It is presented as the first GMT in Seiko’s Craftsmanship urushi-lacquer context, adding a practical 24-hour dual-time hand to a watch whose main distinction is Japanese lacquer work.
What the SPB447J1 is
The SPB447J1 belongs to Seiko Presage’s Craftsmanship Series, which showcases traditional Japanese skills in mechanical watches. Its principal display is conventional hours, minutes and seconds, while a dedicated 24-hour hand tracks a second time zone. The result is a dress-leaning travel watch rather than a tool-style GMT.
Urushi lacquer dial: what makes it different
The black dial is made by repeatedly applying and polishing urushi lacquer to build a deep, glossy surface. Seiko identifies lacquer artist Isshu Tamura as the supervising craftsperson. Because each dial is worked by hand, Seiko cautions that examples can show slight differences in color and minute distortions. Those variations are expected characteristics of the process, not automatically manufacturing defects, so buyers should not expect every SPB447 to have an absolutely identical dial.
6R54 movement and GMT operation
Inside is Seiko’s 6R54, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. It has 24 jewels, a stop-second function for setting the time precisely, and a stated accuracy specification of +25 to −15 seconds per day. That is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent performance test or a guarantee of the rate an individual watch will achieve.

The movement stores approximately 72 hours of power, or about three days, when fully wound. The 24-hour hand provides the dual-time indication: set it to a second time zone and read that zone against the watch’s 24-hour scale. No independent test establishes travel-GMT behavior or a separately adjustable local-hour hand, so the SPB447 should be understood as a dual-time mechanical GMT with Seiko’s stated 6R54 configuration.

At 40.2 mm across and 48.0 mm from lug to lug, the watch sits in a moderate modern size. Its 12.4 mm thickness gives the movement and domed crystal some presence without making the case exceptionally large. The 10-bar water-resistance rating is suitable for everyday exposure and swimming-level use when the watch is correctly maintained, but it is not a claim that the watch is a professional dive instrument.

Strap and 20 mm replacement compatibility
The supplied band is cow leather and closes with a three-fold clasp with push-button release. The official lug width is 20 mm, so a conventional 20 mm strap is the starting point for replacements. Fit still depends on more than width: curved spring bars, the space between the lugs and case, strap thickness, and the clasp’s attachment geometry can all affect compatibility. Measure the original hardware and confirm the replacement strap’s spring-bar and clasp arrangement before ordering.

Who should consider it
- Urushi and Japanese craft enthusiasts: the hand-built lacquer surface is the reason to choose this Presage over a conventional dial.
- Travelers who want mechanical dual time: the 24-hour hand adds a second-zone display while retaining a traditional analog layout.
- Owners who prefer moderate dimensions: the 40.2 mm case and 48.0 mm lug-to-lug span avoid the oversized proportions common in some GMT watches.
It is less compelling for someone seeking independently verified accuracy, a separately adjustable local-hour hand, or a rugged instrument-style case. Seiko’s +25/−15-second daily figure should be treated as the operating specification rather than a chronometer-level promise.

What to check before buying
- Confirm that the reference is SPB447J1 and that the seller is authorized in your region.
- Inspect the urushi dial under good light, remembering that slight color variation and tiny distortions are part of the handmade process.
- Verify the current local price, taxes, return policy and warranty coverage.
- If changing the strap, confirm 20 mm lug compatibility, spring-bar clearance and clasp geometry.
- Set the 24-hour hand to the intended second time zone and allow the movement’s approximately 72-hour reserve to run down only after it has been fully wound and synchronized.
