An Audemars Piguet (AP) reference identifies a model and its configuration; it does not, by itself, identify or authenticate one particular watch. To establish an individual watch’s identity, distinguish its reference from the separate numbers engraved on its case and movement, then have those markings compared with AP’s production records when certainty matters.
What an AP reference number identifies
The model reference points to a design and configuration, such as a Royal Oak in a particular material and finish. Each individual watch also has a case number and a movement number. AP says these are recorded in production registers and can be compared with its archives to support identification, dating, and authenticity assessment. Its Heritage team summarizes the distinction: “Each Audemars Piguet watch bears two engraved numbers: one on its movement, the other on its case.” AP’s numbering history explains the system.
So a reference can help answer “Which model or configuration is this supposed to be?” It cannot establish that the watch in front of you is genuine, that its parts are original, or that its individual numbers correspond to an AP record.
How to read an AP model reference
Start with the complete string
Use the full reference exactly as it appears in reliable paperwork or on AP’s official model materials. Do not rely on a shortened root number: suffixes and other characters may distinguish configuration details.

For certain historical references, AP describes a structure with a root reference—often four or five figures—followed by letters or codes for details such as case material and decoration. Its examples include 15202ST, a steel Royal Oak with standard decoration, and 15180BC, a white-gold Jules Audemars with standard decoration. The examples also involve codes for details such as bracelet or strap and dial. This is a guide to the cited historical system, not a universal decoder for every AP generation.
Modern references may use a different format
Current official product pages can show a longer, dotted alphanumeric string. For example, AP’s US product page lists the Royal Oak reference as 15400OR.OO.1220OR.01.A. Treat it as the model reference shown for that product; the page does not establish a universal character-by-character interpretation for all references.

Where to find the numbers—and what not to confuse
- Model/reference: Identifies a model or configuration. Check documentation and AP’s official model information for the complete string.
- Case number: An individual number associated with the watch’s case.
- Movement number: An individual number engraved on the movement.
Case and movement engravings are not necessarily both visible to an owner. AP notes that some historical numbers may be inside the case and visible only to a watchmaker. Do not open the watch to look for them; use available documentation or a qualified AP service channel.
Royal Oak “small numbers” are a separate convention
Some vintage Royal Oaks have a customer-facing “small number.” On the Model 5402, this used lettered A, B, C, and D series. It is distinct from the hidden case and movement numbers, so it should not be treated as a substitute for either or as proof of authenticity.

AP’s Heritage account documents 1,937 A-series, 845 B-series, 952 C-series, and 404 D-series 5402ST watches produced between 1972 and 1993. These are counts of the documented series, not a rule that a number on an individual watch proves its rarity, edition size, or genuineness. AP also describes changes and exceptions in its wider numbering practice: it dropped the letter from the broader small-number system in 1976, while the Royal Oak small number disappeared during the 2010s. Numbering changed over time
Do not assume that every era follows one numbering format. AP says its broader movement and case numbering system underwent a major overhaul in 2017, when it adopted randomly assigned alphanumeric numbers. Earlier number series also had their own history: AP’s account estimates that by 1970 it had issued approximately 115,000 movement numbers and 60,000 “big case numbers.” Those are historical approximations, not current totals. It records the case-number series passing 100,000 in 1975 and restarting at B1; the B series reached B99999 around 1986.

Can a reference number prove an AP watch is authentic?
No. A reference match is useful for narrowing down the claimed model and configuration, but it does not authenticate the specific watch. A genuine-looking reference, resemblance to an official model, or a match to an online listing cannot establish that the case and movement belong together or that AP’s records support the watch’s identity.
For a stronger identification, compare the full reference and its era-specific format with the expected case material, configuration, movement or calibre, and documented case details. The individual check is whether the case and movement numbers align with AP’s production records. AP describes using its archives to compare engravings and assess authenticity; if the markings are missing, conflict, or matter to a purchase or insurance decision, contact Audemars Piguet Heritage or an official AP service channel.

Use AP’s Heritage archive as a starting point
AP Chronicles is AP’s official Heritage catalogue, with model sheets and historical material published as research progresses. It can help with documented Royal Oak mechanical models, but it is not presented as a complete public decoding chart for every AP reference and variation. Archive comparison is the appropriate route when a reference alone cannot resolve the identity.
