To judge whether a small rectangular watch will fit, measure two things: your wrist’s circumference, and the flat width across the top of your wrist where the case will sit. For a rectangular case, the flat width and the case’s length or lug-to-lug span are the comparison that matters. A round-watch diameter chart does not answer that question.
Why a round-watch chart misleads for rectangular cases
A round watch is described by one number, its diameter, and that number roughly tells you how much of the wrist it covers in every direction. A rectangular watch is described by two or three numbers: length, width, and often lug-to-lug span, which is the distance from the tip of the top lug to the tip of the bottom lug. Rectangular cases are usually listed as length × width, so a single diameter figure cannot describe the footprint. The practical result is that a rectangular watch can look proportionate on a wrist that a same-sized round watch would overwhelm, or the reverse, depending on which dimension runs along the wrist.
Step 1: Measure wrist circumference
- Take a soft tape measure and wrap it around your wrist just above the wrist bone, where a watch would normally sit.
- Keep the tape comfortably against the skin. Do not pull it tight, because a snug tape reads smaller than the wrist actually is and leads to a watch that feels tight in wear.
- Read the figure in millimetres and write it down. TAG Heuer Japan’s Size Guide recommends recording millimetres for this measurement.
If you do not have a soft tape, use a strip of paper. Wrap it around the same spot, mark where the ends overlap, then lay the strip flat against a ruler and read the length to the mark. The result is the same circumference. A soft tape is convenient to keep on hand, but paper and a ruler are fully adequate for this step.
Step 2: Measure flat wrist width
Circumference describes the wrist all the way around. The rectangular case mostly lies across the top of the wrist, so you also need the flat width at the spot where the watch will rest.

- Position your wrist as you would when wearing the watch, with the palm facing down and the forearm resting on a table.
- Measure horizontally across the top of the wrist at the point where the case will sit. Garmin Malaysia’s Watch Size Selection Guide asks for this horizontal width taken 2.5 cm (25 mm) above the wrist bone when entering a wrist width in its preview tool.
- Record the width in millimetres.
Two wrists with the same circumference can have noticeably different flat widths, because wrist shape varies from person to person. That is why circumference alone is not enough for a rectangular case.
Step 3: Find the case dimensions of the exact reference
Sizing depends on the specific watch, not the family or the category. Before comparing numbers, look up the case dimensions published for the exact reference you are considering. Check for:

- Case length, measured along the wrist
- Case width, measured across the wrist
- Lug-to-lug, if the manufacturer lists it, which is often the more useful figure for a rectangular case
- Case thickness, which affects profile and whether the watch slides under a shirt cuff
If a manufacturer lists only a length and width without lug-to-lug, note that the lug-to-lug span is not established by those figures and may be shorter or longer depending on how the lugs are shaped. Some sources publish the figure directly; others, such as lug²lug’s Watch Size Guide (last updated July 1, 2026), explain how to read diameter, lug-to-lug and thickness together.
Step 4: Compare lug-to-lug with flat wrist width
The main fit screen is this comparison: lug-to-lug should not exceed your flat wrist width. TAG Heuer Japan’s Size Guide gives this rule for its watches. If the lugs run past the edges of the wrist, the watch will look oversized and may overhang the wrist bone at the sides.

Use the screen as a first filter, not a final verdict. The shape of the case, whether the case is curved to follow the wrist, where the strap attaches, and personal preference all change how a watch wears. Two watches with identical lug-to-lug figures can sit differently on the same wrist.
A worked example
Suppose your flat wrist width measures 52 mm at the point where the watch would sit. A reference listed at 44 mm lug-to-lug passes the screen with 8 mm to spare. A reference listed at 56 mm lug-to-lug fails it, because the lugs would extend 4 mm beyond the flat top of the wrist. These numbers are an illustration of the method, not measurements of any particular watch or person.

Step 5: Check thickness and strap separately
Passing the width screen does not settle the question of thickness. A thin case can fit a narrow wrist and still look bulky if the lugs and bezel are tall, while a thick case may wear comfortably if its footprint is modest. Judge thickness on its own, against the look you want and the sleeves you wear most often.
Strap fit is a separate consideration as well. Strap width and length affect how the case sits, and the circumference you recorded in Step 1 helps you choose a strap length. Watch Station International publishes printable fit guides, including a rectangular-case version. These let you compare a printed outline against your wrist. The print must be produced at 100 percent scale, with no “fit to page” setting, or the outline will not match the real dimensions.

- They do not establish how a specific case curves, which can make a watch feel smaller or larger than its footprint suggests.
- They do not account for how the watch will sit on your wrist once you move, or for the height of the crystal above the skin.
- Printable guides depend on accurate scaling, and no guarantee of current availability or print accuracy was established for every version.
- No general population figure for wrist size is stated here. Your own measurements are the reliable reference.
Quick checklist before you buy
- Circumference recorded in millimetres from just above the wrist bone
- Flat width recorded across the top of the wrist at the case position
- Published length or lug-to-lug and width for the exact reference, not a family average
- Lug-to-lug at or below your flat wrist width
- Thickness judged separately, and the strap length matched to your circumference
