If Siri stopped responding after you installed watchOS 26.4, start by checking the watch’s internet connection and Siri settings, then test it with the Digital Crown. Apple’s published watchOS 26.4 notes do not identify a general Siri outage, and Apple lists watchOS 26.6 as a later release as of August 18, 2026. The steps below help separate activation, connectivity, audio, language, and pairing problems before you consider resetting the watch.
First, identify what Siri is doing
The symptom points to the next useful test. Try a basic request such as “What time is it?” or “Set a timer for one minute,” rather than starting with a command that depends on a particular app or account.

1. Check the watch’s internet connection
Apple says Apple Watch must be connected to the internet to use Siri. Depending on the model and situation, the connection can come through Wi-Fi, cellular service, or the paired iPhone. Cellular data charges may apply. See Apple’s Siri guide for Apple Watch.
- Open Control Center and check the watch’s connection indicators.
- If it normally relies on the paired iPhone, move close to the phone and wait for the connection to return.
- Try a simple request. A visible cellular signal alone does not confirm that data is working.
- If cellular requests fail, connect to Wi-Fi and test again. If Wi-Fi is already connected but Siri times out, toggle Wi-Fi off and on, then restart both devices.
Captive portals, enterprise networks, VPNs, and other restricted networks can interfere with access to online services. If possible, test on a different Wi-Fi network.

2. Make sure Siri is enabled on both devices
On Apple Watch
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Siri.
- Check the listening options and enable at least one: Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri” where available, Raise to Speak, or Press Digital Crown.
Labels and wake-phrase availability can vary by language and region. Apple documents these activation methods in its Apple Watch Siri guide.
On the paired iPhone
Open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri; the menu name varies by iOS version and region. Enable the available listening option, such as Listen for “Hey Siri”, Listen for, or Siri. Apple’s Siri troubleshooting steps use both menu labels.
3. Test Siri with the Digital Crown
Press and hold the Digital Crown until the listening indicator appears, then speak. This bypasses the wake phrase and Raise to Speak, so it helps narrow down a voice-activation problem.
- If the Crown works: focus on listening settings, language, voice recognition, microphone positioning, and Raise to Speak.
- If the Crown does not work either: check connectivity and Siri settings, then restart both devices before investigating pairing or hardware.
- If Siri listens but misunderstands you: verify the language and test the microphone using dictation or Voice Memos.
4. Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone
Restart the watch normally, turn it back on, and allow it to reconnect. Then restart the paired iPhone and wait for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity to return. Test Siri again with the Digital Crown. Apple includes restarting the watch in its official troubleshooting procedure; restarting the iPhone is also useful when the watch relies on it for connectivity or Siri processing.

Use a force restart only if the watch is frozen or will not shut down normally. Do not force-restart while watchOS is updating.
5. Toggle Siri off and on from the iPhone
If Siri is enabled but still will not respond, reset its listening setup on the paired phone:
- Open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn the listening option off, then turn it back on.
- Complete voice-recognition setup if iOS asks you to do so.
- Test Siri on the iPhone, then test it on the watch.
6. Fix Siri when it answers silently
If the watch displays a response but does not speak, check settings and audio routing before assuming the speaker is damaged.
Review Siri Responses
- On the watch, open Settings > Siri > Siri Responses.
- Review Always On, Control With Silent Mode, and Headphones Only.
- If Headphones Only is selected, Siri may speak through connected headphones rather than the watch speaker.
Also check Silent Mode and watch volume. Disconnect Bluetooth headphones temporarily to see whether the response returns to the built-in speaker. Apple describes these response options in its Siri guide.

Let Siri Voice finish downloading
Apple says the Siri voice may need to download on Apple Watch Series 3 or later. Connect the watch to Wi-Fi, place it on its charger, and check Settings > Siri > Siri Voice for download status. If it has not finished, leave the watch charging; Apple says an overnight charge may be needed. See Apple’s guidance for Siri voice downloads.
Check the speaker and audio route
Remove any case that may cover an opening. Check whether audio plays from the built-in speaker and whether Siri captions or text appear when spoken output is missing. Recent water exposure can also affect audio; avoid inserting anything into the openings or spraying liquid into them.
7. Check Siri’s language and availability
On iPhone, open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Language, depending on the menu shown. On the watch, open Settings > Siri > Language. Set both devices to the same supported language. If a selected voice is unavailable or stuck downloading, choose another available voice temporarily and leave the watch on Wi-Fi and its charger.
Siri, “Hey Siri,” Raise to Speak, and spoken responses do not have identical availability in every region or language. Check Apple’s watchOS feature availability list before treating a missing option as a fault.

8. Update beyond watchOS 26.4
Apple’s watchOS 26.4 notes list eight new emoji, AirPods Max 2 support, a Workout app icon change, bug fixes, and security updates; they do not describe a broad Siri malfunction. Apple’s security bulletin includes Siri-related security fixes, which are not evidence of a user-facing Siri outage. As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists watchOS 26.6 as a later 26.x release. Check Apple’s watchOS 26 update notes for the current release information and install the latest version offered for your watch.
- On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > General > Software Update.
- Download and install the available update, keeping the watch on its charger and the iPhone nearby.
Apple lists watchOS 26 compatibility as Apple Watch SE 2 or later, Series 6 or later, and Ultra or later, paired with iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later running iOS 26. See Apple’s update and compatibility guidance. A watch on beta software may behave differently from the public release.
If the update will not install
- Confirm the watch is charging properly, then restart the watch and paired iPhone and retry.
- If the update remains stuck, open Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > Storage, delete the downloaded update file, and try again.
Updating is a sensible compatibility and bug-fix step, not a guaranteed Siri repair; a settings, network, language, voice-download, or hardware issue can persist.
9. Test the microphone and speaker outside Siri
Remove the case temporarily and check for visible debris around the microphone and speaker openings. Clean only with Apple-safe methods; do not insert sharp objects or spray liquid into the openings.

- Use dictation or Voice Memos to test microphone input.
- Make a phone call and check whether the other person can hear you.
- Play audio through the built-in speaker, with Bluetooth headphones disconnected.
- If dictation, recordings, and calls all fail, suspect a microphone, permission, or broader system issue rather than Siri alone.
- If Siri hears you but calls, alarms, timers, and media are also silent or distorted, investigate the speaker or audio system.
Apple also recommends checking whether a case or other obstruction blocks the microphone or speaker in its Apple Watch Siri troubleshooting guide.
10. Unpair and re-pair only as a last software step
Consider unpairing only after the network, settings, restart, language, voice-download, audio, and update checks. It is most relevant when other synchronization features are also failing or the watch repeatedly loses its iPhone connection. A fresh pairing can help identify a corrupted pairing state, but it is not a guaranteed Siri fix.
- Back up the iPhone and keep the watch and phone together during the process.
- Have the Apple Account password available in case setup or Activation Lock prompts for it.
- Expect setup to take time and potentially require restoring the watch from backup.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support or arrange service if the microphone fails in dictation, Voice Memos, and calls; the speaker fails across Siri and other audio; the watch has liquid or physical damage; or Siri fails across Wi-Fi and cellular with both voice and Crown activation after updating and re-pairing. Repeated system errors or an update that cannot complete are also reasons to seek help.
Before contacting support, note the watch model and watchOS version, iPhone model and iOS version, whether the watch is GPS or cellular, the exact Siri error, which activation methods you tried, and whether dictation, calls, Voice Memos, and playback work. Mention if the issue began immediately after installing 26.4. Do not rely on Siri as your only way to place an emergency call; use Emergency SOS controls or another available phone if needed.
