If your Galaxy Watch runs Wear OS, Google Play Store should already be built in. Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS models can install compatible apps directly from the watch, from an Android phone, or remotely from a computer. Tizen-based watches—including the original Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch3, Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Watch Active2—cannot gain Google Play through a normal download or APK installation.
First, check whether your Galaxy Watch supports Google Play
The operating system matters more than the word “Galaxy” on the case. Samsung switched its newer watches to Wear OS with the Galaxy Watch4 family. Wear OS 2 and later support Google Play apps, while older Tizen watches use Samsung’s Galaxy Store ecosystem instead.
You can usually check the model in Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → About watch, or in the watch’s settings under About watch. Galaxy Wearable manages pairing and watch settings; it is not a replacement for the Play Store.

Samsung identifies the Galaxy Watch8 platform as Wear OS 6-based in its corporate materials, and its product page lists compatible Galaxy smartphones running Android 12 or later. Samsung’s general support pages may not immediately list every newest model, so confirm the software and model shown on your particular watch. How to open Google Play on the watch
On a supported Galaxy Watch, you do not download Google Play separately. Open the built-in app:
- Wake the watch.
- Press the Power/Home button or swipe up to open the apps screen. The gesture and button behavior can vary by One UI Watch version.
- Tap Play Store.
- Search using the magnifying glass, microphone or keyboard, or browse the available categories.
- Select an app and tap Install.
The watch needs internet access through Wi-Fi, an active LTE connection or the paired phone. Bluetooth models normally rely on the paired phone when Wi-Fi is unavailable. LTE can provide a direct connection when supported by the watch, carrier and plan, but it does not make incompatible apps installable.
Install a watch app from your Android phone
Many Wear OS apps can be installed from the phone’s Google Play Store. The labels vary between Play Store versions, but the process is generally:
- Open Google Play Store on the phone.
- Search for the app.
- Open its listing and look for Available on more devices, a device selector or a down arrow beside the install control.
- Select your Galaxy Watch.
- Tap Install and approve any prompts.
You can also browse Play Store categories such as Watch apps and Watch faces. On the watch, a section such as Apps on your phone may show phone apps that also offer a Wear OS version. These categories and labels can vary by country, account and Play Store release. Google’s instructions are available in its Wear OS app-installation guide.

Install a watch app from a computer
Google also supports remote installation from the web:
- Open the Google Play Wear OS section on a computer.
- Search or browse for an app.
- Select Install or the price.
- Under Choose a device, select the Galaxy Watch.
- Complete the installation or purchase.
The watch must be associated with the relevant Google Account, and the app must have a Wear OS-compatible version. If the watch does not appear in the device picker, the app may not support Wear OS, may be unavailable in your country, or the watch may not be correctly connected to that Google Account.
What you need before installing apps
- A Galaxy Watch model running Wear OS.
- A compatible Android phone for initial setup on most models.
- The current Galaxy Wearable app and required watch plug-ins.
- Google Mobile Services on the phone.
- A Google Account signed in on the relevant devices.
- Wi-Fi, LTE or an internet connection through the paired phone.
- Enough watch battery and storage space.
- An app that is available in your country and supports your watch.
Phone requirements differ by watch generation, region and carrier. Do not treat Samsung’s older broad Android requirements as universal for every current model. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 product page specifies Android 12 or later for compatible Galaxy smartphones. Check the requirements for your exact model before pairing.
What if Google Play is missing?
If your watch is a Tizen model
There is no supported Play Store installation for a Tizen Galaxy Watch. Downloading a Play Store APK does not convert Tizen into Wear OS, and Samsung’s Tizen app-distribution guidance does not provide a normal upgrade path to the newer Wear OS platform.

You can continue using the watch’s supported Samsung app ecosystem. If Google Play apps are essential, the practical solution is replacing the Tizen watch with a Wear OS model.
If your watch is a Wear OS model
Work through these checks in order:
- Finish the watch setup and Google Account steps in Galaxy Wearable.
- Confirm the watch has Wi-Fi, LTE service or a working connection through the phone.
- Open the full watch apps screen rather than searching only inside Galaxy Wearable.
- Restart both the watch and the phone.
- Update the watch software, Galaxy Wearable and Google Play services.
- Check that the same, correct Google Account is active on the phone and watch.
- Free storage space if the watch is nearly full.
- If the watch software exposes app controls, clear the Play Store’s cache or data.
- Only after recording account and backup details, consider removing and re-adding the Google Account.
- As a last resort, back up what you can and reset and re-pair the watch.
Clearing data, removing an account and resetting the watch can require sign-in, app reinstallation and configuration again. Menu names differ by Wear OS and One UI Watch version, so do not assume every model exposes the same recovery controls.
Why a phone app may not install on the watch
A phone app being present in Google Play does not mean it has a watch application. Google explicitly notes that not all Android phone apps work on Wear OS. Common reasons include:
- The developer has not published a Wear OS version.
- The app supports a different Wear OS version or hardware profile.
- The app depends on a screen layout, architecture, sensor or input method unavailable on the watch.
- The app is restricted in your country.
- The watch is associated with a different Google Account.
- The app requires a phone companion.
- The watch version has been temporarily removed or delisted.

- Standalone app: designed to run on the watch without requiring a phone companion for its core experience.
- Companion app: paired with a phone app and may require the phone for setup, data or some features.
- Notification-only integration: the phone app can send notifications to the watch without offering an installable watch app.
Android’s documentation explains the distinction between standalone and companion Wear OS apps. If the Galaxy Watch is absent from the install selector, that is usually a compatibility, account or availability signal—not proof that Play Store itself is broken.

Do not confuse limited general Wear OS documentation with Samsung’s model-specific setup requirements. Samsung states that Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 cannot be set up with an iPhone, and newer Samsung Wear OS watches are not normal iOS-compatible accessories.
An iPhone may be mentioned in general Wear OS guidance for limited Play Store situations, such as a watch that already has a supported configuration and Wi-Fi access. That does not make a Galaxy Watch4-or-newer compatible with iPhone setup. For current Samsung Wear OS watches, plan on using a compatible Android phone.
Should you sideload Google Play?
Usually, no. Sideloading an APK is not the same as installing the official Google Play platform. A phone APK may be incompatible with the watch, require unavailable Google Play services, use unsupported permissions or layouts, or be part of a split package that cannot be installed as one file.

Random APK sites also create malware, privacy and account-security risks. An unsupported installation can stop working after a watch software update. Do not use an APK to try to turn a Tizen watch into a Wear OS watch. The supported route is the Play Store already included with Wear OS.
When should you keep the watch or replace it?
Keep it if the watch runs Wear OS and Play Store is merely hidden, unconfigured, offline or associated with the wrong account.
Keep a Tizen watch if Samsung’s existing ecosystem provides the features you need and Google Play apps are not essential.
Replace it if you own a Tizen watch and need Wear OS applications. Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch Ultra and the Wear OS-based Watch8 families use the platform that provides the built-in Play Store. Buying an LTE version is not necessary solely for Google Play; Wi-Fi and a paired phone are sufficient for many installations.
