The right case size comes from comparing a specific watch’s dimensions with your own wrist, not from wrist circumference alone. Start by measuring your wrist, use a circumference-based range as a first filter, then check the case diameter, lug-to-lug length, and thickness against your wrist’s width. A paper preview or a try-on in person confirms the result.
Measure your wrist
Take two measurements. Circumference tells you where a watch will sit and gives you a starting range. Wrist width tells you whether the lugs will fit within the flat top of your wrist. Many shoppers only take the first, which is why sizing charts often disappoint.
Measuring circumference
- Use a soft tape measure, or cut a strip of paper and mark its overlap with a pen.
- Wrap it snugly around your wrist at the spot where the watch will sit, just below the wrist bone.
- If you used paper, lay it flat and measure the marked length against a ruler, in centimetres or millimetres.
- Record the figure. Repeat once to confirm it, because a loose tape reads small.
Measuring wrist width
Garmin’s regional sizing guide for the Philippines describes measuring the wrist horizontally at 2.5 cm above the wrist bone, as shown by a dashed line in its illustration. The guide’s wording is: “Measure the width horizontally at 2.5 cm above the wrist bone.” It is a different measurement from circumference. Garmin’s guide also says: “Use a credit card to measure your wrist,” which works as a rough no-ruler check when you do not have a tape. Treat the card as an approximation, since it gives you a sense of scale rather than a precise width.
Use circumference as a starting range
Kensington Watches publishes the ranges below as a starting reference. The company states that these are not prescriptions and that intentionally oversized styles are a legitimate choice. They are not an industry standard, and no independent or standards-body threshold was identified for this topic.
#1 Best Overall
- Convenient to use.
- Small size, lightweight and portable.
- You can quickly measure the size of the strap and the size of the watch buckle.
- High quality stainless steel material, durable in use, rustproof and anti-corrosion.
- The drawing ruler is smooth and not easy to break to ensure long time convenient usage.
| Wrist circumference (Kensington guide) | Suggested case diameter | Approximate maximum lug-to-lug |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 cm | 32–36 mm | About 44 mm |
| 15–16 cm | 34–38 mm | About 47 mm |
| 16–17 cm | 38–41 mm | About 50 mm |
| 17–18 cm | 40–43 mm | About 52 mm |
| Over 18 cm | 42–46 mm | About 55 mm |
Read the table as a range to test against, not a single answer. Two people with the same circumference can prefer different diameters, and the bands are coarse. Use the number to shortlist watches, then judge each one by the dimensions below.
Check the case diameter correctly
Case size is measured across the case, perpendicular to the lugs, without the crown. Esslinger’s printable sizing guide puts it this way: “Case size is measured as the diameter perpendicular to the watch lugs, not including the crown.” Manufacturers and sellers sometimes list the crown in their headline figure, so confirm the method on the product page before comparing two watches.

Check lug-to-lug against your wrist
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of the upper lug to the tip of the lower lug. It matters more than many buyers expect. If the lugs extend past the edges of the wrist, the watch can overhang and sit awkwardly, even when the diameter looks moderate.
- Long, straight lugs are the most likely to overhang. Compare the lug-to-lug figure with your wrist’s flat top width before you buy.
- Short or curved lugs can let a larger diameter wear more compactly, because the case hugs the wrist.
- Circumference does not reveal wrist shape. A flat, wide wrist and a rounder, narrower one with the same circumference will not fit the same watch in the same way.
Consider thickness and cuff clearance
Thickness changes how large a watch looks and whether it catches a shirt cuff. Kensington gives 7–10 mm as typical for dress watches and 13–16 mm for dive watches. It also notes that a case thicker than about 12 mm may snag on a cuff. These are that retailer’s examples, not category rules. Case design and personal preference still decide the outcome.

Preview the size before you commit
A paper guide shows you how a case looks at real scale. Esslinger says to print the guide without page scaling, cut out the size you are considering, and hold it against your wrist. Watch Station gives similar advice: print, cut out, and compare with your wrist. Garmin offers an interactive online preview that lets you compare case sizes against your entered wrist width.
A paper or screen preview shows scale and proportion. It cannot show weight, how a bracelet drapes, or how comfortable the watch feels over a full day. A try-on in a shop, or a return policy you can rely on, is the real test.

- Shaped in an oval following the aspect ratio of the human wrist, it provides a more accurate measurement for wrist accessories such as oval bangles and watches.
- Made from sturdy PLA plastic. Stepped design provides quick and accurate measurement vs conical designs. DOES NOT DAMAGE JEWELRY unlike metal sizers. Much better than folding plastic sheet mandrels that keep disintegrating!
- Manufactured in the USA
- Lifetime warranty
- Mandrels provide accurate measurements when measuring objects that are meant to be circular such as bracelets or necklaces. For these items, do not use straight rulers as they do not factor in the inner circumference of an object and will give longer, deceptively false measurements. Avoid upset customers and measure with a mandrel!
Compare two or more watches
When you are choosing between candidates, put them side by side on the same measurements:
| Measurement | How to check it | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | Across the case, perpendicular to the lugs, excluding the crown | Within the range for your circumference, or deliberately larger for style |
| Lug-to-lug | Tip of upper lug to tip of lower lug | Does not overhang the flat top width of your wrist |
| Thickness | Height of the case from caseback to crystal | Clears your shirt cuffs in everyday wear |
| Lug shape | Straight or curved, short or long | Matches how your wrist’s edges curve |
| Real-world fit | Paper preview, screen preview, or try-on | Looks balanced on your wrist |
Understand the limits of sizing charts
Sizing charts help you narrow the field, but they do not establish a universal ideal. The circumference bands above come from one retailer, and similar guides from other sellers use different bands. The source material for this guide found no clinical study or standards-based threshold for watch sizing. Fit follows your measurements and your preference, not gender categories. Avoid treating any single size as correct for everyone who has a given wrist circumference.
