage, and eSIM provisioning. Contact it before attempting an erase, especially if the setup page errors, the watch plan is missing or suspended, or the problem began after a carrier or device change.
Ask the carrier to verify each of these items:
- The watch’s IMEI and EID are attached to the correct account.
- The watch line is active, the account is current, and no billing or fraud control is blocking it.
- The plan supports Apple Watch cellular and the specific watch model and region.
- The carrier’s number-sharing feature is provisioned and the watch’s eSIM activation profile downloaded successfully.
- The watch is not still associated with a previous owner, watch, or carrier plan.
- There is no local outage or network maintenance affecting registration.
Carrier feature names differ: Verizon calls its system Number Share; AT&T uses NumberSync; T-Mobile offers a wearable or smartwatch line. Ask the carrier to check the applicable feature and account eligibility, not just whether the iPhone itself has service. AT&T’s wearable terms, for example, describe plan and phone-line eligibility restrictions.
After changing carrier, iPhone, or watch
An old cellular plan can remain associated with the previous watch or account. Remove the old watch’s plan, or unpair/erase the old watch and select the option to remove the plan, then pair the new watch and choose Set Up Cellular. Use a carrier transfer option if it appears. If it does not, or activation loops, ask the carrier to transfer or reprovision the watch line. Apple documents plan removal and transfer steps.

If the watch says “No Service,” “Searching,” or SOS
- Move to a known-coverage location, preferably outdoors, and check the signal bars.
- Leave the iPhone behind and disconnect from Wi-Fi so you are testing cellular rather than another connection.
- Check the carrier’s outage status, then retry a call or data-dependent app.
- If the watch cannot register in multiple known-coverage locations, ask the carrier to verify its line, eSIM, IMEI/EID, and local network status.
If the account and network are confirmed correct but the watch still cannot detect or retain service, contact Apple. Physical damage, liquid exposure, overheating, abnormal battery behavior, or a failed hardware diagnostic also warrant Apple Support. Apple’s No Service and SOS guidance covers related iPhone checks; the carrier remains the first stop for watch-line provisioning and coverage.

Low Power Mode can delay network activity
Apple says that when the iPhone is not nearby, Low Power Mode turns off Wi-Fi and cellular data until you open an app that needs a network connection. Incoming calls may go to voicemail and outgoing calls may take longer. For a clean test, open the watch’s Settings > Battery, temporarily turn off Low Power Mode, move away from the iPhone and Wi-Fi, then open Maps, Weather, or another network-dependent app. This can explain delayed or apparently inactive service, but not a failed activation or an unprovisioned account. See Apple’s guidance on using Apple Watch away from iPhone.
Some messages and notifications still depend on the iPhone
For SMS, MMS, and third-party app push notifications on a cellular watch, Apple says the paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, though it need not be nearby. You must also be signed in to iMessage on the iPhone to use Messages on the watch. A cellular call or data-dependent app is a better standalone test than waiting for notifications.

Family Setup and business or prepaid accounts
Do not troubleshoot a Family Setup watch as if it were an ordinary watch paired to the wearer’s iPhone. Its carrier may differ from the organizer’s, and carrier support and available features vary. Apple also says cellular watches configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids do not support international roaming. For prepaid, business, enterprise, or family-managed accounts, ask the carrier directly whether that account type and the specific Family Setup arrangement are eligible.
International travel and roaming
Domestic cellular service does not automatically include watch roaming. Apple says roaming is available, subject to carrier support, on cellular Apple Watch Series 5 and later, Apple Watch SE and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later with watchOS 9.1 or later. Series 4 does not support data roaming. Before travel, confirm Apple Watch roaming, VoLTE, destination coverage, and charges with your carrier. If required by the carrier, turn on Settings > Cellular > Data Roaming on the watch. Family Setup watches do not support international roaming. Details are in Apple’s roaming guidance.
Apple Watch cellular models are regional: Apple says there is no single model that supports all cellular bands worldwide. A watch bought in another country may not work with a carrier at your destination even if both support Apple Watch. Check the exact model and carrier compatibility in Apple’s cellular availability list before assuming the plan is at fault.
Who to contact—and what not to reset yet
| Contact the carrier first | Contact Apple when |
|---|---|
| Activation fails; the plan is missing or suspended; carrier sign-in errors; number sharing is not provisioned; the watch was transferred or replaced; the account type may be excluded; or there is no service despite setup. | The carrier confirms the plan, account, eSIM, and network registration are correct, but the watch still cannot connect across known-coverage locations, repeatedly loses a properly provisioned profile, or shows signs of hardware damage or failure. |
Do not erase the watch as an opening move. Erasing can remove settings and require cellular reactivation, while a carrier provisioning fault will remain. Resetting iPhone network settings also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and VPN-related settings and is not Apple’s first-line fix for watch cellular. First confirm the plan and carrier registration, then ask support whether a reset is appropriate for your specific case.
Cellular uses more battery when active for extended periods, and not every app behaves the same way away from the iPhone. If the carrier cannot support the plan or region, compare compatible service only after confirming that incompatibility—not a stale eSIM, account block, or coverage problem—is the cause.
